Where’s loudmouth? Surely he can supply sufficient hot-air to help us in our hour of need.

I’ve already got a fiver on him being the first to blame the lack of grit on the Spanish One
i was told by one of our suppliers just the other day there is a world shortage of the type of unrefined rock salt needed for gritting and we as a country have nearly exhausted our natural reserves of the stuff so we import the majority.

where from you might add ?

well some salt marsh area in spain !!!

    i kid ye not.

and standish despite my undoubted ability to produce hot air(like the majority on here)even i can’t produce enough to keep warm at the moment.
Good to see you back Loudmouth. I was beginning to think you’d taken a festive posting holiday.

If Martinez is anything to do with the Spanish rock salt, I’ll bet the collection of it is a joy to watch with left hand drive lorries on the wrong side of the road, and right handers on the other etc. etc.

…and what price on at least one member of the media mentioning ‘icy conditions’ and ‘slide towards the relegation zone’ in the same sentence?

sparky sacked at city, been saying to my lad he will be gone for new year

do you think if he turns up for our game on monday the spanish one or owd ginger should be worried.
Loudmouth….I’m not criticising here, but have you been watching Wigan for a while? The reason I ask is that you constantly use disparaging phrases to describe Martinez, or, simply refer to him as the ‘Spanish One’ or similar.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but for anyone who watched him in his playing days, it would be difficult to be disrespectful towards him (perhaps that could possibly cloud the judgement for people like myself).

Do you not respect the fact that we have a young manager who is still learning, and who is trying to do something different at Wigan? Yes he has made mistakes, but there have been good performances. Also, he is the first manager for an awful long time who is genuinely happy to be at the club.

Every manager favours players he has worked with in the past (for a examples look at Bruce bringing ex-Birmingham players with him, and even Jewell with ex-Bradford players), and granted, Scotland and Gomez have not yet lived up to their pre-season hype.

The aim for this season is to stay up and then build from that next season, so can we not wait until May and then judge if he is ‘clueless’ etc. then?

I don’t give a monkies if he drowns puppies or even if he shot JR (lol) – we need a Chairman who supports football and stops getting shut of our decent players, especially this year – he’s supposed to be selling up so we’l probably see him round Wigan doing his Xmas shopping with his transfer window fees! So there!!!!

Remarkable. Thanks for that insight, and I’ll bear it in mind before posting next time.

Incidentally, did you actually ‘laugh out loud’ when you posted that?

Nugent is not good enough and a trouble maker of the highest order.

We could do a lot worse than putting an offer in for Beattie. When your manager headbutts you, you know it’s time to move on. He’ll leave Stoke in January – you can bet your house on that.

As I say to my lads – its a team effort! You should never blame the keeper coz if the team was playing correctly it wouldn’t get as far as the keeper having to make a save! Same old upfront – maybe he hasn’t had the proper breaks to get his first but I too am confident that when he does – he’l score 4 fun! I think he deserves a bit more of a break! Yes there is someone to blame, for me, and its Mr Whelan – watch this space after the January transfer window – he’l line his pockets again and get rid of our best players – then Martinez will have no choice but to bring in his old Swansea squad! MEOW (don’t mean to be catty)

The post was going so well until you blew it at the end.

….didn’t you know that Whelan shot JFK, and he drowns puppies?

I really hope it is pronounced the way it appears. Waldo Ponce would have been a fantastic Carry On character. An eccentric member of the aristocracy perhaps? Charles Haughtry would have been perfect for the role.

Unless we suddenly discover that Bill Gates is originally from Whelley, then Whelan is the best we can hope for.

    Great post, as usual.

However, fear not… apparently there was a chap around these parts once called Abram Bryn Gates, who may be related to t’other feller.

    Chances yet!
Griff, I too sit in the section that is regarded as the Eastbourne of the DW Stadium. In the sober light of day, I think the lyrics are a little too intricate, so I’ll suggest that the first two lines are sung over and over and over again.

Just read all the posts regarding Scharner and I agree that 3M for a player out of contract in the Summer is good money. But why are we going back to Swansea for another player? has Bob not bought enough whale from there?

Everything Whelan does and before I get crucified we owe him alot for having a club and being in the Prem reaks of doing it on the cheap. Bob was quoted as saying we don’t need to sell yet we are going to loose 2 of our better players. And we will replace them with a cheaper option and Big Dave will make a profit in the transfer window as he always has.

I have watched Wigan from Non league all the way to the Premiership but the way the club is run now is two veg. We will never be the biggest club but keep selling our best players is not going to put bums on seats in fact our crowds are dropping every year. All the Whelan fans are going to have a field day with this I can hear them now we have to sell to survive our crowds are not big enough but running the club like this is never going to increase our fan base.

    Hindley

I understand what you’re saying, and I’m sure everyone who posts on here would love to keep all the best players and attract a bigger fanbase, but it all boils down to simple economics.

If you keep all the best players, attract more punters, and hope for a full house every game, it’s still only an additional five thousand on the gate per game. Over the course of a season, if you assume that everyone pays £25 a ticket (per league game, which they don’t, but let’s assume), that’s still under £2.5 million in additional revenue.

Sell a player like Scharner – who could leave for free in the summer, and you get £3 million in one fell swoop. I’m not going to go into the old ‘do you know how much it costs to run a football club and service its debt’ debate, but considering Whelan is one of only a few chairmen in the country who have put their own personal money into their club, even if he was to make any profit, would he not be entitled to do so, considering there has been a reputed sixty-odd million outlay from his own funds?

Before you say it, no I am not a Whelan lover. I respect what the man has done for the club I have supported for thirty-odd years, but on a moralistic level, the man is a snake. As a business man however, he is phenomenally successful, and who would you rather have in charge of your club: a successful local businessman who is thrifty and keeps a tight ship, or an Arabic oil tycoon who will loan you endless millions but is likely to get bored and drag the rug out from under your feet when he sees fit?

Yes, the club survived in the past without Whelan, but it would never have reached the Premier League without him. Who else would have invested so much money in an ailing, unfashionable, financially ruined northern football club in a town where they only like rugby, other than a local multi-millionaire?

Unfortunately, that’s the way it will be at Wigan for the foreseeable future. The only economically viable way of attracting a bigger fanbase, whilst at the same time balancing the books, is to keep the club in the Premier League for as long as possible and hope fans are picked up along the way. If we pick them up, then we do, and if not, hey-ho, never mind. We’ll just have to keep buying the Paul Scharners of this world, enjoy their contribution for a season or two, then bid them good luck as they inevitably move on.

Unless we suddenly discover that Bill Gates is originally from Whelley, then Whelan is the best we can hope for.

Alan McGregor is the sort of keeper we need. Good shot stopper, brave, and desperately wants a move down south. Has a bit of penchant for texting photos of his undercarriage to young ladies, but everyone has his vices I suppose.

in reply to: January Sales #15496

Another window and rumours of more sales. We are in trouble this year make no mistake we have a team that can be good ie Villa, Chelsea but most of the time it stinks Wolves, Pompey etc. In my opinion we should be fighting tooth and nail to keep the players we have and looking to add a few not sell.

If Whelan thinks Bob is the man for the job then please give him some money in January and lets add some quality to ensure we are playing the likes of Chelsea and Villa next year.

Tha knows wiv only geet £50mill coming in this season tv and transfer revenue, its a struggle trying balance the books :o
Do they do one of those smiley things that bangs its head against a wall?

To quote Yogi Berra, ‘It’s déjà vu all over again.’

Surely all this was done to death in August? Please don’t light the touchpaper again.
