Awfully good?
Will Moyes prove more successful than Sir Alex at United? I very much doubt it. United fans will just have to accept Moyes as a reasonable successor.
Will Martinez prove as successful as Moyes at Everton? Again, I doubt it. Liverpool are emerging from a spell of poor management and underperformance. I expect Liverpool – with a budget twice that of Everton’s – to challenge and overtake Everton. But that won’t be Martinez’ fault.
I will argue till the day I die that there was no excessive force in that tackle as if any less “force” and he wouldn’t have got to the ball in time but it will always boil down to a matter of opinion. There are circumstances when a player is not entitled to make a tackle. Sometimes he will just have to stand off and wait for a better opportunity.
If a player does make a forceful tackle, then he takes the risk of incurring the referee’s wrath. If McManaman needed to use a degree of force to win the ball, perhaps it would have been better if he had resisted making the tackle at all.
It’s not as though the tackle was necessary. It appears that it was provoked by a knock that McManaman got just before – he seems to have a very quick temper. After last season, he should have known better.
I don’t think Beausejour is fluent in English – though perhaps he should have a good understanding by now.
I don’t know about Gomez.
Under Martinez, there were a dozen Spanish speakers at Wigan, so there may not have been a great incentive to learn English. Martinez is certainly very articulate in English.
Law 12 A direct free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any
of the following seven offences in a manner considered by the referee to be
careless, reckless or using excessive force:
• kicks or attempts to kick an opponent
• trips or attempts to trip an opponent
• jumps at an opponent
• charges an opponent
• strikes or attempts to strike an opponent
• pushes an opponent
• tackles an opponentIf a player, in the eyes of the referee, is careless, reckless or uses excessive force in a tackle, then he commits a foul. It doesn’t matter whether he gets the ball or not. When the referee gives a foul for a tackle, players are acting under a misapprehension when they indicate that they got the ball.
This file gives some further explanation of the rule; http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/afdeveloping/refereeing/law_12_fouls_misconduct_en_47379.pdf
Careless – lack of attention or consideration or without precaution – free kick only
Reckless – with disregard for the danger to, or consequences for, his opponent – free kick plus caution
Using excessive force – far exceeded the use of necessary force and is in danger of injuring his opponent – free kick plus sending offYou may or may not like the rule. You may or may not share the referee’s opinion. Fans are usually partisan; they generally think that decisions against their side are harsh, while decisions against their opponents are lenient. But it seems that an appeal will only succeed if the referee has made a glaring error, and that doesn’t appear to be the case here.

Boyce Barnett Perch (Rogne if fit) Crainey (Perch if Rogne fit)
McArthur McCann
Maloney Beausejour
Holt FortuneI’d like to play with two forwards, but I’m worried about our leaky defence facing Forest.
So I think I’d start with an extra man in midfield. We know McCarthy can play better – I hope McCann can too.

We went through all this last season! Didn’t you or McManaman learn anything then?
Did the referee make a glaring error last season? Yes. McManaman was lucky – the FA were unable to review the decision. They have now changed the rules.
Did the referee at Bournemouth make a glaring error? No. Both you and Coyle insist that McManaman won the ball – but don’t understand that it’s irrelevant.
Most managers talk nonsense after the game – especially if it is one they have lost. I don’t think Martinez was an exception.
They have to defend their selection and their players. Perhaps it’s unreasonable to expect them to give a calm account just after the game has finished.
The usual scapegoat is the referee. Coyle has already wrongly criticised the referee who dismissed McManaman, promising to appeal against the decision. Fortunately, wiser counsel prevailed.
Coyle sayings;
There’s no doubt we could and should have won the game.
In your golf bag, you have a set of irons and you need to know how to use them all.
Martinez used the match as an opportunity to try out three at the back, playing Heitinger, Jagielka and Stones.
Jagielka, Barkley and Osman were the only regular first eleven players who started.
Kone and Robles playing tonight.
Seven first team players on the bench.
It’s confusing! The UEFA draw on 9 August began at 10.45 here.
Locations on CET are now on CEST (Central European Summer Time).
I think BST is 1 hour behind CEST which should be 1 hour ahead of CET.
In that case, 12.45 CET should be 12.45 BST.
Who is going to represent Wigan at the draw? What do they think?
We’ve got all these left-sided players!
I’d settle for one one of Beausejour, Espinoza and McClean.
I think McCarthy will be more reliable in the centre – even in his current form – to smother the threat of Forest.
We may well need substitutes again. Who’s going to take the free kicks?
Champions League Play Off Round this week – including Arsenal v Fenerbahce tonight and Celtic v Shakhter – it means Colliery – Karagandy tomorrow.. Losers go into draw for Europa League.
Then on Thursday, Play Off Round for Europa League, including Spurs v Tbilisi.
The group stage draw will take place in Monaco on Friday 30 August from 12.45 CET – that should be 10.45 BST.
Martinez had ideal wing backs in Boyce and Beausejour that let him play three at the back. Unfortunately, we haven’t got three fit players who can play at the back. Besides, I think Coyle will stick to a conventional back four.
We’ve got a dozen midfield players who offer endless variety. What formation would you suggest to face Forest?
Right side of midfield remains a problem. McManaman seems our only natural player there. I’d like to pair up McArthur with McCarthy, and Maloney with Beausejour. Perhaps we could go back to one up front with;
McArthur
Gomez, McCarthy, Beausejour,
Maloney
Holt/Fortune -
