Sorry but I have to completely disagree.

This 3-4-2-1 or whatever you wanna call it system played with the players we have has Latcis looking much stronger defensive & goign forward than we have done in a long time.
Take it away & you go back to the sometime shambolic centre half pairing of Caldwell & Alcaraz & put Figueroa back at left back where he’d barely played well in the last couple of seasons.
Going forward Latics seem to be creating far more chances & to change this system woudl take that away & go back to the system which was looking so poor & devoid of creativity earlier in the season.

The simple fact is that Latics are much stronger playing the current system. If you change it all about because of Valencia it takes that strength away – i think Latics would be far more likely to get a(nother) 4 or 5-0 hammering
No offence I just fail to see how changing a system that has brought only 1 defeat in the last 8 games would make Latics more likely to get a result

Girl said the phone has been ringing off with the Salford scrags trying allsorts.

The clue of where United are based is in the name of the ground!! ;)

in reply to: Man Utd #84580

The players have got used to playing this system now, appear very comfortable with it & they all appear to know their roles within it so I think it would be suicide to start messing around with it now.

With regards to Beausejour’s lack of defensive experience, if either wing back gets caught out when pushed up then the idea is that the “spare” centre half covers.

I’m a great believer that a manager should play their strongest line up regardless of who the opposition is. When you start taking away your own strengths to focus on those of the opposition then you are starting to play with fire

The only downside of the current formation is that Latics still do not have anyone suited to playing the strikers role – or rather we only have 1 (Sammon) & he isn’t good enough for this level from the more I see of him

All the refs nowadays are a bit pally with the big players and this is obviously effecting their decisions e.g. blatant elbow on McCarthy…

I honestly wouldnt reccomend getting on the guys back though he seriously seems the type that it would spur him on just to stick the boot in more…

But all in all I am with you the guy is an idiot.

I don’t think that there was any anti-Latics or pro-United bias with that Rooney/McCarthy incident last season.
Whoever the ref was just got the whole situation completely wrong coz I don’t think he saw what happened (from start to finish), saw somet out of the corner of his eye & assumed something had happened & that’s where the problem comes about
The original offence was committed by McCarthy & hence why Rooney reacted. If the ref had seen it he would have awarded a free kick to United & then sent Rooney off for his reaction but he didn’t – he just saw something in his peripheral vision & assumed what he had seen & gave a free kick to Latics.
What happened after the game with him saying he saw the whole incident & dealt with it correctly is him trying to cover his own back. He’ll lose less assessment marks by “missing something” (you can’t see everything) than he would by admitting he gave a decision by assuming something had happpened

As for Dowd – from his view on the pitch I can see why he sent Sammon off. Sammon led with his elbow & from Dowd’s view (as oppsed to the TV one or even the one in the stands) that movement can look like a swing. He actually deserves credit for admitting he got it wrong coz many of them wouldn’t (see above).
I actually think as well that apart from that mistake he has on the whole reffed Latics games well since Jewell left
Ask me next Thursday & I may have a different opinion!!!!

in reply to: Run In Predictions #84546

i used that BBC predictor thingy & thought I was being quite pessimistic/realistic with Latics results with only 1 more win between now & the end of the season:
    Chelsea – Lose
    United – Lose
    Arsenal – Lose
    Fulham – draw
    Newcastle – Draw
    Blackburn – Draw
    Wolves – win

However I must have been even more pessimistic about the chances of some of the other teams coz that points haul would be keeping us up with 34 points & in 16th position with Wolves (23 points), QPR (30) & Bolton (32) going down with Blackburn staying up on goal difference

Nevermind all that tat – what did he say about my cat & is he going to send him a signed photo or owt?

in reply to: Martinez meet and greet #84260

Ask him if he feels honoured to find out that Tyldesley Latic continued a long family tradition in naming my pet after a footballer & has a cat named after him (Bobby).

Although If I’d got him a week later he’d have been named Bomber in honour of Neil Roberts Worthington Cup winner against $h!tty

What exactly is their job ? Barcelona just denied a stone wall penalty not 10 feet in front of said official ??? The other thing I have never understood is why does a player have to actually hit the deck to be awarded a penalty ? Sanchez was clearly fouled prior to being decked by the keeper but because he didn’t fall to the ground no instant decision for a penalty ? Free kicks are awarded for infringements that don’t see a player hitting the deck and so why is this not the case in the box ? How many times do you hear pundits saying ” If he hadn’t decided to stay on his feet and go for goal it would have been a certain penalty ” ?

I think they’re there purely to say whether the ball goes in or out of play (or over the line for a goal) & not to come in on any other decision.
If that is the case then it’s a complete waste of money as the assistant is supposed to follow the ball all the way down to the line anyway & to be honest the number of controversial “ball over the line” goals is minimal.
If they aren’t there to assist in instances like last night it seems pointless when its obvious they were fouled, the “normal” officials couldn’t tell & the other one is there staring straight at it & not able to say owt.

On the penalties themselves you are told to play advantage as much as possible & so if the player doesn’t go down you are supposed to let play go on & see if they get a shot in at goal or get control of the ball. If they do & then feck it up you can’t then bring play back – in that instance last night, if the ref doesn’t think he was fouled for the second challenge he must think it was the players own error in knocking the bal too far past the keeper.
In my reffing I let a player a few months ago who got fouled near the edge of the penalty area get his shot in (which he skied) before pulling play back for a free-kick. I got docked marks on my assessment for it.
I also remember a 4 (or 5-1) win away at Preston when Barlow got a hat-trick. At 1-0 down & getting battered Barlow got put clean through & the keeper clipped him as he took it round him. Barlow kept his feet, got a shot in & missed. The ref then pulled play back, awarded a penalty, sent the keeper of and Barlow scored the penalty – Preston’s manager was none too happy coz he said an advantage was played, Latics messed it up themselves & then the ref has given another advantage by awarding the pen & sending the keeper off. The manager was reet

You’re not a new fan by any chance are you?

Lets put it this way I am looking forward to playing Southampton in the league next season, the ONLY team WAFC have NEVER played in the league !! ;)
PS Now if we beat Utd that WILL be special !! Liverpool are poor these days so the win in a way pales into insignificance. Would the reaction still be the same if this milestone came in The Championship ? Like I said it makes us look like we are still a lower league team which incidentally we are NOT ! ;)[/quote]

As far as I’m aware Latics have never played in the league (as in the football or premier league) against Morecamble, AFC Wimbledon, Crawley, Yeovil, Dagenham & Redbridge, Stevenage, Sheffield Wednesday, (the reformed) Aldershot, Accrington or Burton Albion.
As well as Southampton of course ;)

not to mention the amount city shirts you see about Salford now …

Ya never heard a peep ten years ago and now they are all crawling out of the woodwork.

I hope America steals all the owners oil they go bust flatten the stadium and outlaw any mention of Manchester Shitty from that day forward by penalty of death.

Until that day they can stick it up their arse!

    beautifully put salfordlatic!!!!!

As for them crawling out of the woodwork – back when they were in the 3rd div (98/99 was it?) I used to work in Salford Quays & there were a good few City fans working there. Most of em were arrogant, gobby gits but the odd one was okay.
Anyway, one day one of the okay ones went out in his lunch break to salford crescent to try & but the new city shirt from a sports shop. He couldn’t find one & so asked the owner. The response he got was:
“You’re f****n joking aren’t you. This is Salford. You’re in the wrong city if you wanna buy that S**t”

It kept me amused for the rest of the day anyway!!

Aside from their fans Joe Royle & his assistant were absolute a**es that season too. Comments like “we expect to be beating teams like Wigan” have always stuck in my mind
And don’t get me started on Goater & both of those play off games – should have had a penalty in the home game when Weikens handled right in front of the linesman. Should have had a penalty in the 2nd leg when Weikens booted Kevin Sharp about 6 foot in the air when the ball had long gone past him & the “handball” – a mate of mine works at City & helped out Goater with his charity. Still won’t say if it came off his arm which to me indicates it did. barsteward!!
Mind you can’t just blame that for us going out coz Graeme Jones probably still has nightmares about the header he smacked against the bar from about 2 yards out late on

in reply to: Why Did Bob Have To Go And Say That !! #84172

I see where you’re coming from filmoss but at the same time I can also see where Bobby is coming from too.

I know Latics have scalped some of the big uns in the past & I know in the here & now Liverpool aren’t the giants they once were & are only a few points in front of say Swansea BUT at the same time when you have a website like the BBC which in its match preview specifically highlighted the fact that during the season 20 odd years ago Latics drew the future league champions Liverpool in the League cup, had to play both legs at Anfield & got mullered 8-2 on aggregate (despite putting up a valiant show for the first hour) then it is both a significant milestone for the club & an indicator that (for all us darksiders may bitch & moan) the steps that this club has made over that period are huge

Obviously its also an indicator of the fact that Liverpool are no longer the powerhouses they once were.
Having relatives who are Mousers & working with loads of em, for me it is a moment I’ll savour & I’ll admit it did feel different (possibly better even) than beating say Fulham

in reply to: Man Utd or City ? #84171

United – being born & raised a red means old habits die hard. As blue & white as I have been for the last 20 odd years, if Latics can’t win a competition then the only other team I would like to see win it are United.

Besides which I think many Latcis fans who experienced City at first hand when they were down in the 3rd div with us for that season realises what a bunch of absolute c***s they really are

in reply to: Budget 2012 #83894
I don’t see how you come to that conclusion. The income tax threshold change makes people £220 better off in cash terms. That apparently equates to £170 per year in ‘real terms’ for somebody on the basic rate of tax. Even if it did equate to nothing or next to nothing in real terms as I think you are argueing, I would not consider that to be a tragedy considering the state the country is in. I’m surprised I’m getting anything out of this budget if I am honest.

So basically I am £18.33 a month better off when I receive my salary & I should be thankful for it?
It’s a mutha suckin drop in the ocean back considering the 2.5% increase in VAT a budget or so back means I’m far worse off “in real terms” than I was
Add that to my pay freeze, the school i work at having its budget stripped bare then I’m so glad that Mr Osbourne saw fit to reduce the top rate of tax by 5% coz those in that bracket must have really been struggling – or are we returning to the “trickle down economics” although I prefer to call it fighting for the crumbs that fall off the rich man’s table?
