going into these games believing they could get somet from em
Given that Harry is from Bath, it might help to point out to him that “somet from em” means “something from them” :ugeek:
it was paul scharner who gave that interview & i believe they were the exact words he used!!!!
just noted i missed boyce out of my list above so that makes it good 4 v 9 badThe signings he started to make in our 2nd season in the top flight became increasingly poor
VALENCIA
KIRKLAND
HESKEY
BOYCE
KILBANEthese were poor signings ??
also
denny landzaat –
perhaps not a roaring success but not poor by any means still playing in dutch 1st divisiondavid cotterill –
highly thought of youngster that didnt push on all teams sign this type of playerfitz hall –
wasnt as good as his reputation – but he played against us in the premiership 2 weeks ago and was solid until going off injured (perhaps that says more about how good our current team are) – granted not one of our better signingsjanuary transfer window
caleb folan –
not the best player -all heart (scored more goals than boselli, scotland and di santo put together) 500k purchase who scored some very important goals that kept us up – sold on for 500k profit – i would rate him as a successdavid unsworth –
brought in short term to shore our defence up – proven premier league player – stoic last day defensive performance and the nerv jangling penalty he scored against his old club ensures he will always be a hero at wigan —failure ???? no wayjulius agahahowa –
no doubting this fellah was a failure – but he had pace to burn and had scored plenty goals in the past so he was worth a shot although it didn work out.
so apart from fitz hall and a couple of punts/gambles on a 19 year old(cotterill) and a speedy goal scoring striker who failed i think jewell record is pretty damn good.
note that i said “increasingly poor” and not that they were all poor
its all about opinions and i stand by what i said:
denny landzaat – regardless of who he is playing for now quite simply wasn’t good enough for the premier league
david cotterill – again not good enough. it doesn’t matter in the slightest that all teams sign promising youngsters that don’t work out. we are talking about jewell specifically and this turned out to be a poor signing
kevin kilbane – signed as a left winger, dropped & (bizarely) put in the middle by jewell then dropped. it was only under hutchings & bruce that he served a purpose as an emergenc left back. for that season under jewell he wasn’t good enough for the purpose for which he’d been signed for
fitz hall – complete and utter garbage for latics. poor signing
caleb folan – not good enough for the top flight. again that he scored more than 3 of bobby’s signings is irrelevant as is the fact we made a profit on him coz he wasn’t anywhere near good enough for the top flight. enjoyed his goal at city mind!!!!
david unsworth – a penalty in 1 game doesn’t make him a good signing. in his other thankfully brief appearances he showed that he was well & truly past being capable in the top flight. the penalty he gave away at home to everton shortly after coming on was idiotic
julius aghahowa – whether his record made him worth a shot is debatable. even if you think it was it still turned out to be a poor signing
there was also granqvist & the other scandanavian who were well & truly out of their depth & who he kept well away from 1st team action after appearing once or twiceon the other hand heskey, kirkland & valencia were good signings so in my opinion i make it:
3 good uns
9 bad unsThis is a difficult one really coz for what he achieved in his time here he will always be a club legend & so any criticism of him makes anyone who does look like a really ungrateful git
For his plus points, these are pretty obvious – he took us from the 3rd div to the top flight in 4 seasons & when he left had kept us there for 2 seasons & got us to a major cup final. We also played some bl00dy good football under him. I don’t really need to go into any more detail than that. And he signed some great players who gelled together perfectly (up until the last season anyway)
On his bad points – as the poster above has mentioned, tactically he seemed very limited. he had 1 formation & one approach to games & if it didn’t work he rarely seemed capable of doing anything to turn ti around (I seem to remember one game where latcis were losing & his match changing substiution was to take a right back of & put a right back on & keep the same formation)
He also seemed to have a bad attitude towards playing the “top sides” when latics were in the premier league anyway where he would spend most of the build up to the game admitting the game was as good as lost. You could see this pass over to the players when the game was played & it was interesting to note that when Steve Bruce started one of our players (since left) stated that for the first time the team were going into these games believing they could get somet from em
In his early days the team was awful & it became quite clear that he didn’t have the respect of his players. He wasn’t able to sort that out & it needed the intervention of our chairman for that to happen
The signings he started to make in our 2nd season in the top flight became increasingly poor
I don’t think that if he’d stayed, Latics would still be in the top flight – he himself admitted that he’d taken the club as far as he could
Steve Bruce are Martinez seem much better at selling the club to potential signings than he wasIf I was an Ipswich Town supporter I’d be looking at giving him at least a year before passing final judgement on him – Paul Jewell is either an all or nothing manager in that he’ll be a great success (Latics & Bradford) or he’ll be awful (Sheff Wed & Derby)
To be honest I’m not “rising” to them as such but if someone is going to be idiotic & petty enough to slate a sport coz they don’t play it in Nottingham etc.. then they really need pulling up on “facts” that are completely incorrect
That way maybe they’ll avoid repeating them in public & avoid tagging all latics fans with the “moron” brush many of the warriors brethren tar us withWRONG……..can someone wake this mon up. There are NO top flight sides in lancashire….FFSHere’s a clue…….on my letters it says greater manchester, i’m pretty confident that it shall state the same on yours.
A bit like someone holding a tenner up, but YOU saying it’s actually twenty???????it’s not it’s a feckin tenner.
Well I live in St Helens, so no it doesn’t say Greater Manchester.
When i lived in Tyldesley I had a Manchester postcode but lived in the borough of Wigan
The fact is, & one you completely & totally missed from my initial post, that Greater Manchester is not a county, neither is Merseyside – they are administrative regions.
Lancashire is a county in the true & traditional sense of the word & contains many rugby league teams.
If you go by your definition of counties then your statement that you lost count of how many sides there were in Yorkshire is incorrect as there is no such county as Yorkshire (by your definition) – its west yorks, south yorks, north yorks etc…Not incidentally that I could give a rats @r $e what counties or countries play the sport
8 September 2011 at 12:30 pm in reply to: Is This Not Racist To Imply That White’s Are Racist #71140I was under the impression that positive discrimination was illegal in this country, although I think that if someone with a disability matches all the job spec then they are guaranteed an interview so the PFA may try & introduce something like that
I don’t think that it would get as ridiculous as a club not being able to appoint a manager if there were no black candidates to offer an interview to but don’t let that get in the way of a “political correctness gone mad” rant!!!
To be honest, if the PFA are moving on this because they’ve got some form of evidence that is able to show/prove that black/asian etc.. candidates for posts are being ignored for interviews for white candidates with no more qualifications or experience then I can see where they’re coming from.
If their only evidence is 92 professional clubs, only 2 non-white managers & therefore the clubs are racist then I get the initial posters point (well some of it anyway)I don’t normally contribute to these types of threads but will make an exception:
MickyC – Swinton Lions are no more a Manchester club the the Salford City Reds are. The town of Swinton falls under Salford city council & from the Tyldesley side of Manchester you have to drive through it to get to Salford. The last time I heard they were playing at Salford City FC’s ground too
Rodellegabomb – the county of Lancashire (as opposed to the govt/council boundaries as they were redrawn in the mid 70’s covers many towns with rugby league sides – leigh, wigan, st helens, swinton, salford, rochdale, oldham, etc..
Fabregas is an idiot? What on earth has he done to deserve that?
Exactly my point. My original comment of ‘What exactly has fabregas done’ should have finished with wrong….. I think the guys a class act, and could only dream of him joining the latics.
i think he’s a superb footballer but, from what I’ve seen, as a person he comes across as a bit if an idiot.
Part of it I think comes from the whole arrogant & petulant attitude that Arsenal give off (on the playing side)
An example of why I think he’s a bit of an idiot as a person is a cup game at Hull a few seasons back when he wasn’t even playing but saw fit to go on the pitch at the end & rub the noses of the Hull players in it – think that was also the same game where Brian Horton accused him of spitting at him in the tunnel tooFair enough Diouf and Barton as they are both Bel-ends wouldnt let them play in my sunday league team. And i understand Drogba is an idiot in previous seasons. The whole Lehmann era etc. Yeah Ronaldos ignorant and arrogant, but i suppose his arrogance is justified considering hes the 2nd best player in the world and breaks records every season. What exactly has Fabregas done? :?Do you mean aside from being a member of the Spanish world cup winning squad? Not much. Plus the best club side in the world have just spent 2 years trying to sign him coz they felt he would improve them & wound up paying about £35mill for him.
For the record all the players mentioned above come across as idiots to me, but if they played in a Latics shirt I wouldn’t care less
wash your mouth out….diouf
Barton
Ronaldo
Fabregas
DrogbaIf any of these players ever disgraced the DW I would seriously have to consider whether or not I bought my season ticket…disgusting footballers all of them for varying reasons.
Whilst on, because I don’t bother much these days…..keep up the good work Bobby…I can see a proper squad being assembled and we WILL be okay this year.
So if latics signed a bloke that the world’s best team have spent the last 2 years chasing (Fabregas), along with a bloke who has won the world player of the year award, european player of the year award & scored 57 goals last season in La Liga (+ cups) (Ronaldo), plus a bloke who has scored 145 goals for his club in the last 7 seasons (Drogba) & Joey Barton then you would give up your season ticket coz (for one reason or another) they don’t hit your g spot as people???????????????????
Dear oh dear
He wasn’t always crap – far from it. he’s played top flight football in this country far too long to have that label attached to him
Aint seen enough of him for a while now to comment as to whether he is crap nowI couldn’t care less what a player has done in the past or who they’ve done it to, if they’re good enough then I’d welcome em to Latics
Whether Diouf is good enough these days is another matter
.
I wasn’t being negitive on Gomez, just saying he ain’t a winger. I thought his game on Saturday was good and to be fair, young Jimmy Mac wil struggle to reclaim that spot if Gomez carries on (and why would you change it). He did fade towards the end before he was subbed. There were a few mistakes and lack of willingness to make the tackle but he had put a shift in for the first 60 minutes.
keep it up and he can become a latics legend.
He will never be a Latics legend as long as you have a hole in your arris !! He is Championship standard at best accept it !! I don’t boo him or get on his back but I do sit there thinking ” What the fcuk is RM doing starting him every game ” !!!
To be fair. Gomez’s starting games to available games ratio is very low in the 2 seasons he’s been here so Bobby hardly plays him every game
However he has been mostly poor when called upon – that said he was finally played in his natural position on Saturday & had his best game in a latics shirt. He deserves to keep his place ahead of James McCarthy who hasn’t hadn’t a decent game for quite some timeCameron jerome i can’t understand – has never really scored bagfulls for Brum & never impressed me when I’ve seen him play. Can’t understand him wanting to go there either as with Jones, Crouch, Walters & Fuller their other strikers, I think he’ll struggle to get a game
Peter Crouch – will be a good signing for them. I don’t rate him in the slightest but he does seem to know where the net is. Don’t think he’ll be much of a weapon on their long throws coz for a bloke who is 8ft 6″ his ability to win the ball in the air (without clambering all over his opponent & using them as leverage) is woeful
Wilson Palacios – was a great player for us & a Spurs mate of mine was always raving about him whenever I spoke to him. Seems to have completely dropped off the radar recently though & will be interesting to see if this slump is permanent
