What’s with all the pessimism on here?

It’s amazing that people think we need two wins to stay up and even then it may not be enough, because that effectively means that we expect the other teams around us to win their games.

if we beat West Ham we give ourselves a great shout of staying up.

When did Wolves have such a great away record that they expect to go to Sunderland and win? They then entertain Blackburn on last day with both teams probably needing points. I can see Wolves taking two points out of their next two games. Did anyone see the Wolves game yesterday. The Baggies gifted them three shocking goals and in the second half showed what a poor side Wolves really are.

Blackpool play Bolton at home, who althogh they lost to Sunderland at home, had loads of chances and will be absolutely desperate to finish a good season on a positive note – Coyle will have them fired up. They then go to Old Trafford who will make a few changes but the reserves will be busting a gut to get in the Champions league side – I forsee a Berbatov hat-trick. Blackpool will take one more point maybe three if they fluke a win against Bolton.

So if we beat West Ham we may only end up needing a point at Stoke and we can do that.

By the way, I thought our support on Saturday was great. Did anyone notice Di Santo heading down the tunnel at the end and then realising he ought to give us a clap and then clapping from the relative safety of 40 yards away?

in reply to: How many do you think we’ll take to Villa? #64717

I’ve been reading with interest some of the Villa fans’ message boards and they really are on the back of their team. They were rubbish last week against West Brom and they certainly don’t like the management team.

If we score first we can take all three points because Villa Park is not a happy place at the moment.

Come on Griff where’s your optimism? We should be aiming for three points on Saturday nothing less and then we can all :happy-partydance:

Not surprising though as our wingers tend to cut inside all the bleeding time to have a shot with their stronger feet.

If we played two up front I’d be more concerned. Blo&dy hell we can’t get even get decent crosses into the box from corners – no offence Ginger Prince!

How on earth could he consider dropping Moses? He was the only player who looked like making things happen in the first half on Saturday.

He has pace and trickery and, although it didn’t happen on Saturday, is the type of player who could nick us a pen.

We could very well have the answers to our goalscoring problems, we just may not have tried out the right combination.

For example, Hugo is not clinical enough to play the lone striker’s role so why don’t we take him out of the firing line and try someone else in his place to see if that key can unlock the door.

To be fair to Martinez, although he is pretty rigid with his 4-5-1, he has tried to make our formation fluid with the three players behind the striker swapping positions throughout games. The only thing that hasn’t changed is Rodders playing as the preffered main striker. One small change to the team could make all the difference and at least we know that at least Sammon will bust his gut right until the last kick of the season.

I think you may be slightly optimistic about how many points we will pick up.

For me the one game we absolutely have to take three points from is the Blackpool game. If we beat Blackpool it should shunt us into that pack above us and give us the confidence to survive.

But just imagine if the Gods smile on us and, heaven forbid, we sneak a win at the Bridge. What would that do for our confidence for the rest of the season :happy-partydance:

With my sensible head on, I can realistically see us getting a win at Blackpool, a win against Everton and draws against Sunderland and West Ham (which will be a very tense game). I can’t really see us beating Villa despite our good record there, which means our season could very well go down to the wire at Stoke.

I’m already thinking about travel arrangements to the Britannia

I’m with you Tini – Tyldesley might well be right, but it won’t be good enough and so I’ll be giving the rosary beads some hammer tonight.

I will take a victory in whatever shape it comes along but I think it’ll be a dull as dishwater 0-0 game

Listening to Mcleish on SkySports last night he is playing it down in terms of it not being a season decider for them & he’s told players with injuries not to put themselves forward to play if they aint fully fit coz he will need em for the next 9 games not just this one.
So with that in mind I think he’ll get his side to park the proverbial bus across goal & despite the improved performances of late the team still isn’t scoring & I don’t think they have it in em to break that style down.
Hammer them beads & hope I’m wrong Griff[/quote]

Think you are right about McLeish’s intentions. They will play a very defensive 4-5-1 tomorrow. I think we will need a major slice of luck tomorrow, either that or we need start the match on fire and take them by surprise.

    Everything crossed……..

And for all the doom and gloom merchants who are content for us to go down and seem to have accepted it is a fait accompli, let me remind them that we are only TWO points away from safety and that at exactly the same point in the season four years ago West Spam were 10 points off safety and still managed to confortably avoid the drop.

So let’s not write off our chances just yet :violin: because in this season of shocks there is absolutely no reason why we cannot turn what has so far been a disappointing season into one where we finish with a bit of a flourish

What’s all this “I’m not bothered if we get relegated, it was going to happen sooner or later”.

Well I’m sorry but I would be bothered if we got relegated. I don’t want to see the team I support go down. Despite what another thread has said we are at the pinnacle of the English game, playing against some of the best players in the world on a weekly basis.

Why would anyone not be bothered about dropping down a division and seeing us play against mediocre opposition at, let’s be honest, some shyte grounds.

I want my team to be successful, punching above their weight and confounding the critics.

I had a conversation with a Rangers fan last summer where he asked me how I could support Wigan when we invariably hover in the bottom half and get a good thumping off the big boys.

I explained that our existance in the top flight is still a dream to me. I never thought 15 years ago we would be in the Premier League let alone that we would stay there for six seasons. And yes while we may take a few drubbings, I look forward to us every year maybe sticking two fingers up at the big boys and pulling off a shock win, which we did THREE times last year.

We still have one big scalp to claim, but I believe one day we will do it and maybe, just maybe the ref will smile on Little Wigan.

I think a lot of our fans need to take a reality check. Most clubs’ fans are jealous of us, yes jealous of us because we are a small club who are playing cup finals every week while they travel to Torquay or Hartlepool on a cold Tuesday night. We get the p&ss taken out of us by other fans for our poor support, but who cares we are Wigan and proud.

I for one want us to have a few more cup finals against the big boys next season so anyone who is not up for the fight and give their support to the lads can F*ck off and support a small team who dream of one day doing a Wigan.

in reply to: Wigan’s Pinnacle #61247

I think our pinnacle could well be a 10th place finish in the Premier League and a Carling Cup final appearance

Indeed, thought it would be good for those who knock Whelan to see for themselves how much the club is indebted to him :obscene-drinkingcheers:

We don’t need four wins. Three wins and three draws may well do it.

And if we do manage it we can all go like this :character-beavisbutthead:

in reply to: Roberto Martinez: ‘The Fall Guy’. #60779

It would be a shame if we went down.

Saturday just epitomised what this league will always be about and that is the big teams who always get the big decisions. It has always been this way and that is not going to change.

The only bright point to the weekend was Brum beating Arsenal as for once the little guy had his day.

While I will support the team through thick and thin and would have a lot more games more local to me here if we did go down, I do worry about what kind of squad we are likely to be left with should we go down – and I still think we can stay up

Charlie, Hugo, Alcaraz and Al Habsi would definitely not be with us – oh and Cleverley. We wouldn’t be able to afford Boselli but he might score a few in the Championship

And then of the young players, I would think McCarthy and Moses would have clauses in their contracts where we’ll have to let them go if we get relegated. Di Santo (judging by the way he sulks) will probably have a similar clause.

We’ll want to get Figgy off the wage bill and Gohouri doesn’t want to be here.
Lopez will have long gone, although we won’t know if he’s any good or not.

So who does that leave us with?

Pollitt, The Proclaimers, Figgy (although we’ll want to get him off the wage bill), Watson (cracking Championship player), Gomez (good Championship player), McArthur (he’ll be pining for little James), Stam (he might be too little even for the Championship!), Diame (he’ll want to go back to Madrid), McMananman (would do well in the league below), Thomas, Boyce and Sammon.

    Frightening :violin:

in reply to: James McCarthy #58875

I see Trappatoni was questioning young James’s loyalty the other day because he withdrew from the squad. What a :teasing-knob:

He is going to be one of their best players in years to come and faced years of barracking by Scots for turning his back on the jocks to pledge his future to ROI.

Does that old grandad not realise he’s just had three months out with a serious ankle injury.

    :teasing-knob: :teasing-knob: :teasing-knob: :teasing-knob:

Love these new smilies, especially this one! :character-beavisbutthead:
