One thing i love about Roberto Martinez – is the fact he will not be drawn into any negative press regarding Wigan Athletic.
It may well be that we had bid accepted and that he has turned us down – that is allowed alex. However his comments that you have provided us with, are in a clever way his answer.
the deal wouldn’t get done by the deadline due to him being in Russia
The deal wont be done by deadline – possibly true.
Having thought this would be just another run of the mill thread on a past player – its actually turned out to be quite entertaining.
Keeping to the subject in hand however, Diame was always going to end up at one of the top clubs – and as mentioned previously, i think ‘the arsenal way’ is a good step for Diame. The player is a very talented young man. The only regret i have is that we werent able to cash in on him – maybe the initial outlay of a big contract of 40k may have been a good gamble on a transfer return of 7-10 million for him 12 months down the line. It was a gamble though and one i suppose DW wouldn’t entertain.
Diame has been outstanding for west ham so this idea of him beeing ousted by Big Sam is one that i just dont agree with at all. The player had the terms of a release transfer fee added to his contract which wisely allows him to move for a minimal fee. nothing wrong there!!!
I think a fullback with age on his side is a good idea; as that position and goalkeeper are the only places on the pitch we struggle to have adequate competition for. Seeing as at the the moment im a massive Boyce fan and im warming to Stams performances. I’ll nominate a new keeper in the transfer window.
Not that Ali needs replacing but i feel that having Pollitt in there as his wing-man isnt really putting pressure on Ali to retain his place.
Most premierleague clubs have a decent second keeper who is chomping at the bit to have a go. Pollitt as loyal and committed that he is – is never really going to challenge for the shirt.
I wasn’t referring to their history more their current status in English football. They haven’t won the league in over 50yrs or the FA cup in over 20yrs so not exactly dominant.
How are you defining big club? By measuring them against us?
I’d have to say that, yes spurs are a big club. With regards to their current status in English football. Champions league football last season isn’t too bad of an achievement.
thats a fair comment, but when you look at diame, Ramis how Di Santo has come on as a player. McCarthy and McArthur who were bought at budget price. I think there are more positives than negatives.
when i mentioned the finance issue – i was really referring to the fact Bruce et al had at their disposal weekly wages of upto £40k to entice players. Martinez is playing about with £10k week. that is a big obstacle to over come. I think he is doing a grand job.
Firstly, may I say this post is NOT a knee jerk reaction after last night. But reading a few posts on here today, I thought I’d start a debate as to how we think we are progressing under Martinez.
People keep saying we are making progress, but yet I was staggered at how poor our fringe players performed last night, suggesting our squad is weak and if we have any injuries or suspensions, we don’t have any reliable quality to call upon.
People say we have progressed…..but how? I don’t see it. I looked at a programme from 07/08 today, when Bruce was in charge, and we were no better off points wise at this same stage as the season. So points wise, no better off, squad wise we are certainly no better off. We don’t have a reserve team, we have this ‘development squad’ nonsense……
…come on, explain how we are better off? Because we are what, 3, or is it 4, I forget, seasons into Martinez’s reign, and how are we better off? I don’t see as we are, in all honesty.
Now lads (and lasses), no falling out. Let’s just debate it, thanks.
OK ABL; i’ll have a go at this.
If you are going to compare our squad and achievements today to when Bruce was in charge. You have to also consider the restraints that Roberto is working under at moment. Bruce however had free reign in comparison. Hence Bruce leaving us when he was asked to cut the wage bill and reduce scouting network. Roberto has maintained premierleague status and also achieved wins against Liverpool,Chelsea,Arsenal and more importantly Manchester United whilst working wwith the aforementioned restraints. Roberto has systematically removed or rid contracts of extortionate salaries.
It doesnt take a genius to see that i am of course pro-Martinez.
I feel if we had martinez when Mr Whelan was spending on transfers and allowing large contractual salaries for players – we would be better off. however that is not the case yet we are still able to maintain premierleague status. not too bad of an achievement in my eyes.
you say people have said we are making progress? im not sure who you are referring to. However i possibly see progress differently to yourself.
I also feel we didnt play particulary poor last night. we dominated a team that offered nothing apart from a defensive wall of 10 players in their own third. When chelsea did that in the champions league they beat barca. I dont think things are as bad as some fans make out.
we also have some decent young players coming through. something that we can not say has happened before (Baines exception of course)
I thought Watson and Ramis actually looked ok. considering the attacking play against them was somewhat limited with Bradfords two lines of 4 in their own third. They coped well with what was asked of them.
We played ok – there are lots of criticism of our play, but actually we dominated from start to finish. we just couldnt hit their barn door.
reminded me of chelsea beating barca in champions league
with regards to players who i think were identified as not having enough to stand up against a weak bradford set up – for me; Dave Jones never gave us enough in the middle. I d look at moving him on along with Lopez. on a number of ocassions last night Gomez received the ball to a chorus of boo’s and get off. but – i’ll stand up for him on this one. He had no wigan player moving into space , offering support or even interested in taking the ball off him. So in this instance i’ll leave Gomez alone. he was no poorer than the rest.
just one of those days.
When we spank spurs on sturday – we’ll forget all about this and look forward to challenging for europe
A decent arguement you put forward there tyldesley.
I also would go as far as saying a few of our big signings were actually not from Jewells choice but were already being scouted by Benson.
I liked Jewell and i think he had more positive attributes we could look at than the negative ones. However it is very difficult to disagree with your points on his mnagement style.
