It does seem a lot of money, but I guess he must have a decent reputation for Villareal to sign him for £5m from River Plate.
However, just because he’s playing in the B team doesn’t make him a bad player and he’s scoring goals.
Is it worth the gamble? I would say probably yes. He’s young and has potential. If he takes to the Prem he could be worth three times that in a couple of years. How much did we pay for a 30-year-old Jason Scotland?
Diame has come in from the Spanish second tier and adjusted pretty well, who is to say this guy couldn’t as well?
Okay it might not have been inevitable, but come on how many times do you see the ref even games up like that for the home side with the crowd on his back? Thomas made it an easy decision for him, but what would have happened if it had been a less clear yellow card? I’m guessing same result.
All I’m saying is that I don’t think Martinez should have taken the risk with Thomas, particularly after his first challenge.
Nice one BathLatic, forgot about the replay scenario! Will indeed keep my fingers crossed.
If it is a replay would that mean we play our fourth round tie midweek. What a cracking little tie that would be under the lights at the New Lawn!
Who could forget Bidstrup. He was one of Rioch’s wasn’t he?
Takes me back to the days of Jeffrey Peron!
He did have one or two half decent games for us and scored a couple of times. He wasn’t up to the Premiership physically.
That chance against Chelsea was a belter though wasn’t it?
Many thanks guys for the keen Google spotting!
I think you’re bang on. Liverpool’s capitulation was great news for us as I believe now is the perfect time to play them.
Things aren’t going for them and I’m just getting the impression that it’s going to get even worse for the scousers. The season we’ve had with the 9-1 thumping at Spurs, the win against Chelsea and the wonder goal at Sjoke, I can see us pulling a suprise out of the bag.
They have all the pressure, we have nothing to lose. The script is set for our own Amigo to get Ranting Rafa the sack! I can see the headlines now!
I think we should be aiming for the mid to high 40s to be sure of survival this year. I don’t think 40 will be enough as teams are beating each other with regularlity.
If we put a run together we will be alright, but we need to stop the rot on Saturday and capitalise on the turmoil that’s going on at Sjoke!
C’mon the Tics!
It’s the games against the teams around us that will determine whether we stay up or not. Under Bruce and Jewell we had passion and a will to win which got us points against the bottom sides and scrappy 1-0 wins. Okay we didn’t pull up any trees against the big boys bit we came close on a few occasions.
We’ve lost that physical in-your-face style and that is purely and simply down to the new tactics that Bobby wants to impose on the team.
The reason why our back four is under so much pressure is because they are being asked to play balls out from the back, which they haven’t been asked to do for the last four seasons, and are constantly on the back foot when we lose possession playing our pretty, pretty football.
Don’t get me wrong, I like pretty pretty football, but we’re not Barcelona and never will be, so trying to play that way with inferior players in the fastest league in the world is obviously going to be difficult.
We need to vary our tactics and show some fight and passion if we are going to compete against the likes of Stoke, Bolton and Blackburn in the next few weeks.
Hopefully the fallout from Saturday and Stoke’s Christmas party row could stir us into some action on Saturday.
To be fair to Koumas he’s never had an extended run in the side since he’s been here. There’s obviously some attitude issues there, but on his day he is a quality player.
I can also think of only one time when he was played in his best position (behind the striker) and that was against Chelsea at the start of last season – and then he went off injured.
Give him a chance and see what he can do. He’s not a winger because he hasn’t got the pace, but he’s certainly quicker than Gomez!
I think Ellington’s agent was a chap called Tony Finnegin if memory serves me right.
The reason football is in such a perilous state is purely down to the modern day players. Players’ wages are killing small premier league clubs like ours who don’t get the gates and the other revenue streams that the big boys do.
I read a post or a story somewhere about Marlon King’s wages – he was on a shed load a week and look what a waste of money he has turned out to be.
We hardly get gates of 20k, our merchandising revenue is probably a hell of a lot less than some championships clubs so how can we possibly compete with the big clubs. The only way is to sell off our prized assets and try and get some promising players in who will one day offset our negative balance sheet.
It means we won’t ever be able to challenge for Europe on a consistant basis but if it means the club I love stays afloat and then I’m all for it. BACK THE BOARD!!
I remember that play-off game well myself. The name is due to the fact that I live in Swine town and have done for the best part of 25 years, it just so happens that I support Latics because of parentage and relatives living in Orrell and Billinge!
