Summer: 14 players in, 10 players out.
If that isn’t the definition of wholesale changes, I don’t know what is. Then we back it up with January window – 13 players in, 8 players out.
If that doesn’t convince you, compare the XI that started the last ‘competitive’ game in league one, Blackpool away, with the XI that started the last game.
Jussi, Wabara, Daniels, Morgan, Warnock, Morsy, Perkins, Power, McCann, Grigg, Jacobs.
Gilks, Connolly, Buxton, Burn, Warnock, Hanson, Perkins, Gilbey, Obertan, Jacobs, Bogle.
3/11 the same.
That example is deliberately selective & you know it is!!
For example, Morsy would have played on Saturday if fit, Power would have played if fit, Grigg would have played if fit, Daniels would more than likely have been a regular this season (if fit), Morgan was also Joyce’s preferred centre half over Burn until he got injured.
Not to mention the fact that Wabara was offered a contract to stay (despite being in & out of the side after arriving), turned it down & the fact he hasn’t been taken on anywhere since indicates he aint that good & so needed replacing anyway.
Also the vast majority of those brought in (both in the summer & now) have barely been used. Likewise many of those who left last summer were fringe players or players who barely got a sniff of 1st team action & so needed replacingWe wouldn’t be able to afford McLaren & he’d want a transfer kitty which we aint going to have much of.
Think we need to be lowering our sights on this one. What about them two lads at Lincoln City, Danny & Nicky Cowley. Lincoln seemed to play in the right way from what little I’ve seen of them in the cup.
So did Rosler jimmy he played the right way at Brentford until he was forced to work with Barrow and was brainwashed into the Bobby way of doing things. What it is gonna take to get shut of this Mon. 5 managers later and the fireproof one is still here. Doesn’t matter who the next man is he will be told how to do it.
Nah, have to disagree with that one.
Despite his relative success there, Rosler was never universally popular with the fans at Brentford due to his playing style & his constant rotation system.
In fact he wasn’t universally popular with his players either & there were calls for him to be sacked until there was a clear the air meeting with the players where they aired their grievances & Rosler agreed to stop swapping the players about – result: they went on a barnstorming run that resulted in him getting the job hereBut then low & behold all the things that Brentford fans weren’t happy with him about whilst he was there, began to quickly manifest at Latics
To blame Barrow for Rosler’s errors is quite frankly ludicrous
I said it at the beginning of this season, why not give the core of that promotion winning team a shot at the Championship? But instead made wholesale changes.Where were these wholesale changes??
I’d argue the opposite, in that too much faith was put in key players from last season to be as effective at a higher level & that decision was either totally complacent or completely stupid.
With the exception of Le Fondre, Caldwell relied on the same forwards as last season & 3 of them had been released/sold from Championship clubs previously for not being up to that level (Grigg, Jacobs & Wildschut). It was plain last year that the defence allowed the opposition too many chances (normally through mistakes) and so the likes of Pearce needed to be moved on (just like Jewell jettisoned Breckin & Eaden when we got promoted to the top flight) & I think that decision has been justified with how strong the back line has been in general.
Jaaskeleinen needed competition for his spot but the mistake was bringing in Bogdan
There was also a mistake in not utilising Morsy properly & allowing him to leave. Gomez was a good decision to bring back & then wasn’t utilised in a system to suit him. Powell has just never been fitBut no I don’t think wholesale changes were the mistake coz I don’t think that that many were made
Go – I’m not a fan of changing managers willy nilly but this man has shown absolutely nothing to give us any indication that there’s some hope for the future.
I hope to God that there’s some clause in his contract limiting any pay off for getting sacked coz to think he could get the best part of 3 years salary for being an abject failure is galling
What a gritty performance against 12 men. I would like to know how many free kicks they got it was a joke18 to Latics 9
I remember getting clicked in by a steward with a clicker with a capacity of something like 1000 or so..After getting moved as a steward from the grass hill on the away end for telling Huddersfield fans to eff off, my mate got given that job.
He just made the clicker go to whatever number below 1200 he thought he’d be able to get away with coz he couldn’t be bothered counting who went in & outMe and my mate getting jumped near Bootham Cresant by four Latics fans.
The thick bastards thought we were York fans. They did apologise though.Reminds me of the time that there was that bother in the West Stand with Stoke fans the weekend after Stanley Matthews died.
My seat was right in the thick of it & as i was trying to get away some bloke grabbed hold of my jacket & accompanied it with “Ya f****n Clayhead c***”
Luckily I was able to point out my Latics lapel badge, he let go of me, laughed, apologised & then promptly lamped the fella stood at the side of me – no idea if he was a Stoke fan or notMe and my mate getting jumped near Bootham Cresant by four Latics fans.

Before that he’d only made 6 starts & 2 sub appearances out of his club’s 17 league games. I’d say he’d be some way short of full match fitnessDon’t think we need to be calling for Joyces head IMO.
As disappointing as it was losing to Sheff Weds, it wasn’t all down to Joyce. Warnock switched off for their goal (again!) and from what SSN said our goal that was disallowed shouldn’t have been.
He’s got a few players in now that are his choice so let’s see how we get on over the coming weeks.Latics disallowed goal was definitely offside.
That said, I agree with most of what you say. i very much doubt that Joyce is going into games telling the midfield not to back up Will Grigg & get forward in support of him.
You’re also right about Warnock – completely switched off for their goal & then did it again a few minutes later so he clearly hadn’t learnt his lessonWe had a go at teams irrespective of if they were considered a big club/promotion hunting club etc.No they didn’t.
Paul Jewell openly used to talk about how he wrote games against the “big clubs” off at the start of the season & the pre-match build up was all about us having no chance. He often used those games to experiment with new formations & tactics & I’m sure that I have a recollection of him going out to Anfield with an ultra negative team & tactics when Latics were struggling even though Fulham had turned them over a few days before.
I also remember Paul Scharner giving an interview when Bruce had taken over sayign that for the first time since he’d been at the club, they were now going into games against the bigger clubs believing that they could get something out of itDon’t get me wrong, Jewell was a legend for everything he achieved at Latics but don’t let that cloud your judgement on some of the mistakes he used to make
I’m a realist so I’ve got a fiver on 4-0 and a fiver on 3-1 just in case we score one, obviously hope I am wrong and that we win but just can’t see it!What odds did you get on 4-0? I looked last night on ladbrokes & it was only 17/2 – I didn’t think the rewards of putting a fiver on at those odds outranked the same of betting against my own team!!!
Do you believe we would have got the penalty we got at OT if the score was 0-0 or we were 1 behind?? I don’t.
Yes – It was nailed on
We will certainly have to agree to disagree because so were 3 against Arsenal, 1 against Utd (Rio handball) and 1 in the cup final that led to THAT goal – maybe 75/25 that one.
Of course refs make mistakes but I do think a 50/50 involving a big club and a little club will only ever go one way.
I’m only talking from experience to be honest. I know that I ref at a far lower level but I get accused of favouring one team over the other on an almost game by game basis & one of the favourite reasons is coz “the powers that be don’t want us in this league” or “they want them to win everything coz they’re the glory boys” but I’ve never met a ref (including some I run the line for who officiate in the football league) yet who could give a stuff which team wins.
If you’re talking about the carling cup semi against Arsenal – why Dowd didn’t think that the 2 fouls on Roberts weren’t fouls I have no idea. The one on Chimbonda, I would have given it but I’m biased, I think most Arsenal fans would have disagreed with it.
The Ferdinand one I think was a penalty but some refs don’t give them types including last night’s in the Liverpool v Southampton game
The Cup Final one? Nah – it was as much McManaman putting his leg in on the defender as the defender initiating the contact with him
It was on OUR home ground. Right on half way. The one at OT was Connor Sammon who was sent off thanks to Ryan Giggs running 40 yards.Of course refs make mistakes but they seem to make far more in certain places/situations.
Take the ref at the 2011 RWC Final for example. Clear penalty against NZ in the dying seconds that would have cost them the trophy on home soil. In France that gets given.
Aah – I’m getting my controversial incidents mixed up!!
Conor Sammon wasn’t sent off because Ryan Giggs ran 40 yards. He was sent off because Phil Dowd thought he’d done somet that he hadn’t & the FA rescinded the card
We agree that people & refs make mistakes, the issue that I have is that you seem to insinuate that the big clubs get more because the referees deliberately give them preferential treatment. They don’t
