I am being neither disloyal nor misogynistic when I say I am pleased the Women’s team have failed miserably in the Euros.

Success would have once again papered over the cracks that are the total lack of lower level support and development in this country in both the men’s and the women’s games, caused by the fixation on the Premier League and lack of investment by the FA in grassroots football.

I have to say that I disagree slightly – The FA has thrown an inordinate amount of money into the women’s game in recent years in order to get this WSL off the ground & IMO they might as well have thrown it straight down the drain. By all means encourage participation in the sport from garass roots level upwards but to chuck money into something to make it a professional league when the level of interest & support isn’t there (& is unlikely to ever be there) in the name of looking politically correct is a waste of time when grass roots football (at all levels & played by all sexes) is crying out for investment

Isn’t/Wasn’t one of the Everton fanzines called “When Skies Are Grey”? If that’s the case then I’d imagine that at some point in the past “You Are My Sunshine” has been sang by their fans
In fact I’ve heard it sang at quite a few grounds by opposition fans over the years, although usually with the “Sunshine” part replaced by whatever club it is they support

Only got back from my hols in the early hours. B)

Just checked Sky’s televised Championship fixtures…..big fat zero for Latics. :(

Leeds and QPR are on 3 times before the end of November. Bolton are on twice.

Their obsession with supposed in their eyes, bigger clubs with faded glories really pisses me off.

WE ARE THE FA CUP WINNERS !!!!!!!

Let’s hope we can rub their noses in it again. :)

Whoever chooses the football league TV schedule at Sky has a duty to the company’s shareholders to try & get the biggest TV audience possible for the games it shows. That’s in order to get more money from advertising & to try & entice more people to buy Sky Sports packages
Like it or not, games of the supposed “bigger clubs with faded glories” are more likely to do both of those things than Latics games are

You’ve missed my point completely Tyldesley. If you read what I said, I’m referring to numbers and cover for each position. When was the last time we had cover in the squad that meant we didn’t have to juggle players around in order to put a team out. i.e. left back gets injured bring a left back in. There have been too many times were our manager has had to play a right or left back at centre half or pushed a midfielder in at left back etc etc. There isn’t one player that Coyle has signed that has not got Prem League experience let alone Championship experience, so from that perspective I still feel its 100% our strongest squad. Even better if them other signings come off. B)

Apologies if that was teh case, but I’d still disagree with you to be honest
I think we’ve got too many keepers & central midfielders & we’re well short in other areas.
Up front we have 2 centre forwards & if he’s playing 4-4-2 then I’d say Coyle needs 4
I don’t think we have any cover/competition for McManaman on the right wing
You mention left back whereas as far as i can see we have Crainey & no-one else
If Perch has been bought as a right back we need A.N. Other assuming that (at this moment in time) it looks like Boyce will be viewed as a centre half. If Perch has been bought as a midfielder (where the Geordies said is his best position) then we need 2
Which brings me on to centre halves – we’ve lost Scharner, Alacaraz, Figueroa, Lopez & Golobart & so far brought in Rogne which gives us 4 centre halves still on the books & 2 of them are out with no return date as yet. We’ll need more than 2 fit centre halves.
If & when Coyle brings in 2 players to cover every position than I’d agree that in terms of numbers & cover the squad looks strong but at the moment, no matter what speculation there is, Latics are someway short of that situation

Actually, thinking about it last season’s squad met your criteria from what I can see – 3 keepers, 2 right wing backs (Boyce & Stam), 2 left wing backs (Beausejour & Figueroa), 7 centre halves (Alcaraz, Caldwell, Ramis, Scharner, Figueora, Lopez & Golobart), 3 capable of playing the right sided attacking midfield role (McManaman, Di Santo & Gomez), 6 in the middle (McCarthy, McArthur, Jones, Watson, Espinoza, Gomez), 3 up top (Kone, Di Santo, henriquez) – probably the only place cover was lacking was Maloney’s position

Was going down really that bad for the club ? A rough calculation based on losing say 5000 each home game would have us losing roughly £2.5m on gate receipts a season. Knock off roughly £500,000 for the increase in a season ticket cost and I reckon that circa £2m is the deficit. Now with parachute payments in the region of £12m a season for 4 seasons that leaves £10m extra for wages etc, now that aint all that bad is it ? Or is it ? Discuss ! :S

Last season Latics got £38.5mill in TV money from the Premier League which is made up of the same flat fees every club got £32.7mill + extra based on how many times they featured in the Sky live game
Whilst I don’t know the exact amount each FL club gets from the TV deal, the whole package is less than double at £65mill per season (between 72 clubs) that Latics received last year so it will be buttons in comparison. Even when you add on the £12mill parachute payment you are looking at a drop in income from TV deals alone (advertising & corporate revenue will now fall too) of about £20mill.
So yes, finaancially, getting relegated was that bad for the club – thankfully due to the financial management of Dave Whelan & Jonathan Jackson (not Martinez – he merely operated within the financial parameters he was set & IMO deserves praise for keeping Latics competitive in the face of some quite drastic cost cutting) it is not as bad as it could be

I in fact think our average attendance could be up.

Not wanting to sound too greedy, I would still like a few more additions, the Winger from Bristol city, the left back from Ipswich, the right back from Derby and the Utrecht striker would give us probably the strongest squad we have had in over twenty years.

Strongest squad in over 20 years?? Really? I think that’s being just a tad over enthusiastic jr
That’s not to say I’m not quietly impressed by & large by Coyle’s dealings this summer (although in all honesty I don’t rate Crainey, I don’t think McCann was needed in any way shape or form as about the only central midfielder on Latics books that I’d rate him in front of is Fyvie but the others have filled in gaps & on paper seem good Championship quality players) & who he is being strongly linked with at present but strongest squad in 20 years?? Never – not in any logical way I can think of anyway

in reply to: Suspended betting #117453

..on grant holt coming to wigan by sky bet…apparantly a flood of bets on
At 1/5 on has caused betting to be suspended.

Hope this one comes off, scored alot of goals at this level.

Agree about his record at this level, but he is 33 this year and at the wrong end of his career. If there is anything over a one year deal on the table, it is bad business in my opinion.[/quote]

A 2yr deal would be fine. If he scores a few goals this season but its obvious he’s too old & slow for the top flight if we get promoted then they’ll be plenty of championship clubs willing to buy him
Just like Eaden & Breckin were good enough to help get us promoted to the top flight, were still under contract yet Jewell was able to move em on

Interesting to note the comments about his best position being as a central midfielder & not much kop at defending as I’d assumed he was being signed as a right back – dunno why but I must have read that was his natural position.

Hopefully he will be used as right back coz personally I think the club has more than enough very good midfielders already here & I don;t think him or McCann are better or even as good as most of what we already have in that position

in reply to: £5 Million, Why ? #117221

Exactly – if he goes for £5mill then that’s what his buy out clause is. From what i can gather, the only negotiation still going on between Latics & Everton is how much of that Everton pay up front.

Bournemouth have arranged a friendly against Real Madrid.

Good for them you might say.

Tickets are £55 for ST holders and £60 otherwise!!!

Bloody ‘ell. & There’s me thinking that teh Charity Shield prices were a bit of a rip off for a glorified friendly

in reply to: Thomas Rogne #117059
    Possibly his contract expired yesterday?

More likely to be because of his age. His contract will expire at the end of June which is tomorrow & he could sign a pre-contract
I’m sure you have to pay compo for a freebie under the age of 23 & he turns 23 today

    in reply to: Boselli #117050
Ah, but did you see him play? There are only 3,548 who can say that :)

Count me in – I remember seeing some footage of him trying to chin a ref when he was at Roma after he’d been sent off. I was hoping we’d get to see a bit more of that but I think even the 90yr old Brendan Ormsby impressed me more when he made his debut
