Paul Scharner was not released as part of any cost cutting measures. He was released due to his god awful performances on the pitch in his “chosen” position (hence whey he wasn’t starting many games in the back end of the season) & coz Martinez finally got sick of his god awful attitude (he confirmed as much in an interview a few weeks before the season finished)
So again, Mr Scharner not matter how many times you tell it to yourself or other people it won’t make it true

As much as I have criticised Bruce’s style of play he was adamant that Scharner would play at centr-back and centre-back only and, if memory serves me right, that’s what happened.

If I remember rightly, after taking charge, it took Bruce the Man City & Bolton games to publicly state that from then on Scharner would be used as a centre half – think he also said somet along the lines of that was the position he was playing when he tried to sign him for Brum and that was where he’d have been playing had bruce been successful in signing him

It was the first sign I saw with Bruce that he knew what he was doing. Likewise when Bobby listened to Scharner’s “I should be playing in midfield” rant a couple of games into last season that’s when I first had major doubts about Bobby’s judgement

I think he might be getting him confused with Kingson going to Blackpool!!!!

He’s bob on though in his assessment of Scharner & I’d have loved to have seen Scharner’s face when he asked his agent how many of these “big” clubs were interested in his services!!!!!

I always thought it was interesting that our 3 worst performances in the top flight over the course of a season or period of time all came when Scharner was used predominantly as a midfielder – Under Jewell in our second season up, under Chris Hutchings & last year under Bobby. Gotta be more than coincidence!!

i stopped buying them many years ago when I got fed up with them (the WEP in particular) running hooligan scare stories on a regular basis before England games & tournaments and using the fact that a tiny minority of Latics fans had banning orders to link it into some local angle condemning Latics fans

On their Latics coverage as a whole its a million times better than it used to be in our lower league days when you could go for days, during the course of a season, without seeing any Latics related stories in the WEP

As for the ongoing story about Lopez, maybe the local press have got hold of it & have contacted Latics but Latics have requested they don’t run the story as (from what I can understand of the translated stories that have popped up on here) his current/previous club are querying the footballing legality of him being anywhere on trial or otherwise with any other club except them

Can I ask those on here who are lambasting N’Zogbia for putting in a transfer request whether they did the same when McCulloch tried to force through a move to Rangers in the January transfer window before he eventually left?

My recollections of that are McCulloch freely admitting he kicked up a right stink in order to try & get Jewell to let him go and when the transfer window closed he even gave an interview stating he’d wanted to leave, was gutted Latics wouldn’t let him go but he just had to accept things and would now “start” to give his all for Latics (I always took that to be that during the transfer window he hadn’t been

I seem to recall at the time McCulloch getting barely any stick on here in fact it was the opposite with people praising his previous contributions & saying who wouldn’t want to join their boyhood club. No accusations of being disloyal, no accusations of being a judas or scum. At the time I likened it to being worse than Chimbonda’s actions

Bar the timing of both Chimbonda’s and N’Zogbia’s transfer requests I don’t have any particular problem with what either of them did because, as LMB has pointed out, we’ve all left jobs at the drop of a hat for better paid ones. But that is all they did – said they wanted to move. Chimbonda never came out & started saying in the press stating that he wanted to go to club x & Latics should let him go. Neither has N’Zogbia where rumours of storming out of training & going on strike have been denied by the club & so remain just that – rumours

Should Bobby decide to pick N’Zogbia again he’ll have done so cause he believes its the right thing to do & I’ve no problem with N’Zogbia wanting to go anywhere for more money as long as when he steps out on to the pitch in a Latics shirt he gives his all

“”Now it’s up to me because I’m signed as a midfielder and this is my best position”

No it isn’t Mr Scharner – never has been & never will be and that won’t change no matter how often you tell everybody

Latics have announced a 19 man squad of Kirkland, Pollitt, N’Zogbia, Boyce, G Caldwell, S Caldwell, Watson, Thomas, Stam, Gomez, Rodallega, Diame, Figueroa, Gohouri, De Ridder, Al Habsi, Alcaraz, McArthur & Boselli

    in reply to: Kingson #45135

Kingson was a feckin awful keeper, although marginally better than that Serbian guy we had on loan

We must have been watching different world cup’s coz he was just as bad for Ghana – the occasional good save from a shot but flapping around like no-one’s business whenever the ball came into his box

Whilst Kirkland form has undoubtedly dropped since Bruce (or more specifically Nigel Spink) left neither Kingson or Stojkovic are fit to lace his gloves

N’Zogbia – I don’t normally point out people’s spelling mistakes but since you ask it is “abysmal” “alot” and “he’s”

in reply to: Will this team see us OK #45029

On what we’ve seen from the 4 games so far the team is capable of the mind bogglingly awful as well as the pretty good

Bearing that in mind its likely to be a very similar season to last season so I think we’ll be scraping in and around the relegation zone

However i said after the Blackpool game that both Bobby & the squad needed 10 games to show us what they were capable of this season & I stand by that. How anyone can think based on the 3 league performances that they can get up to 12th is beyond me

    in reply to: n’zogbia #45014

I don’t care where Stoke play him if they sign him

The move, coupled with us not seemingly being linked with any wingers whatsoever, leaves me slightly baffled as to how latics will play a system that includes 2 wide midfield men without any recognised wingers in their squad – Rodallega aint no left winger in the memory of man, Moses produced his best form for his previous club in the centre, from what I’ve heard from United fans they rate Cleverley very highly “as long as Fergie doesn’t ruin him by sticking him out on the wong like he did with Fletcher”

As big a plant pot as N’Zogbia seems to be he was the one player in the entire squad capable of stretching the opposition & getting behind their defence

yeh I know what you mean, how can we be expected to go down to the likes of Spurs with no recognised wingers and get a re…………fek me!! :D :o   [/quote]

One good result does not a decent season make.

Aside from that, did I say that from time to time our squad (minus N’Zogbia) isn’t capable of getting results? It clearly is – its also capable of performing extremely badly & in those instances we (IMO) need to have various options open to the manager to enable him to try & turn that around. You don’t need me to explain when having someone with N’Zogbia’s abilities would be good to have on the pitch (either from that start or to be introduced from the bench) but if he had gone those plan B, C & D options that Bobby seems so reluctant to use

Besides which its all irrelevant as he hasn’t gone & I’m pretty certain that if he had gone there would have been a few more signings brought in (including someone to play his role)

in reply to: The Duke’s weekend review #44876

The performance from the keeper, back 4 & the defensive performance of the midfield was a world away from what we’ve seen at the back end of last season & so far this season so for that they (Bobby, coaches & players alike) deserve an immense amount of credit

I wasn’t one of the alleged 60 who went so can only go off what I saw on Sky’s extended highlights but one big failing that was still there was the giving away of possession in dangerous positions & it was something the commentators picked up on several times. They did it last week & were ruthlessly punished by Chelsea but this week a combination of better defending & a Spurs side who weren’t on top of their game meant we weren’t punished this time round. Other teams will take advantage of it though & hopefully this will get cut out

On another note, I’ve seen on other threads that Bobby seemed to change things both tactically & in terms of how he deployed his players. Now I’ll admit to watching it on Saturday through a bit of an alcohol induced haze & the only thing different tactically that I noticed was Stam on the right hand side of midfield & assumed that was because of Moses & N’Zogbia’s absence.
    What else did he change?

in reply to: Paul Scharner in BIG club shocker……….. #44851

leaving the “what exactly makes a club big” debate to one side I have to admit to having quite a chuckle when i saw Scharner had signed for the Baggies

As someone else has pointed out, we’ve had to listen to Pul Scharner pontificate for the last 2 to 3 seasons about what level of football he deserved to be playing at & therefore which clubs he should be playing for as opposed to Latics
Well now he’s signed for one of possibly the only 2 or 3 sides in the top flight who are worse than Latics & who have even less chance than us of playign European football.
So what happened Paul – did all of these “big” clubs laugh in your agents face when he hawked you around this summer
I always rated Scharner as a centre half but his attitude stank under Hutchings, Bruce & finally Martinez and his over-inflated sense of his own self-worth knows no bounds. i expect to be reading from him around March or April time when WBA are in the relegation mire that he’ll be looking to move on in the summer & that Liverpool, Everton & Villa are all looking at him coz he deserves to be a central midfielder at a top 6 club
On his abilities as a central midfielder I read Di Matteo spouting in the papers about what a great midfielder he was – he can’t have watched him much
