We haven’t had many ‘bad’ players so far and that is why we are where we are.
Nathan Byrne didn’t impress me early on but recently he has been fantastic. Would still love to see him play on the wing and sign a natural RB.
Which bit of “a non-disclosure agreement has been signed between both parties” is everyone struggling with?
We will hear nothing until it’s all sorted. It’s like any business take-over.Not good enough. I expect a phone call hourly from Jonny or Sharpie advising me of everything that goes on at the club.
Got our tickets. Can’t wait!
Looking forward to us winning, and also seeing the Iron. If I was a Londoner, West Ham would be my club. Shouldve stayed at the Boleyn, though. Sold the clubs soul down the river.
Cracking cup tie!
Would they still be your favourite London club had we been relegated instead of Sheffield United?
Had we been relegated, it’s because we weren’t good enough to stay up. It was winner takes all that day, and we won. Simple as that. You get relegated for a reason. You haven’t won enough games. Fact.
Lovely jubbly.
They weren’t good enough, that is why they illegally signed 2 players.
EDIT – And got away with it.
You have mentioned our finances with Barclays a few times Vat. A bit naughty of whoever it is that works there that has said it as Stu says.

Personally, I have mixed feelings about the takeover. Whether people like Whelan or not (why you wouldn’t as a Latics fan is a mystery) he has put this club into a good position. Very limited debt (and all to him anyway), great facilities and punching well above our weight.
I don’t think he would sell to anyone, but how many foreign takeovers have worked over the years? These guys could come in and take us to the Prem and get back their investment immediately but then what happens? Do they take the money and run leaving us with high wage bills and no income? If we don’t make the Prem after they spend a pretty penny then will they just leave again leaving us with a high wage bill and no income? It’s a catch 22 I think. If they come in with the mentality of the guys at City and decide to build the club from the ground up then we could be in for another brilliant ride.
Wouldnt we just cut the running costs Vat?
Considering our current financial position, is a transfer embargo in the summer a real possibility?League one isn’t covered by the Financial Fair Play. It is governed by the Salary Cost Management Protocol (SCMP). This protocol states that clubs relegated from the championship can spend no more than 75% of turnover on wages. We are currently operating at around 300%.
The penalty for over spending is a transfer embargo. If we fail in our bid for promotion then this SCMP penalty will apply to us, unless, the club owners make a one off cash injection which can count towards turnover. This cash injection would need to be in the region of 12Million to bring down the wage/turnover percentage.
I’m starting to fully appreciate why the Whelan family are selling up.
There has to be a dispensation period though because you can’t just cancel contracts so it will depend on that and exactly what contracts players have in place.
Has the actual figure been released?
If players got improved contracts after promotion without relegation clauses in them or new signings like Burn didn’t have them in then that wage bill is a possibility.
As I have posted on here many times I was taken to Anfield to watch Liverpool play City my first ever game back in the sixties but never became a fan of either. Shortly after I went along to watch a team from Wigan playing in some non league cup game and became absolutely hooked. Do I regret not becoming a glory hunter do I bollox. I’ve seen more than enough glory from this barmy and brilliant club to last 2 lifetimes. One life One Love One Wigan Athletic.Similar to myself really. Was a rugby fan from day one as my Dad used to take me to games from 89 onward. Got into football in 92 and my Auntie told me to support United. Went watching Latics a few seasons later and was instantly hooked. Watched Latics on a regular basis with people like JayT and “followed” United almost as my PL team, but when someone told me I could only support one team I instantly said Latics. I wasn’t upset if Utd lost but I was if we lost.
Went to high school in 97 and got a real hatred for armchair fans who would take the piss on a Monday/Wednesday after we had lost (usually a game I had gone to home or away) while celebrating watching Grandstand or Football Focus and Utd winning. Could never give a satisfactory answer apart from “they’re the best” as their reason for supporting Utd. Seen plenty of them hanging around The DW when we made the PL but they have suddenly vanished again.
Might not do pay on day to ensure no hammers without tickets get in.
If it is then you will probably have go ticket office first.
If we go with as strong a side as we did against Bournemouth, then so do I Vat.
We played them in the league cup down there but not sure about the FA.
EDIT – Having checked this very site it was 2003/2004. Would have both been Championship sides then as well.
There are some of us that rejected Liverpool at the height of their fame and came and supported Latics though :)
And Latics have given us far far far more enjoyment than staying with Liverpool ever could have. Add in a son and grandson who genuinely are lifelong Wigan fans.
Am I a sort of reverse glory hunter? :DSeeing as Liverpool have won f*** all for years……………
Exactly the sort of ‘fan’ that is everything wrong with football.
I used to speak regularly in a work capacity to a gentleman from Plymouth who was a Liverpool fan and referred to them as “we” and “us” at every chance and used players nicknames like “Stevie” as though he knew the bloke.
Instead of “Gerrard had a good game” he would say “Stevie had a good game”.
Utter muppet.
I would much prefer to listen to the views of the Plymouth manager who says we are far too good for Div 1.I think we know that, but are we good enough for the championship? I would say this side is better than 2 years ago so hopefully if we buy smart we will be.
Best one I ever heard was a lad I used to go school with.Him and his parents watched LATICS. They went to Wembley in 85, he had a fully signed programme as his dad knew Graham Barrow. I remember seeing said lad and his dad, outside Vicarage Road when we played them in FA Cup in 1991.
By the time we met up again and went college in 93/94, he was a cherry and white wearing, rugby league preaching Warriors fan. Totally not interested in LATICS, and doing his best to convert people to Rugby League.
We lost touch after college in 1996, and but in the early to mid 2000’s, I was told he had a season ticket sat in the Kop at Anfield. Lord knows who he supports now… Man City? Who knows.
How can you just swap like that? It seems that when we hit hard times in 92/93 he jumped ship. Weve had a few more like that in recent years.
I don’t get it if you actually go to games or live in the town. If you’re an armchair Liverpool fan from Cornwall then I’d imagine it’s easy.
