There are 16 ties in the Third Round. The 32 clubs in the draw include 7 English clubs playing in European competitions plus 25 clubs who progress from the second round.

Working backwards, last season there were 50 clubs in the draw for the Second Round, including 13 PL clubs + 2 highest ranked clubs (Blackburn and Bolton) + 35 winners from the First Round.

    There were 70 clubs in the First Round; 24 L2 + 24 L1 + 22 CH clubs.

This season, the 50 clubs in the draw for the Second Round will be 14 PL teams + 1 highest ranked team (Reading) + 35 winners from the First Round.

Once again there are 70 clubs in the First Round.

There isn’t room in a modern team for a specialist player – like a conventional fullback, a pure winger or a goal poacher.

All the players now have to contribute a lot more whether the team is in possession of the ball or not. It’s not sufficient to wait for the ball in the penalty area. Just look at the effort that Kone makes.

Boselli can certainly shoot, but he isn’t a mobile player at all. His failure to make the first team has been an enormous disappointment to everyone at Wigan.

“would like to see him have a decent run in the team as i can’t see him being any worse than Di Santo?”

All Boselli’s appearances for Argentina were made before he came to Wigan. Di Santo was selected on the strength of his play for Wigan, and made his first international appearances last season. He’s gone now, but I’m sure he would have made an impression in the Championship.

Alejandro Sabella, the Argentina national team manager, prefers Di Santo.

    I’m very naive.

I still regard football as a sport.

    Boselli looking for a move?

Any move is bound to be made slowly.

Well done, Phil! So the next round is on you.

Personally I always said that Wigan didn’t have the resources to succeed in two competitions. And Wigan not only had a small squad, they also had a lot of injuries last season.

If Premier League survival was the top priority, then Roberto was right to field weakened teams in the cup competitions. Bournemouth, Macclesfield, Huddersfield and Everton all let him down. He played to win the two games at Wembley. The semi-final was straightforward, the final was fantastic.

As was always likely, squeezing in midweek games before and just after the Cup Final proved beyond their resources. But Wigan remained in the hunt for so long because they were little different in standard from the other struggling teams. Unfortunately, they had more on their plate and fewer players available.

Would I accept relegation as the price of a Cup win? I think I would!

This season, it’s a little worrying that Wigan have got the complication of the Community Shield plus three home and three away games in the Europa League. Perhaps all the local Lancashire and Yorkshire games will be some compensation.

I trust that the excitement this season will come towards the top of the table, and that Wigan will be more like Bolton than Wolves! I certainly think that they will be a top half team, and with a little luck they could finish in the top six.

Dave strikes me as a boss that would demand more fire & passion from his key employees, so maybe that’s why he severed the umbilical cord.

Dave didn’t sack Roberto. Roberto left to go to a better job.

And you can have more than one son.

Looking back is a funny old game.

When did you realise that Wigan were going quite well in the Cup?

When did you realise that Wigan were going to win the Cup?

When did you realise that the deciding game of the season would be at Arsenal three days after the Cup Final?

Now, what about an insight into our fortunes next season!

in reply to: Coyle…cant be any worse than the last 4 seasons. #116480

“At least his interviews actually make sense unlike Martinez’s waffling.”

Coyle was trying to put a spin on the results. If you consider just the Premier League matches, they actually come out even. And that’s what he should have said, “We’ve come out pretty even in matches against each other.”

So it’s not so much; Coyle…can’t be any worse than the last 4 seasons. It’s more; Coyle…more of the same.

And Roberto wasn’t so much in favour of the back pass as against the big boot forward.

But Roberto’s gone. Can we please stop looking back now and start looking forward. Tomorrow’s fixture list should give us something new to think about. I expect we’ll get a local derby over Christmas and the new year – it could be Bolton.

Coyle……..Roberto is a very good manager, but i have come up against him 8 times as a manager and lost once,i am confident in my own abbillity

    Its a fair point.[/quote]

Oh dear, Owen, it rather casts doubt on your ability to count!

I make it played 9, won 3, drawn 4, lost 2 – not much difference between them after all.

    2009/10
    1. 24 October 2009 Burnley 1 Wigan 3
    2. 17 February 2010 Wigan 0 Bolton 0
    3. 13 March 2010 Bolton 4 Wigan 0
    2010/11
    4. 23 October 2010 Wigan 1 Bolton 1
    5. 5 January 2011 Bolton 1 Wigan 1
    6. FA Cup 29 January 2011 Bolton 0 Wigan 0
    7. Replay 16 February Wigan 0 Bolton 1
    2011/12
    8. 15 October 2011 Wigan 1 Bolton 3
    9. 11 February 2012 Bolton 1 Wigan 2

Played 9, won Coyle 3, drawn 4, won Martinez 2

Remember, Owen, there are eleven players in a team!

in reply to: Premiership Injuries 2012-13 #116414

Newcastle could afford to buy five new players in the winter transfer window – including Massadio Haïdara. That was enough to lift them out of trouble.

QPR, under Redknapp, signed six new players, but even they could not save QPR.

Wigan signed Espinoza and, on loan, Henriquez, Scharner and Robles. They loaned out Kiernan, Mustoe and Boselli and also Jones. Martinez faced an uphill task to keep Wigan in the Premier League.

Leaving the DW Stadium on the 8th May 2013; the day after we got rolled over by Swansea.

If the matter was confidential, then why on earth would they meet at the DW Stadium?

Had Fergie already decided to retire?

Was David Moyes lined up for Old Trafford?

Was Martinez agreed as the next Everton manager?

I’m not surprised that arrangements were put in hand. But I am surprised that there were no leaks.
