I didn’t see too many people berating our performances during that run though. It was all Wembley and promotion. Now that results have dipped it turns out we weren’t that good.
It’s the Wigan way. If every game isn’t won convincingly then the Managers crap, the players are crap and the clubs on its arse.
We’re 6th in the table and TBH I don’t think we know our best XI yet properly.
The next few weeks will determine the season for me. If we can get out the busy period and still be in the top 6 then we’ve a massive chance of going up.
I wonder what killed our goal scorers moments last season?
We didn’t even get much of an opportunity of hearing any canned music or to do any silly American rowing dances at all. What is that shite they do sort of rowing or canoeing to celebrate.Last seasons gone. We were shite. We got relegated. Move on.
Very true Egg, but we should beat these men no worries. Even though we are in a bit of a sticky patch. There we go
Or he could have been seeing ££££s in his eyes. Indeed that probably was the turning point for Latics as far as pushing up the league but also the point that Whelan realised that to push on much further was going to hurt his pocket severely. Even more of Bruce’s side were to leave before the start of the next season.
Seems we have always lost players to balance the books. The biggest worry now is there is not much left to sell.It probably was around then that Whelan saw there was a fine line between ambition and financial stupidity.
We don’t have the overinflated wage bill that we used to have in the Premier League and we operate under a stricter financial model these days, so I’m confident we don’t have to sell as much to balance the books.
I’d say that we don’t need to do at all now that the big Championship earners have gone.
Would be interesting to see what happens if we do get promoted. Would we throw money at the division or try and go up ‘on the cheap’?
I thought that was Max Power’s worst game in a Wigan shirt. Dreadful.
They wanted it more than we did that simple. I’d have taken a loss today tjough if we win in 2 weeks. Wembley would be nice but promotion is the aim.
Power our best player, Grigg mom for his goals.
No mention of Davies? different gear when he came on.
Thought Power’s passing was poor. He seems to spot the killer pass but then knocks it too short or too long. I am a fan of his though.
Yes, Davies was a bigger threat than Revell who seems to have gone a bit stale since his goal.
The Latics are now a League One team after Owen Coyle, Uwe Rösler and Malky Mackay all failed to stop the rot that followed relegation from the top flight just days after the Cup final. According to Gary Caldwell, “the whole club lost its identity” during the ensuing slide – and the task now facing the former club captain is to rebuild it as Wigan’s fourth manager since Martinez’s departure.
Just wonder why they say “the rot that set in following the relegation”. Surely this rot had set in whilst we were in The Premier League and should include Roberto amongst the list of managers.
A more accurate description however would not be a rot as this decline came as all these managers struggled within the financial restraints that had been put on them from above and to give credit here to Bob for him to have kept us in there whilst under those restraints was a job well done.
The article could and should have made comparisons with Latics who have suffered the consequences of having to live within their means and the situation that can arise like it has at Bolton if a club goes along with its head in the sand.
Interesting to hear GC’s wishes and hopes for what he wants to do with Latics but this will only happen by living within our means this time and rightly so. We have had a brilliant journey financed by Whelan and Sky’s handouts and it was fantastic. Let us now show the football world we can do it again but this time starting with a secure financial base that GC has been left to work within even if this doesn’t happen overnight. Are you on the wind-up, or do you actually believe that?
Under Martinez we beat the likes of United, Arsenal , Chelsea, City and Liverpool and won the FA Cup! Hardly a ‘rot’ setting in.
We survived by the skin of our teeth in Jewell’s second season, and looked to be heading that way again toward the end of Bruce’s time with us. Martinez’s distinction was that he managed us in the Premier League longer than his predecessors, and the inevitable relegation took place when he was in charge.
Yes, there were stricter financial constraints under Martinez, but the ‘rot’ they’re referring to is the core of an FA Cup winning squad failing to perform in the Championship and ultimately getting relegated.
Steve Bruce’s second season with us was our most comfortable season in the prem I think Standish. We were safe with a few games to go if I remember rightly.
We finished 11th I think but I think he’s probably referring to the fact that we were chasing Europe until we ripped the squad apart in January.

He caught that in his last few months with us TBH.
He seemed to save them against Bolton the other week though with some top saves.
It set in last season for me. Don’t forget that the season before we were a penalty shoot-out away from a successive FA Cup Final (or 6 minutes if you take into account us being 1-0 up) and had James McClean not missed an open goal then we would have been in the Playoff Final as well.
Then in the summer we had players touting moves here and there and then when they didn’t happen they spat their dummies, under performed, had the Manager sacked and then of course we brought in Mackay which seemed to just totally rip the club apart.
We got a decent crowd against Blackpool for a Tuesday so should be better on a Saturday.
Surprised we open two TBH.
Hoping for a decent sized crowd on Saturday though. No excuses with the price really to not at least get our average.
Never touch a trophy until you’ve won it.
Jeez fellas, those chips must weigh heavy on your shoulders. As a fan of both I don’t see them as chips. In most cases it’s complete bollocks that they’ve been led to believe from previous generations.
I know Wikipedia isn’t exactly the most authoratitive source but:“Papua New Guinean rugby league has been hampered by the poor infrastructure in the country, and national competitions have proven difficult to sustain. Violence at large games has also become increasingly of a problem, and nations are reluctant to tour Papua New Guinea due to safety concerns. Nonetheless rugby league continues as a sport, and is played sporadically across the nation, with competitions in major cities and some rural regions alike.”
It IS the most popular sport there, I concede
They best get that sorted if they’re to host games in the World Cup in 2017.
