IF (big if) bobby picks a near “full strenght” starting 11, i will be fookin fuming and gutted at the same time for the lads who don’t get opportunities to show us whether they have what it takes….they’ve got us to this position, LET THEM CARRY ON…..
So then, IF we put the usual full strenght team out and get beat…..what would you lot on here say then eh?????? BLOODY RUBBISH MARTINEZ, HE SHOULD HAVE PLAYED THE “CUP TEAM” FFS
1) So you were fuming & gutted when Jewell changed his carling cup selection & put out a full strength side against Arsenal in the semi-finals back in 2005/2006? I doubt it
2) If a full strength side were to lose to Everton on Saturday I would just chalk it off as getting beat by a better side but would know Latics had given it their best shot. If a “weakened” side loses I’ll be miffed that the manager wrote the game off befroe a ball was kicked
3) If a “weakened” side wins. I’ll be on here praising the tactical genuis that is roberto Martinez!!! ;)Does it really matter. I’ll still be supporting wigan whether it be versus man utd in the prem or versus runcorn town in the “whatever league they are in” – & TBH i have no idea what league my new adopted hometown team is in.NWCL Premier Division – as are Runcorn Linnets
Town are 3rd & Linnets are 5thI’m sorry but aren’t you supposed to match up your opponents in any team sport ?So when we already know Everton will have a best available 11 on the pitch then what exactly is the point of giving them the advantage straight from the start. He’s analyzed his squad depth against West Ham.Forest,Bournemouth twice,Bradford Macclesfield and Huddersfield so for me he knows what he needs to know.Yes I agree the cup teams have shown great eagerness but are they REALLY capable of getting a result against a very competent Everton team ?The time for playing a weakened side have gone .Our best 11 have an excellent chance of clawing out a result but sorry for me the team that beat Huddersfield…..forget it !Question for those in agreement with his possible selections on Saturday. If we did stun everyone and somehow got to the semi….should he play his fringe squad then or even the same in the final ?
Are you just moaning for the f*cking sake of it or what lad?
You moan about the team V Liverpool now your kicking up a fuss because he isnt playing the same team V Everton.
spot on salford………they slated the team on sat’day night, then they want the same starting 11 on sat’day dinner time………………the “cup team” have earned their passage to the 1/4 finals and deserve to play in it……put it this way, would any person on here put all their effort into making something, then to be told that someone else who “ranks” above you will take all the glory at the expense of all your hard work!!!!!!!!
no fooking chance…….cup team all the way…..they’ve got us into this position not the 1st team……come on boys…..2 wins from immortality and a place in the history books
In 2005-2006 Paul Jewell played a fringe squad + some regulars in the Carling Cup.
When the team got to the semi-finals and had a genuine chance of winning it/getting to the final, he put out his strongest side out against Arsenal in both legs & won (we’ll gloss over the United result!!). I don’t recall one supporter saying that it wasn’t fair coz the likes of Skoko & Connolly had helped get us to that stage. Nor do I recall hearing of any discontent from within the squad about the decision although I’m sure those left out wouldn’t have been cock-a-hoop about it.I’m sorry but aren’t you supposed to match up your opponents in any team sport ?So when we already know Everton will have a best available 11 on the pitch then what exactly is the point of giving them the advantage straight from the start.

I’m sure brownbill doesn’t need anyone to fight his battles but your post is deliberately twisting what he’s said (which may well have been your intention)
There’s a world of difference between complaining that certain players are out of form & shouldn’t be starting league games, or should be dropped from the next one, and complaining that you don’t agree with Bobby’s cup selection policy & that naming a starting XI without our better players & replacing them with squad members & youngsters en masse is in effect almost like surrendering the tie before a ball has been kicked
Note he said our “best XI” and not “the side that played v Liverpool” ;)Nothing in this.Boyce was annoyed Mcarthur mispassed and left him outside their box with no chance of getting back to defend the counter.
He got a clip round the ear and he probalby deserved it to be fair.
Hopefully thats where it will be left.
If McArthur deserved a clip round the ear for that misplaced pass then Boyce deserved one for getting turned so easily in the build up to their 1st!!!
In fact I’d bet that McArthur said something pretty similar to Boyce when he was getting the verbals & Boyce didn’t take to that too kindly.
The spat wasn’t great to see but it’s not somet I’m worrying about – Steve Bruce & Peter Schmeichel used to be at each others throats every week at United
The disappointing thing for me about the incident was the bit that I seem to recall (some of them ales at the beer festival were mighty strong!!) MOTD showing where after the misplaced pass, Boyce chases back for about 5 yards before taking his eye off play & virtually stopping in order to give McArthur verbals whilst Liverpool are tearing forward into Latics penalty area. Players misplacing passes I can handle but Boyce neglecting his defensive duties just to have a go at someone whilst play is still progressing was very poor on his parttoo many players know the games up and are lining up to jump ship and its upsetting the players that have the heart for the fight
but what do i know :blink:That’s always a possibility but i doubt either Boyce or McArthur are lining up to jump ship (in fact I would struggle to think of 2 players less likel to jump ship) so even if they’re pished off with players who may be I doubt they’d take their frustrations ou on each other
A man who went to the football league who wanted to throw us out of the league because of the state of the ground begging to give us another season and won a reprieve.I agree with the general thrust of your post but I don’t remember that. I remember Kidderminster kicking up a stink when they were refused entry to the football league due to ground requirements & they pointed out that neither Latics nor Barnet had the required amount of seating but they weren’t thrown out of the league. That must have been in about 1994 or thereabouts
From memory not a lot was done to Springfield Park between then & 1999 or did the FL just want to see evidence that our new place was being built?Absolutely pathetic decision.Sending a league 2 player off in a major final when 3-0 down is a disgrace. Whatever happened to common sense? There are some incidents during a game where a ref can apply common sense & not strictly apply the letter of the law. There are other instances where they can’t. This fell into the 2nd category.
It was as obvious an example of denying a goal scoring opportunity as you are likely to see. Imagine if the ref had thought “aww it’s 3-0 & he’s played really well to help get em here. I won’t send him off”. Then Matt Duke goes on to save the penalty, it inspires a Bradford fight back & they clawback the game
Not sure that the ref would have been able to sell the “it just felt a bit tight to send him off” argument to Michael LaudrupIt was a tongue in cheek remark ABL in response to Griff’s tongue in cheek remark that Bruce’s team played long ball stuff. It’s as incorrect as those who accuse Bobby’s style of being boring when the truth is that when it works & works well any style of football is entertaining
For the record I’ve never fallen asleep at any game but there was a kid in front of me at deepdale once who was fast asleep all through Stuart barlow’s hat-trick there!!!There’s a “real ale” lager I’ve bought when I’ve been in Aberystwyth over the last couple of years called “Ewes Frolic” which I like – it’s brewed by Penlon Cottage Brewery & I think they only sell it at local markets & organic shops as I can’t find it anywhere else even online. They do other ales & stouts too but I haven’t tried any of them
There is also somet I bought a few years back in a real ale/whisky shop in Stamford Bridge (the 1066 one & not chelsea’s ground) called Fraoch which is a traditional Scottish Heather ales. Sounds minging but it’s reet nice & I’ve started to see it in a few supermarkets & have been able to supp it again
I bought another one that day though called Skullsplitter which was in a small bottle. It was very aptly named coz I could feel a hangover kicking in as I was suppin it (apparently it’s named after some Viking warrior who had a base on the OrkneysThe lager in Prague is quality stuff & they take a real pride in it & in letting you know all about it on the menu’s in bars with info about the altitude (or what I think was altitude) etc.. it’s brewed at – not that I had a feckin clue what that all meant but I’m led to believe it does make a difference to the taste
He’ll sh*t on them at some point.
Once he’s spent all their money.
In amongst all this Bruce love-in that’s going on, people have realised that they’re only in the Championship, right?
I suspect you said the first line to get a rise out of somebody so I’ll bite ;)
Steve Bruce spent money at Wigan Athletic that Dave Whelan said he could spend. Nothing more. The reason Bobby operates on a much lower budget isn’t the fault of Steve Bruce but because Dave Whelan decided to change it
I never said it was his fault. But, he also decided to leave because he didn’t want to operate under those constraints.
It is his fault that I had a crick in my neck for 18 months – but I know you won’t agree with that, either. ;)
In other news, local doctors are baffled by the increase in narcolepsy amongst Wiganers since June 2009 ;)
thats arsenal. ……8 seasons won nothing. Dominated again today but its not how long you play keepy ball it’s what you do with it when you have it……Please, please take heed Robbie. !!!!
Yes Roberto, start lumping it up in the air at every given opportunity like Stoke, because that’s just guaranteed to work.
Are there only 2 ways to play football? ;)

The reason Bobby operates on a much lower budget isn’t the fault of Steve Bruce but because Dave Whelan decided to change itI’ve always sang that Adams family sing with the line “they’re big & fat & smelly.” If it isn’t that’s the one I’ve taught my daughters anyway
On the subject of atmospheres at Welsh grounds, back when I was a student my uni rugby league team got free tickets for a Wales v Samoa rl World Cup game at the vetch field (we’d played Swansea uni earlier in the day). The place was packed & when they sang “bread of heaven” properly and in tune & not like we normally yell football chants, it really did make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end
PS Apologies for admitting to both playing & watching rugby league
I was talking about (if Latics got there) whether I’d go to both the semi & the final at Wembley.
2 trips down to London, plus the transport, plus food & drink + a stopover (which would be a deffo for the final) in little over a month would probably stretch my bank balance a tad & I’m not sure i could do it.
But I’d be gutted if I didn’t go & Latics lost
I might have to sell a kidney or sometOn the subject of the semi’s being played at Wembley, I don’t agree with it not on any only the final should be at Wembley principle but on the costs for the fans involved.
If say for example it was a Latics v Everton semi, to force both sets of fans on a 500+ mile round trip in the knowledge that one lot of em will have to repeat the trip 4 weeks later is a disgrace, especially when there’s a 77,000 capacity stadium a short train ride away -
