Stacks of empty seats and less than 65000 there.
Maybe with us playing at home fans who follow both clubs opted to stay in Wigan and go to the DW.
It certainly didn’t make any difference to our official attendance. With less than 2000 away fans the gate was up from the Bury match who brought around 1200. Yes we had slightly less home fans there today but this is probably down to the pay on the day price which was incidentally more expensive than many Wembley tickets today. I

Nothing to do with the national rail system being on lockdown all weekend is it?

How many coaches do you think there were available in Wigan. To take the mickey out of 60 odd thousand is a bit rich when you had a conference attendance. Turning Blue :silly: :silly: :silly: Ask yourself where the other thousands of fans were today :P ;) Portsmouth brought 3,000 so that leaves 6,000 home fans and you can subtract the guaranteed attendance figures from season ticket holders so how many were really there? 4000? MASSIVE support.

Solution is simple all the major European leagues kick off within a couple of weeks of each other so make the deadline July 31 before anyone kicks off. Not rocket science if all player contracts end at the previous seasons close instead of July.

That is the only logical was a window could work. If it was implemented throughout Europe. That isn’t going to happen though. Not unless the F.A are planning to take the idea to UEFA do it will just be English clubs. Its good for every league beneath the Premiership because how many Premier League sides want to raid lower league clubs in the window? None. It’s all imports. The main danger to League 1 is the Championship scoffing the best available players from the league below. The major, major problem if this proposal is met is that the Coutinho saga etc will continue. It won’t stop the foreign sides like Barca and Real Madrid from hounding the Premiership, unsettling players until their window shuts. I like the idea, it’s a breath of fresh air. Unless teams like Juventus decide to start raiding the likes of Bristol City i would assume the leagues below the Premiership would be pretty much left alone. I think it’s great watching the likes of Liverpool moaning abd saying it’s not fair because a PROPER big club wants one of their players. Not ok any more is it when the shoe is on the other foot. Bring it on i say. I bet you any money about 15 clubs in the top league reject the idea but about 95% of football league sides agree to it. The majority vote will win and the little people have a second victory in as many years.

I would ditch the Champions League and Europa League also. UEFA must be able to see the Europa League isnt working.

I would bring back the European Cup and UEFA Cup and have the teams drawn comletely at random. None of this seeding crap to maximise revenue and guarantee a ‘Big’ final. A straight draw to play each other in 2 legged straight knockout games until the final.

In my opinion the Football League/Checkatrade Trophy should be scrapped without question.

As much as I enjoyed watching us win it in 1999, its always been a competition that has attracted low attendances until the regional 2 legged finals (or even the final if it’s Latics) but putting the U23 sides from the top 2 divisions in as some kind of sop to them in order to put down the calls for B sides in professional football, it has just killed it stone dead.

2 seasons ago I really wanted Latics to win it & was gutted when we got beat by Barnsley. Now I really couldn;t give 2 hoots about it & seeing my club have to face up against Middlesbrough U23’s 4 years after we won the FA Cup is just a further reminder of how far we have fallen in that time & holds no appeal to me.

The League Cup I would keep, however ultimately we have to realise that most club’s concern if to climb as high up the league as possible.
Take our game last night – Villa need to get back in the top flight before their parachute payments halve & to make them a more attractive opposition to potential buyers. Latics need to get out of League 1 for the long term good of the club. Neither of those club’s is going to risk injuries or suspensions to any player that may harm those goals of promotion.
There are various things that would make it a more attractive opposition but the main two I guess would be to offer more prize money for winning each tie & a Champions League spot for the winner. The PL will never agree to the latter & I guess the FL is hamstrung by how much cash it can afford to pay out in order for the former to be a goer

I like the last bit. Imagine if they offered a Champions League spot for the winners of both domestic cups and the top 2 in the league. There would be many a bricks being shit in Manchester, Merseyside and London. It would actually be hilarious because of all the billions spent between them but on the serious side it would make the Premiership a lot more interesting as it would then be 3rd and 4th for the Europa League and everybody else lucks out so that means big clubs miss out on Europe. I am all for it and it would certainly add more glamour to the cup competitions. Say a team like Man City were struggling in 5th place but were still in the League Cup. You wouldn’t see any reserves then.

in reply to: Safe Standing Debate #161406

I remember the buzz of Latics moving to an all-seater stafium. Funny how the gloss tarnishes over time. It’s a bit like the journey to the Premier League. Sure everybody wanted to be there but once you are actually there is ‘much a do’ about nothing. You can’t compete for the league.

in reply to: Safe Standing Debate #161375

I have swung it to 5-4 on the against side. I like the nostalgia of the idea and fondly remember standing in the ground with groups of people you have never met before but end up having the banter etc. The smell of cigar smoke from the old chaps wafting up the stand etc but i think the game is just too advanced for it now. I have no issue with the Hillsborough thing, that was just badly policed. I have been to probably about half the grounds in the uk and never seen a ‘crush’ problem. That isn’t an issue. In standing areas it’s easier to throw missiles and go undetected. It’s easier to hide flares, alcohol, cigs etc. I have no objections with cigs and alcohol. I would be more in favour of having a smoking section to be honest in stadiums or adopt the Huddersfield/Barnsley stance on it. Huddersfield let you smoke outside the stand and Barnsley have a big cage on the away end where the smokers can go. Alcohol will never be allowed in stands again though because of cock boxes like Millwall fans. I think people have got used to seating now provided there is leg room and to be fair the DW is pretty generous for leg room. Anfield is a joke though, you have about 7 inches to the seat in front of you. I could see it potentially working at grounds like that where they have just crammed as many seats in as possible and made it terribly uncomfortable for folk. In situations like that you could could get more fans in and have more room for them without the seats there but other than for nostalgic reasons, i can’t see why it would/should happen.

The point was loyalty. Not glory hunting when things are going well and as the Latics fans love to ridicule the Warriors on here i thought i would bring you back to reality.

in reply to: Positives …Negatives #161121

first 5 positives;

Winning 2-1
Josh Laurent’s debut goal and good all round performance
Donervan Daniels, finally getting some game time and looking quite solid
The performances of Colclough, Merrie, Thomas, Gilby and James
The state of the pitch [although why did they have to water the fooker]

Now 5 Negatives;

The poor defending of set pieces [all night]
Giving away a scrappy goal
The queues at the tuck shop despite a gate of only 3,391 albeit all of um being in one stand.

I can only think of 3. :cheer:

Shocking from the Latics (un)faithful. Glad we don’t get crowds like that on at the rugby. Not even in the lean years where it actually went up circa 2005.
That figure was still more than watched the egg clodding world cup final globally.

And check your history about attendances and get your facts right.
The rugby league world cup was watched by 18.8 million viewers just in England, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand alone.

Wigan Warriors average attendance 2004 – after finishing 4th – 12649
Wigan Warriors average attendance 2005 – after finishing 7th – 13891
Wigan Warriors average attendance 2006 – after finishing 8th – 14445
Wigan Warriors average attendance 2007 – after finishing 6th – 16039

FACTS!

Latics attendances have dropped from (2006) 20,000 to 9,000 and will be considerably lower again this season.

FACTS!

in reply to: Anyone for season prediction #161011

Bottom half of mid table (if you get me, 11th-14th ish)

I predict a very hit and miss season. Good wins followed up by poor defeats. Then the season after either teetering with or dropping down.

in reply to: Bogle Transfer Listed #160731

Bit strange that both players fall out with the manager on the same day. There is more to this than the club are letting on. I would guess that Cook is a bit of a shit stirrer. Selling these two won’t do Latics any good anyway because it won’t be re-invested so how much they go for is irrelevant.

in reply to: Max Power #160690

Wigan Athletic are an enigma. Every year they rip the soul out and expect spectators to pay for to watch it and then say “It’s ok Latics i still love you no matter how badly you are treating me”

Its like your wife having an affair every year and saying “i forgive you as long as you don’t do it again”

in reply to: Max Power #160688

Wigan Athletic selling their only assets and replacing them with mid 30’s year old free transfers…… Are any of you truly shocked? I am guessing all the hysteria of a promotion push is now ebbing away with the annual closing down sale process starting a little later this year.

As soon as we kick the fat bar stewards out the better.

Can’t though can you? because it isnt your stadium unfortunately and unless you get back to the championship pronto, you had better get used to switching games for the Rugby ;)
