“A series of vertical pipes driven into the ground with a vent attached to the top allowing the natural release of ground gases”
Haven’t Latics got loads of those dotted around the stadium? Anyone know what they’re for if they aint for the venting of the undergound gases??
Egg – you yourself said “I think he means [RL is a better game] value for money wise (which i’m sure was proven a number of years ago)” than other sports
Just how the hell is that proven??????? To make something “value for money” you have to get some enjoyment/benefit from it. My local snail racing stadium might offer entry for 1p as opposed to £20-£30 to watch Latics but I know which one I’d consider to be the best vakue for money. As its down to personal opinion as to what you enjoy, you cannot “prove” RL is better value for money than any other sport & vcie versa
My own opinion on RL is that I enjoy it more than many other sports. I’ve played it & I’ve watched it on TV quite a few times & in stadiums on about 5 occasions. I don’t however like it enough to spend my hard earned spare cash on it
What I will also say is that yes, I have seen some really dull 0-0 draws in my 30 odd years of going watching football & yes you will very rarely get dull 0-0 draws in rugby league. However I’ve also watched really entertaining 0-0 draws along with really entertaining 1-1’s, 2-2’s & 3-3’s
What rugby league suffers from far more than football does & what for me makes for very dull viewing is that its far easier to have completely 1 sided, walkovers in RL or games of which you know one side will heavily beat the other within mnutes of the kick off. Results like Latics getting beat 9-1 are freak occurences but results like Warrior’s beating Catalan 56-0 are far more common place & (to me) just as dull, if not more so, than a 0-0 draw down the football“OH and we recieve much less rain over our side of the pennines than Hull which is probably why Hull can keep a better pitch”
If I remember my GCSE geography correctly (& its going back nearly 20 years), the west side of Britain (usually) receives far more rain than the east. The main weather systems to Britain come in from the West & have usually dumped most of their muck before reaching the east. The on average wettest places in Britain tend to be in Cumbria
Can I just say as well that the pitch always looks in far better condition when Latics start to play on it again in August than it does from October to March
“i just can’t believe there is anyone at Wigan Athletic who would vetoe a perfectly good plan at the last minute purely on grounds of cost”
I’ve been scratching my head tryna think who that could have been too!!To be honest I’ve no idea where I’ve plucked this figure of £250k from (although it might be the figure quoted by the club when they carried out the work the other summer)
I’d be very surprised however if it only costs £6k. That works out at about £24 for a ton of sand based on 250 tons being put down at the moment nevermind the turf & the labour!!“It does beggar belief, as I said in my earlier post, that better measures weren’t taken (in fact some were actually vetoed) to ensure the stadium/pitch could cope with its poor environment.”
You’re not wrong. Seems a bit of a false economy now if Whelco are having to pay £250k every year for all eternity to relay the turf when it’d probably have cost little more than that to put the measures in place initially
“S you think Ramsay deserved to have his leg snapped because he was the quicker player? Just because Ramsay was quicker doesn’t mean Shawcross had the right to snap him… He shouldn’t have gone in like he did unless he was 100% sure he was going to get the ball.”
Hold on a second, where on earth did I put that Ramsay deserved to have his leg snapped because he was the quicker player?????
Or for that matter where I said that Ramsay had the right to “snap him” coz Ramsay was quicker???If you ban tackling unless the tackler is 100% certain that he is going to get the ball then you are going to create a very tame & tepid game. Football is & always has been a contact sport where players have to make split second decisions all the time.
Ramsay couldn’t have been 100% certain that he was going to get the ball, likewise with Shawcross.
Both players would have thought “I can get that” & gone for it. One got there fractionally before the other & there was a foul. Its what happens all over the pitch, all game but because in this instance a player broke his leg there’s all this moral hang wringing $h!te & its doing my head in. I hope Ramsay recovers & has a long career but all this “we need to stamp it out of our game” is (IMO) way off the mark.
Shawcross didn’t go in shin high, both feet off the ground, studs up but made a legitimate attempt to get the ball, the speed of Ramsay in that split second, the apparent buckling of Ramsay’s ankle before the challenge & then the challenge itself all combined in a complete freak accident to create what happenedreading the second article that’s appeared on the front page about the pitch & hearing it mention subsidence reminds me of a conversation I had in what must have been 1990ish with a friends dad who also happened to be a cabinet member of Wigan council & a Bolton fan
It was after a game at Springfield Park against Bolton & in the car on the way back I had to listen to em moan (again) about the poor state of Springfield park & in the away end in particular. From memory I think Bill Kenyon had looked into going to Robin park & claimed he received zilch assistance from the council & it was a non-starter.
Anyway to cut a long story a bit shorter I had a bit of a go back at my mate’s dad about the alleged lack of assistance from the council about a move to Robin Park. His reply was that the council & Latics had looked at the option several times & come to the conclusion that it wasn’t viable because the ground in the area wasn’t & never would be suitable for the weight of stands & other facilities needed for a professional sporting ground. I think his last words on it were “It’ll just sink” – as his main job was a surveyor of some sort I assumed he knew what he was on about & left it at that
When they started to build our new ground I assumed he’d been talking out of his ‘arris but reading that maybe not“Because the alternative would be either nobody in charge, or Barrow, or Jones” – or maybe, just maybe they could work behind the scenes & get a manager lined up prior to giving Bobby the heave-ho. Plenty of other clubs manage to do it
“Its not working…yet” – how long do we wait? I’ve seen no consistant sign that anything Bobby is trying to put in place is actually working, nor that the majority of his signings appear good enough for top flight football which would give me no confidence for next season should Latics, by some miracle, stay up
It isn’t working, shows no signs of working & we have a manager who appears out of his depth & unable to learn from his mistakes – topped off with seemingly demoralised players, short on ability & confidence in their managerAm I the only one not wringing my hands in righteous indignation at Shawcross’s challenge???
For fooks sake, football is a contact sport. That was a 50/50 challenge where he had every chance of getting the ball. Ramsay was a fraction quicker than him & got there first
He didn’t come in both feet off the floor, studs raised etc.. For as long as football has been played players have got injured, broke legs etc.. through challenges, and for Wenger to moan (again) about it when he used to have the likes of Viera in a team with one of the worse sending off records in the top flight is a bit rich.If we’re gonna start banning people attempting to win the ball in those situations then we may as well start watching netball
That said, how Shawcross has got an england call up is anyone’s guess
Just to add as well to the “Bruce did nothing from Xmas onwards” – latics played 21 games after Xmas last season & our record was:
W-6, D-5, L-10, F-13, A-23, PTS-23. Averaged over the course of a season that’s give us 41 points & safety
Our record from the last 21 games of this season is:
W-4, D-7, L-10, F-22, A-41, PTS-19. Averaged over the course of a full season that’s give us 34 points & possible relegation
However little the poster felt Bruce did after Xmas, it was more than Bobby has been doing
“bruce did nothing for us from xmas onwards”
To be fair to Bruce, he took us to a position where we were challenging for European qualification & then had some of his best players sold out from underneath him despit him publicly saying they would be “mad” to do so just weeks earlier.
The statements from our chairman that we were now safe & had to build for next season demoralised the manager, showed the players it was “job done” time & (as in our 1st season in the top flight) results suffered. There was also Cattermole’s injury which kept him out for a while & Valencia (understandably) not wanting to pick up a serious injury & ruin his chance of a move to United pulling out of games left right & centre. Bruce went from looking to keep the squad together & bring in & ship out in the summer to having some of his most important squad members sold & having to get replacement in to hit the ground running in a coupe of weeks.
Martinez had 1 player sold out from under him (Cattermole) & has had 2 full transfer windows to bring in his players. He was able to keep his squad together in January & he’s had 9 months to get the team playing “his way” yet our defensive problems only just seem to be lifting & going forward things seem to be getting worse by the week
“Don’t want to come across as all Claire Rayner like, but I think it was more than just copping off with an ex. It was the mother of his child and he was hoping to get back with her, if you believe half of the rags ….But as his so-called best mate, Terry was likely to have know they were his feelings.”
That’s pretty much what I said in my first paragraph
“As for Baines, you just know they’ll pick Lescott”
Unfortunately I think you’re probably reet. Criminal if it happens though. Still if he does pick him then that’s my prophecy on his debut of “He’ll play for England one day” come true – if only I’d tried to back that up with a bet at the bookies!!
“”I do enjoy the game but it is the players I like, as they are good looking.”
And there ends the party political broadcast from the “Ban women from football” party
“or someone who will pay off 70 million quid of debts with no chance of any return on the investment”
If you go into administration then its more than likely that you will never have to pay off the full amount of your debts, coz you are able to negotiate with creditors as to what you’ll pay back & they all take somet rather than nowt. The likes of Leicester & several other clubs did it & wound up paying back somet like 10p for every £1 that they owed which is why they introduced the points penalty for going into administration coz it was a kick in the teeth for those clubs who managed their finances properly
“I think you hit the nail on the head there Tyldsley, you dont know what happened and you have no way of knowing what Bridge must be feeling about the publicity……”
All i can think is that Bridge wanted to get back with this french woman & confided in Terry etc.. & all the time Terry was havin it away with her
If its just someone you know copping off with an ex then I aint sure I’d sacrifice a possible world cup place coz of it. Like you say though each to their own
I’m also of the opinion however that Baines should be in that squad ahead of any other left back with the possible exception of Ashley Cole. I heard some muppet/media “expert” on the radio yesterday saying he wasn’t sure whether either of the other alternatives (Baines & Warnock) were good enough & that they’d go with Milner at left back?????? :o :o :o
