Agree. It’s great to be involved in such a crucial match with no pressure on us.

As you say Scholes, we can play without any fear and win, lose or draw I intend to enjoy the occasion. Fingers crossed we keep it goalless for as long as possible because that is when the real tension will creep in for them.

We let an early one in, I fear we may be done for………..

I hope Chelsea need a win against us as I think the atmosphere at the Bridge will be as tense as hell. I can see us ending the season as we started it and recording an improbable win, but I’d take a draw!

In any event, it promises to be exciting and with no pressure on us we can all enjoy the day in warm sunshine after a few beers with any luck! 8-)

Here, here! Give the young lads a chance and let’s go for that final win to keep us up.

We need young, hungry players who want to get on and improve, not puffed up prima donnas who think they are better than they are.

    in reply to: Scharner #29776

When Scharner originally joined us he was a defensive anchorman in midfield who could play at centre half too. Jewell signed him after seeing him do a good job as the defensive midfielder for Austria against England.

He has scored some important goals for us over the last few seasons, who can forget the goal against Arsenal in the first leg of the League Cup semi or the goal at Brammall Lane?

But he has NEVER had enough quality to warrant a place as an attacking midfielder. Watching him play on Wednesday I lost count of the number of poor passes he made and as for his shooting – it is frankly embarrassing. The guy looks so clumsy when he runs, you half expect him to fall over all the time.

Loads of sides play similar formations to us, but they have genuine goal threats and creative players just behind the striker.
    Liverpool play Gerrard behind Torres.
    Chelsea have guys like Deco
    Everton have Cahill
Blackburn have played David Dunn there

These players hurt the opposition and not only chip in with a few goals, they create chances for their strikers and fellow midfielders.
We might not have players of the above quality, but we have some promising young players who would contribute far more than Scharner who thinks HE is in a position to lecture one of our brightest talents! Do me a favour!

    Great post Alex, spot on.

I think there has been a big over reaction by many people and I couldn’t believe the booing last night. As if things aren’t tense enough at the moment, some of our fans increase the low morale by booing the team off.

Last night was always going to be a tense affair regardless of what team Portsmouth put out and I wouldn’t say I agree with the team the manager put out, but the fact of the matter is that we didn’t lose and we picked up what could be a valuable point and edged a little bit further away from the drop zone. We have our destiny in our own hands and, as you quite rightly pointed out, another two or three points will probably do it.

Let us not forget the situation we found ourselves in just prior to Mr Jewell’s departure. We are five points clear with a slightly better goal difference than Hull and Burnley and we play Hull at home and are more than capable of getting at least a draw at West Spam with all the pressure their fans will put on them.

So let’s get behind the team and give them the best chance of staying up with our vocal support, not booing them!

PS – hope Scharner’s pathetic performance last night will see him dropped to the bench. Moses in from start please Bobby.

Wednesday night is all about us, not Portsmouth.

If we start well and really take it to them I can see yesterday’s performance and occasion taking its toll on Pompey.

If we start nervously and find that we can’t get the first goal we’re in trouble. However, you would hope that the effort their lads put in yesterday would take its toll the longer the game goes on.

Totally agree. Melchiot looks like he’s running in slow motion at the moment.

Next Wednesday is our biggest game of the season by a mile. Win and we more or less guarantee our survival. Lose……….well that just doesn’t bear thinking about!

I wish we were playing this weekend as the tension of having to wait until Wednesday is unbearable. We need to get an early goal against Pompey to settle our nerves and really go for it from the outset as otherwise it will turn into a really nervous affair.

I don’t think we need to look any further than the Portsmouth game for now.

in reply to: fulham game #27086

It is a bit annoying. I booked my train ticket last week, but that will teach me for not remembering Fulham were still in the Europa League.

I’m sure there was something on the official website that the game would be Easter Sunday if Fulham went through.

I would imagine with them still in the FA Cup and Europe the chances of there being enough spare midweek dates makes Sunday the most realistic time for them.

Our results and performances are getting worse?

Okay the amount of points we’ve picked up has slowed somewhat but I would suggest we look a lot more solid than we did a few months ago.

For goodness sake Spurs whalloped us 9-1 in November. I think you would have to agree that our defence does not look as porous as it did prior to Christmas.

The problem we have at the moment is scoring goals, but I’m sure that will come. Although disappointed with the Birmingham display, there were signs in that second half that all is not lost.

As I’ve said before, it’s not so much the system that is the problem for me, it’s a couple of the players in it.

Drop Scharner (from what I’ve read today it looks like he’s leaving anyway) and bring in Boyce for Mario. Put Moses behind Hugo and we start to look a lot more of a threat going forward.

We’re at the stage now where we really have to start going for teams starting with Liverpool on Monday ;)

in reply to: Anti Martinez brigade #24916

You’re not denying you are a chubster then?

in reply to: Anti Martinez brigade #24910

That’s true, it’s a message board which keeps getting hijacked by chubster fans. Go back to your own board.

We only want proper Latics fans on here, who don’t call for the manager’s head and will give their 100% backing to the team

in reply to: Where Do The Martinez Supporters Drink? #24902

Do you fancy Martinez? Your incessant posting about him is bordering on obsession.

Or are you a chubster masquerading as a Latics fan?

in reply to: Moses in the hole #24850

Oh and by the way, the sooner he drops the Mario the better. It was like watching him run on sand on Saturday. He makes Gomez look quick at times but is far more clumsy.

    Get Boyce in!

in reply to: And They Say Our Support Is Bad ! #24849

Completely agree with your assessment of St Andrews crowd. Worse than Old Trafford and that’s saying something!

You didn’t speak to me at the game by the way. Just for the record, I’m 100% behind our manager.

in reply to: Time for a campaign #23830

Absolutely agree with your post. I think the club is trying to generate some noise from supporters, the flags were a nice idea.

But how about getting a rabble rouser with a mic on the pitch before the games and at half time to get the fans fired up, try to get a few songs off the ground?

We do have great supporters and we can be as noisy as the best of them, but now is the time for everyone to get behind the lads.
