No, it’s two wingers, Ralph Coates and Willie Morgan.

These are the kind of names that I’d expect – some of the better Championship players perhaps, but nothing to get too excited about.

Coyle built a reasonable squad at Burnley and took it to promotion. He strengthened it for the Premier League, notably with Steven Fletcher and Tyrone Mears.

At Bolton the squad declined noticeably in his time there. This may have been due to pooor choices or, more likely, lack of funds. Players like Elmander and Cahill left, while Holden, Lee and Mears had long-term injuries.

Bolton were relegated; does this sound familiar? Transfers for the Championship season were again uninspired, and Coyle was sacked.

Fletcher moved to Wolves where he played with Kevin Doyle. Wolves went down. Fletcher moved to Sunderland, and narrowly escaped relegation again. Kevin Doyle stayed at Wolves and did go down again. He is far too good to play in League One.

    Bad luck!

I don’t suppose I could stay with you in 2022?

I think I may be going down to New Springfield a lot more this season. There is certainly much more to look forward to this coming season. Like wins for one thing and hopefully something more than a relegation struggle.

And we won’t have to endure those overpaid dilettantes representing Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur…

Show us how we ought to play, Owen. It’s all yours!

Despite the players we have lost and the ones we still may lose we still have twice as much quality in the rest than any of the teams you mention.

    Thank goodness for that.

Owen and I will both sleep soundly tonight.

Martinez’ tactical changes have been subtle and fascinating, both from game to game and during the progress of individual games.

Most fans have recognised his formations with three or four at the back. But I think many changes have gone over their heads. I wish we had had a commentary from him explaining just what he was doing and why. I’d love to attend one of his coaching sessions.

So far, I don’t think Coyle has shown anything like the same innovation and imagination. And I have been to quite a number of games at Burnley and Bolton.

Wigan and Bolton used to be paired so that when one was at home, the other was away. Next season there are days when Blackpool, Blackburn, Bolton and Wigan are all at home.

Thursday 28 November Europa League Round 5
Sunday 1 December Wigan v Derby
Tuesday 3 December Leeds v Wigan

That looks a bit tight! They must be aware of the Europa League dates.

Maybe we are a Championship club because we were certainly punching well above our weight in the Prem, particularly the last few seasons!

Then why all the criticism of Martinez, Phil?

I think it’s going to be a long, hard season too.

I don’t know what attitude Coyle will adopt towards the Europa League. Bigger teams than Wigan have found the away trips exhausting – it takes experience – and resources – to adapt to them. So I can easily see Coyle sending weakened teams abroad.

We’ve been used to the problems of losing our better players and integrating new players each season. It’s contributed to the slow starts Wigan have made. This season will be the same – but the changes may be even greater than usual.

The Championship kicks off two weeks before the Premier League, so Coyle hasn’t got much time before we start all over again. I am looking forward to it. And, hopefully, we will be able to compete better both home and away.

    One word – Wolverhampton Wanderers

    I’ll bite.

    That’s two words!

[At least Owen Coyle has the balls to have a go and try to get us back up into the PL, unlike Mr Martinez who upped sticks and abandoned us after messing up big style.

Can’t you welcome Coyle without making false comparisons with Martinez?

If I remember rightly, Coyle took Burnley into the Premier League, but abandoned them when the battle for survival started to look a little tricky.

I’m not sure that it’s just a question of balls that persuaded Coyle to try to get us back into the PL. A handsome salary from DW plus a £1 million bonus for promotion may have had some influence on the out-of-work manager.

I’m hoping that Coyle can continue the long-term plans that Martinez began.

As Coyle put it: Coyle 7 Martinez 1. Nuff said.

Coyle was a little naughty in his first interview! In Premier League games, Coyle and Martinez actually come out even.

Played 7, Coyle won 2, drawn 3, Martinez won 2

There were two more FA Cup games; the first was drawn, Coyle won the replay.

And Coyle struggled just as much as Martinez in the Premier League.

    Coyle 2011/12 18 Bolton Wanderers (R) 38 10 6 22 46 77 −31 36
    Martinez 2012/13 18 Wigan Athletic (R) 38 9 9 20 47 73 –26 36

It’s Coyle, let’s get over it. There’s no need to bring Martinez into it, but if you must, then get your facts right!

I certainly hope to see more home wins this season, but that is because we – like Bolton – are now in the Championship, not because we have a new manager.

I expect we’ll get a local derby over Christmas and the new year – it could be Bolton.

    Sunday 29 December Burnley (H)

So Coyle was only talking about the Bolton and Wigan games. It’s odd that he overlooked Burnley’s first home defeat in their Premier League season.

Sun Aug 11 Manchester Utd (Community Shield) Wembley
Tue Sep 17 Sheffield Wednesday (postponed) A
Tue Oct 1 Queens Park Rangers (postponed) H

We’ll be three games behind everybody else at this stage!

As we have seen, it’s difficult to be behind others but have games in hand.

And we don’t want to be playing postponed matches at the end of the season again.
