I think the Modern Royal Family have strengthened the Nations love and respect for the Monarchy and they have become more accessible and grounded. It seems that a lot of the pomp and ceremony has been replaced by more beneficial duties carried out by the Royals the World over.

The Monarchy has modernised and evolved over the years, whilst retaining sufficient mystique to keep it unique and “British”.

No one is above criticism and the Queen is very aware of that.

Let’s face it, if Jesus Christ turned up tomorrow in Wigan for the unveiling, someone would have a go at him for encouraging wine drinking

Who’s going on Thursday? I should be able to so long as I don’t get a last minute call out!

Whilst it’s DW’s 80th, it would have been better done on a matchday; far more would have attended.

Does anyone know if they’re opening any of the car parks or will we have to take pot luck on the retail park?

A conservative estimate recently valued Buckingham Palace at £5 billion.

The Queen’s personal wealth has been debated many times (perhaps not on here mind  ).
Whilst Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse are state property (and as Horc rightly says, the state’s responsibility via the Crown Estate), Sandringham House and Balmoral Castle are the Queen’s private property.

Whilst those 2 properties can be valued on paper, it is impossible to calculate what some Arab or Russian Oligarch would pay to for them.

I’ll turn into a Republican if someone can show me anyone who could have done the job as well as Her Majesty has done, for that length of time, for that value for money. For me Britain without a monarchy is unthinkable.

“There’s only one F in Filan” was another good one from a few years back

Well it’s a bit of observational humour and nothing at all hurtful or wrong with it.
Lighten up lads players and managers have always had a variety of daft nicknames.
Yootha himself referred to Powell as Powelly. How daft is that when everyone else calls him Cosy,Baden, Enoch and a lot worse.

Conor Salmons nickname of ‘Tinna’ is one of my all time West Stand favourites.
At least they seem to have stopped calling Perkins “Dorothy”

in reply to: Abuse to Powell #152540
Powell didn’t pick himself. Will didn’t drop himself either.
What a complete balls has been made of this season after getting back to this level.
The momentum alone of a successful squad would have pushed us further up the league than this.
That’s without getting rid of any or bringing in any new players at all.
It’s been a cock up since before a ball was even kicked at Chester.
Yesterday going to Barnsley with no strikers and being content with a point from kick off won’t do and just adds to the balls up of a season.
Why on earth should we have been so worried about an average side (minus their best and key midfielder) like Barnsley is mind boggling.
Fans calling for two strikers and we play without any.
Nil nil again at Huddersfield is a good bet.
Fans will be hurling more abuse aimed at Sharpey next.

0-0 at Huddersfield would be a good result IMHO.
I would take a draw away from home quite happily at the moment…BUT…

Simply have to be more attacking at home…2 up front for at least 1/3rd of the game (preferably when the game isnt already lost).

in reply to: Standing at games #152476
Premier League clubs have agreed to more talks regards this.

What a load of b*llocks this is though:

More from Sue Roberts from the Hillsborough Foundation after Premier League clubs discussed safe standing for the first time today.

All-seater stadiums have been compulsory in the top two divisions in England since an inquiry into the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, which claimed the lives of 96 Liverpool fans.

“If people were going into a seated area [Hillsbrough] could never have happened,” Roberts said.

“Why break what isn’t broke? There’s been no accidents since [Hillsbrough].”

“We’re only thinking of the safety of others. It’s too late for us – we’ve already lost our loved ones through standing on terraces.

“We have a tendency to forget things in history. I think it’s one step in the wrong direction that will eventually lead to another step and then another step. I would hate to be still around to say I told you so.

“But if we let standards lapse, at some point in the future somebody will be saying why didn’t we listen?”

Too many people in a crowded seating area causes far more issues as there are less places to move too.

Last game of the 2008 season when ManUre won the title at ours. Hundreds of them piled in to the West Stand after close of play when the gates were open. Stewards had all bu***d off leaving us to sort ourselves out.

Some spotty ManUre youth thought it was clever to stand right in front of me when I was standing up for the presentation. He soon scarpered when I pointed out the Ambulance in the corner was waiting for him if he didnt shift prompto.

Is it just me, by the way, who thinks that giving him a nickname that is based on a rather poor 1970s comedienne isn’t exactly giving us the aura of being a set of progressive and forward-looking fans?

Yes, let’s hope the team selection and tactics don’t resemble something George Roper worked out on the back of a beer mat

Seriously though, good to have got the appointment sorted; seems a long time since GC was shown the door.

Onwards and upwards. Sadly can’t be in the audience on Saturday due to a long standing commitment before the fixtures came out…but will be there in spirit B)

in reply to: Barrow #151988
I remember Barrow getting kicked out of the football league in 1972.

Won 4-0 yesterday, 5th in the Conference (or whatever it’s called this season  ) and Holker Street is a happy place at the moment.

Yes just seen the highlights on Sky Centre App.

A win is a win. Our position could be much healthier after we beat Reading. ;)

in reply to: Rugby world cup 2021 #151957

Nothing against the sport personally (went to the 2013 WC Final) but the core problem with the RL World Cup is there are 3 proper teams and the rest really do make up the numbers.

Paul Jewell ?
Big Sam ?
Roberto ( Di Mateo )?
Ryan Giggs ?
HORC ?
Donny’s Page ?

Steve Kean
Shaun Wane :woohoo:

in reply to: Caldwell sacked #151749

Just seen the news on Facebook.

As I said before, IMHO he deserved longer; at least until after the Derby game for me.

Haven’t thought yet who I’d like as his replacement. What I would say to those who were calling for his head, be careful what you wish for. Never forget, when we wanted the Tinkerman out we got McKay

Nothing on the website about replacement so presumably Barrow takes charge on Saturday  We then win the next 2 games and well….

in reply to: Boring Possession Football #151703

1) To be fair lowey, possession style of football is way better than the kick long & hope for the best style of football. Possession football when played right can be very good to watch & the end product can be brilliant.

2) Yesterday, however few chances we created, (& sometimes maybe give credit to the opposition for that) we are simply not taking those chances. Whichever style, formation or tactics a team sets out to play, football is about scoring one more goal than the opposition – which as i say we are not doing. Whether that is down to woeful shooting, an excellent save by the keeper, a shot just wide or hits the woodwork, the chances we are making are currently not being executed.

3) IMO we dominated that game up until they scored. That one goal simply knocked the stuffing out of us. I could see that & i am sure so could others.

4) Nick powell has been a disgrace (again IMO) since he returned to our club & i saw it as a blessing when he went off. Young byrne was brilliant when he came on. But if i had to name just one player who summed up the jonny big bollox in all of my 38 years watching latics, he would be it.

5) Following their goal, caldwell should have quickly changed his mind & subbed either power or perkins & put lefondre on with grigg (who looked p155ed at being subbed). I agree, bringing davies on – & no disrespect to him, meant there was no place for a game changer ie, gomez. I agree, that, he did get wrong.

6) Should we sack him. One word answer NO! IMO things just are not going right for us at the moment. We are playing ok, but as i said earlier, we need to start scoring. He has sorted us out defensively, but we now need to master the art of scoring goals & i do believe we will be alright once we have mastered that. I for one prefer caldwell’s style of football to that of bobby’s. Some might argue that it is entirely the same. Yes it is to a degree, but caldwell’s style is played at a quicker tempo. Bobby’s style bored me to tears.

& now, i await the backlash from the usual suspects ;)

If I am considered a usual suspect then so be it but I have said give him 3 maybe 4 more games to turn things around, and if things don’t improve then get rid because we will just end up in the same situation as last time we plied our trade in this division!
Yes, Derby home game for me is the key moment.

For me he’s safe till then, but if we’re still in the bottom 3 after that game the knives will be out…

in reply to: CALDWELL OUT! #151653

For me Caldwell is not (or should not) be in danger yet.

This is an incredibly long season and we’re not quite 1/4 way through so a little early to be pulling the trigger IMHO.

That said, we do need to see real signs of progress pretty soon.

I reckon the key time will be the Derby home game on 3rd December. If we’re still in the bottom 3 after that game, then the manager’s position for me will be seriously in doubt.

The black clouds really formed over the ground today; was that an omen for Caldwell?
