Dave Whelan SHOULD be honoured. The commerce and money, employment etc he has brought into the country. If Eamon Holmes can get an OBE……
And Kenny Dalglish should be knighted, also.
Dave’s outburst was badly timed especially since he was also a well publicised donator to the Tory party.
If only he’d kept his mouth shut.
What a load of bollocks the honours system is, it’s beyond a joke when you look at some of the arseholes that have been knighted who have contributed nothing to the public service when you compare them to the NHS front line staff, Police, Fire Fighters and our armed forces.Of course it is. A cash for honours, let’s slap each other on the back, Jolly Boys Club. It now tries to mask the real purpose of the system by including “ordinary” people from various walks of life but that only acts to draw attention to its true objective.
Point I was trying to make Sammy is that your earlier post indicated that because of his comments and media backlash it will probably cost him an honour. It hasn’t affected a lot of people who have been honored who have been guilty of far worse misdemeanors. All of which were well documented and publicly known long before the knighthoods were dished out.I doubt anyone else being publicly denounced in the way Whelan was will be honoured afterwards.
I’m afraid his verbal misdemeanours outweigh his contributions to retail success or sporting achievement.
They all tried to brand sir dave as a racist.ffs.lets just look over the wall at the bigger picture. Fairplay to griff.bet he doesn’t miss coming on ere either.lol.
I don’t believe Dave Whelan is racist but he unwittingly made some racist remarks which received high-profile media coverage making it highly unlikely he will ever be honoured.
Get what your saying Sammy and I too doubt he will ever be honoured but I wouldn’t say racist remarks but totally inappropriate silly comments that he somehow made into racial issues.
It seems that most people at the Beeb knew of the vile antics of a certain Yorkshire man dating back to the sixties. They somehow Fixed it for him to still be be knighted.
TBH, Uncle Dave only really means so much to Wigan folk and we all know that our exploits under Sir David are well and truly forgotten by the rest of the sporting media who lets face it would have rather it never happened at all. The man can do no wrong in my eyes but I doubt that alone is enough to get the great man his just deserts.
Yes, silly comments, but can be considered offensive to ethnic groups.
It’s ludicrous to compare what Whelan said to anything linked with Savile so I don’t accept the analogy you’re trying to make there.
Whelan isn’t universally liked by Wigan folk either. Many despise the man for both valid and irrational reasons. I have never crossed the man’s path so I am indifferent to whatever reputation might precede him. However, I do thank him for taking the club to heights I could only have dreamed of prior to his involvement.
Whether that in itself is deserving of being honoured is a debatable issue. They all tried to brand sir dave as a racist.ffs.lets just look over the wall at the bigger picture. I think his contribution to race relations may have overshadowed everything else he’s achieved.
Stormed straight up tunnel when subbed last night.
He did not storm straight up the tunnel at all. When he left the pitch he applauded the crowd, acknowledged both Cook the player replacing him and walked up the tunnel. At the end of the game he came back onto the field to exchange pleasantries with the Charlton players with the rest of the team. Hardly the actions of someone with an attitude.
Hes lazy and a passenger in a lot of games. Id get shut….for the right price.
He can be frustrating and treads a fine line with officials and opposition but is the only player we have capable of producing something out of the ordinary. His fitness is questionable so it remains to be seen if another club is willing to take the risk and pay money for him. I’d be disappointed if he left.

And that joke keeper almost cost us in the last seconds with a schoolboy error of holding on far too long and conceding an indirect free kick in the area..
I can only assume he was completely unaware of the six second rule which for a professional football player and goalkeeper no less is unbelievable.
I would hazard a guess he thought he would just get a hurry up off the ref whilst picking up a yellow card. which is what happens in 99% of the cases
Yes, when it’s time wasting at a goal kick. I still think he didn’t know the rule.
Disagree about Roberts, thought he was one of only a few players who actually played ok. Others who did ok for me was Elder, Byrne and of course Grigg. The rest were diabolical bad.
It goes to show how we all see things differently.
George, you have referred to the young lad in goal as a clown on more than one occasion tonight. IMO he looked no worse than Jones has been, spilled a few shots, dropped the odd cross and of course held on to the ball for 6.9 seconds when the forward was moving with him trying to put him off. 99 times out of 100 the ref would have warned the forward to move away. Earlier he was jumping up and down in front of him for the free kick. Has ungentlemanly conduct been scratched out of the rule book.6.9 seconds? Really? It was more like double that.

Went to the ticket office today for mine in the West Stand and was told it’s unreserved seating.
Going off the body language in the director’s box I suspect Cook had a bit of explaining to do after the game.
Maybe thats why he’s trying to cover his tracks, it looks like changes are imminent!
Cook also expanded on his quotes in Monday’s Wigan Post, when he asked a section of the home support to eradicate the ‘negativity spreading round’ the ground.
“So much is negative at the moment, and I must admit I’m struggling with that,” the Latics boss explained.
Curious comment that. I accept the place isn’t bouncing but I don’t detect obvious negativity from the crowd during games. Maybe there’s an expectation the team should be pushing on from the already positive start but that hasn’t happened, certainly of late.
I think those at the game on Saturday have a right to be disappointed in the performance. Two weeks off and it showed, quite noticeably. Fair play to Bradford. We are the team to beat and they came here on the back of a bad home defeat the week before so were up for it. But we made it far easier for them by lacking in match fitness and awareness. Questions should be asked as to what benefit there was by resting the entire team, whatever that entailed, during the international break.
However, if he reads this site on a regular basis I can fully understand where the negativity he talks about comes from.

Problem I have is most of us went garrity after the article by Knobhead Keys and rightly so yet some are now happy we have definitely thrown a game. Double standards. And if filmoss is correct about the rules then the club will find itself in the quagmire and a probable financial penalty. As for players wanting a break that’s fine for those playing regularly but I imangine that the likes of Bruce would have been chomping at the bit to play.
I copied and pasted those rules from the Checkatrade Trophy official site. It said that the fine would be up to £5000.
It remains to be seen if the club will be fined but they must have known the rules so will be aware of that and yet still determined to play the kids.
