Don’t you mean kn0b End fan?
If Paul jewell came in now I tell you exactly what would happen.
Results wouldn’t change one iota & he’d spend the next 3 months of the season publicly slating his players every week in post match press conferences, telling everybody he’d taken over a hopeless situation & it wasn’t his team & then he’d take us downWhich coincidentally is exactly what happened when he was brought in to save the day at Derby & he had a transfer window to help him then too
fair point, my comment is based on the Sjoke game when we brought thomas on and gomez, the shape of the team was lost in midfield. I thought last night, passing wasnt great which could be attributed in part to the pitch, but as a unit there was support at the back and players going forward. Apart from the first 10 minutes when we were determined to try and give the ball away in the back 4.I do think that if we stick with that team then we will start to click in front of goal.
I can see what you were getting at now. I don’t think its a vey good unit but I do take your point
“As for b), Liverpool, Man United, Man City and many foreign teams are living proof that the system works, albeit with better players”
I’m not just talking about the formation but the way that you play that formation
This 4-5-1/4-4-1-1/4-3-3 or whatever the hell you wann call it can be a really aggressive attacking formation if you play it in a certain way. If you don’t then it can produce some of the most tepid & turgid football you are likely to see
For most of this season its been the latter at LaticsAgain though that could be down to the quality of the players
“we seemed to work as a unit last night which was encouraging”
This is not a dig nor is it intended to be a question that tries to trip you up but can you explain that comment as its left me a little confused bearing in mind what i saw last night
“”The only way of winning a football match is by being good at what you’re doing,” the Wigan manager said”
But to be frank Griff, for the majority of the season it has been plain to see that Latics do not come under this category coz:
a) the players either cannot play the way he is asking them to play (possibly coz they don;t have the skill levels) or
b) the way he is asking them to play isn’t working coz it isn’t good enoughEither way he should be able to see that & rather than keep banging his head against a brick wall tactically have the guts & nouse to change things round to a system, formation, tactics etc.. that suits the players
“You can’t blame the pitch Jimmy. I’ve already had it pointed out to me that the pitch is just an excuse, and Martinez is the real reason why there were so many instances of poor control last night.”
The “pitch” can only be used as any sort of excuse for the last 3 games.
BUT the fact of the matter is that seeig as how we’ve only won 3 games at home all season its fair to say we were playing $h!t when the surface was like a bowling green so I can fully understand comments made that the pitch is just an excuse
Especially when you consider latics have only won 1 of the last 11 league games, played on all sorts of qualities of surfaces
At the end of the day, Martinez chooses the signings, the starting XI, the formation, the tactics & the substitutions. he has to take the majority of the blame for what has been for the most part some dire performances this season & to start blaming the pitch (and even the weather last night) now when we’ve played poorly most of the season is to be frank a poor excuseFair enough – its just a sad state of affairs that we only have one player we can look to who seems to have any sort of ability to create something from nothing
“He could go the whole hog and then play 442”
Don’t be daft!!
Anyway if Paul Scharner tells him that he will be playing in midfield, I’ve no doubt that that’s where Bobby will play him ;)
The only platform that he can possibly claim from last night is that we didn’t concede & haven’t been conceding many recently which I guess is a start
That said, a team with better finishers than Bolton would have put at least 3 past Latics last night whereas (N’Zogbia’s effort that hit the post apart) all our attacks just seemd to fizzle out without anyone having a serious attempt at goal
They never give the MOM award to an away player – ever. As well you know.
Out of the Latics players, N’Zogbia was the only one on the pitch with any sort of creative spark, with the possible exception of McCarthy.
His final decision making undoubtebly needs to improve but then again I said the same thing about Valencia the entire time he was here & we flogged him for £16mill & he’s doing alreet for himself at UnitedOn the subject of Bobby’s comments – if he was proud of that performance then he wants sacking. Immediately. I suspect however that he was less than pleased with the performance but is one of them managers who will not criticise his players in public. Unlike say a Paul Jewell who was very vocal in his criticisms and then used to pick the exact same players for the next game (for us & Derby).
Bobby’s approach is feckin annoying & it leads you to question his judgement but I can see the reason behind his thinking if indeed he is using it as a smokescreen to protect & encourage his playersOnly saw the extended highlights on Sky, but last night was a pish poor game played between 2 pish poor sides
Absolutely dire
They didn’t have the Popular side it was half the town end & the terracing near the supporters club & phoenix stand
Everything about that game was a real low point in Latics v Bolton history.
Mind you I never thought then that it would be over 12 years before we’d get to play the bastards againTony Kelly’s 50 yard own goal (whilst playing for Bolton) where he just turned & smashed it over Andy Dibble’s head
Bryan Grifiths 2 fingered salute
Suffering the embarrassment of giving Bolton half the town end & the Phoenix stand side of the home terracing & then watching their team absolutely wipe the floor with Latics (4-0 was it? or maybe I’m thinking of a result around the same time against Port Vale)“OK then what about subliminal messages sent out through radio and TV and on Doom Metal records ( When played backwards ! ) That might work !!”
The start of Slayer’s “Hell Awaits” album if played backwards has the phrase “Join Us” repeated over & over again
I’d like to nominate that as Latics sublimal advertising campaign leader to try & get more through the gates!!! -
