I remember a tale about bonding told to me by a Hindley fella called Bill Robinson, Well Bill was a good Rugby player in his day, played for Wigan and the GB national side.

Bill played in a test series against the Australians and in the first two tests GB were well and truly battered, the GB team just had no team spirit at all.

The evening before the third test, the team were gathered together told that the series was lost, each player was then given £5 and told to go out and enjoy themselves. As Bill said it was a lot of money in those days and so the squad set out for an evening around Wigan to do a bit of team bonding.

Come the day of the game the GB were all were nursing hangovers having over indulged but as Bill said they’d had the time of their lives.

In Bills words “we battered um, two of the Aussies were taken of before half time suffering from concussion, we were hungover but up for it”

It’s over 30 years ago I was told that tale, Bill is now probably long gone but I enjoyed listening to his tale. Anyway maybe a bit of bonding can do wonders.

Yeah i want to chip in here too and put my point forward as to why a bonding session is a good idea. A lot of players being vocally bagged and boo’d in the stands last season. Like Snowblind i would like to tell a little story i have. I have a friend who is a professional Rugby League player (Super League and well known) A couple of years ago the team he plays for were very thin on the ground and struggling for players. My mate put his hand up and said he would play even though he had been stood down. Why had he been stood down? His mother was gravely ill in hospital. He had a bad game and was abused something rotten from the stands “you lazy, fat c*nt” etc etc and he heard all this. No fan knew about his personal situation and when he should have really been applauded for giving it a go he was hammered by the fans on the day. After the match he went straight to the hospital and his mother died soon after on the same day. He decided then and there that he wanted to leave that club at the end of the season because what he had heard that day. Yes he had a bad game but he tried as hard as he could. He moved on and regained his form and is doing nicely now again.

The moral of the story is :- All the fans see are players on good wages ‘not pulling their weight’ but rather than shout abuse at them, there maybe more to it. Bonding sessions are a good idea for a healthy mind.

Why do you lot post on vital under different names than here?

Seems all the bellends that post on vital are the same bellends as on here.

These new dickheads running vital will ruin it,time everyone upsticks and stopped on ere.

Cockney Latic was always the best forum. It has outlasted every other and the pretenders that have been and gone since. Pity the influential posters like MickyC and Griff disappeared. Although they were good to banter with and argue with, they certainly put a good point across. I would say the same for Standish but i don’t wanna boost his ego ;) ;) I have never posted on any other one although i do read Vital too. I must admit though, there are quite a few spleens over there. Late teens early 20’s. You can see it a mile off.

Is this a serious conversation? The man who turned ‘Super Club’ Leeds into top division challengers would be interested in this job. Get your thinking caps on. He has obviously been touted up for the Palace job. I have told you the best man for the job… If you would like to troll through my posts from the last 5 years i am sure i can appease many of you. Wigan Athletic was a brilliant business plan. Nearly a hundred years of history and building aqll squandered to line the pockets of the owner. You will see it one day

Inverness are probably the same standard wise as any other League One side if not a bit better and so yes he would do well for us!

I don’t think they are even decent League One standard Phil.

They’ve got players from Carlisle and Wimbledon playing for them, and one lad on loan from Crawley.

Other SPL teams have players they signed from Hartlepool, Whitley Bay, and Nuneaton etc.

Bar Celtic who are streets ahead of the others and Aberdeen and Rangers who are mid-to-lower end Championship standard at best, I’d put them at lower League One / League Two standard.

I remember Scott Vernon being sent on loan to Southend because he couldn’t get a game for Colchester, then the season after he was playing for Aberdeen and was third top scorer in the SPL.
Have to agree, the Scottish leagues are terrible. The pyramids are and have been littered with failed English lower league players who have flourished up there. Even at Celtic and Rangers they have had umpteen players who have become ‘world beaters’ Just having a flick through the top scorer charts for the last 10 years

2007. Scott McDonald – Failed at Middlesborough and Millwall – Signed from Southampton reserves
2008 – Kris Boyd – Failed at Middlesborough
2009- Boyd again followed by Anthony Stokes – Failed at Multiple English league clubs
2010 – Kenny Miller – Failed at Multiple English league clubs
2011 – Gary Hooper – Signed from Scunthorpe – Failed at Norwich and currently struggling to get into a Sheff Wed side
2012 – Michael Higdon – Signed from Crewe, Failed at Sheff Utd, Oldham and Tranmere. Currently playing for Bangor City
2013 – Chris Commons – Decent enough at Championship level but a winger scoring 27 league goals???
2014 – Adam Rooney, Failed at Birmingham, Swindon and Oldham. Now back in Scotland with Aberdeen banging them in.
2015 – Leigh Griffiths – Actually decent scoring record for Wolves but only played 26 games
2016 – Currently Scott Sinclair, Would thrive at Championship level and maybe bottom half of Premier League but career littered with failed big money moves.

Huddersfield have worked their arse off all season to get where they are. David Wagner has signed a SQUAD of players he deems good enough. He can play whoever he wants, whenever he wants. Just like the big clubs do for European ties etc. Sour grapes from Blackburn. If they didn’t wanna go down then they should not have done things the cheap way like the other 2 sides that have been relegated with them. Cheap option managers and bargain basement signings. Get what they deserve.

Nathan Jones nailed on!

What’s his links to wigan though, as Lostock said he had some links?
If you know it just say it and stop fucking around. ‘I knoooow something you don’t knoooow’ GAY. just say it!

Why is it everybody outside of how a football club is run can tell when they sign a player or appoint a manager that i would say 90% of the time is going to fail. If i was Sharpe and on a very low budget for a manager and had to make a choice and take a chance. I don’t see why Cowley and co at Lincoln would be such a terrible move as a ‘chance’ but at this point in the actual history of Wigan Athletic this is one of the most crucial decisions in a long time. It HAS to be right first time. If there isn’t a promotion next season then all my predictions come true. There CAN NOT be a chance taken this time. It HAS to be proven this time. Somebody who will have them in the top 6. There aren’t many around out of work but they are there if you look hard enough. It depends on the ambition of the owners and board. But you know my views on that already. I have not made any secret of the fact that i have fallen completely out of love with football and i don’t take much notice anymore, however i still look out for the latics’ results. I spent a big part of my life following this team around the country and do not want them to go to the wall. However that is where they are heading. And i suppose the next appointment will give you an indication of the ambition of where they are wanted to be. The fact that some fans just accept the statements like ‘ah well we punched above our weight anyway’ is completely defeatest. Premiership for 8 years. F.A Cup winners, League Cup finalists, European entrants. That isn’t punching above any weight. That is going toe to toe with the very best. Why accept failure after that? Some fans need a sense of perspective. That perspective isn’t punching above any weight but lack of ambition and shutting up shop when the club was in a great position to be a consolidated top flight side.

Some great responses here. Dismissing Keane out of hand and trying to promote Pearson instead. Making out he is some kind of angel in comparison. Is this the same Pearson who grabbed James McCarthur around the throat. The same Pearson who verbally insults reporters. The same Pearson who offers his own fans out and tells them to ‘fuck off’. The same Pearson who split the Leicester board room with his slanging matches. Yeah good choice. A choir boy.

There is only one man to take the helm. Only one man could possibly begin to sort out the HUGE mess that has been left now. Wigan Athletic can’t buy their way up next season so the players that are there and will be coming in need motivation. A man who isn’t afraid of what people think or try and dictate to him. That man is Roy Keane. There shouldn’t even be any other name in the frame. If The Latics want to survive then Keane needs appointing and given longevity.

You’ve a good point there Yosser…Roy Keane would be an excellent choice. We can but hope.

Back to reality, we’ve more chance of getting his namesake Steve, whose tactical prowess makes Yootha Joyce look like Bill Shankly.
After reading his autobiography, he doesn’t seem too bothered about what league he is in as long as he is challenged. There is no bigger challenge around at the moment in terms of potential, stadium and facilities etc its all there if somebody can get them back up. A couple of things he alludes to in his book are how he has turned down big money moves in terms of playing and management because of 1. The challenge wasn’t enough and 2. He couldn’t uproot his family from Manchester so when he was in the Sunderland job he struggled to adapt because he was so far away from home and his family. He wasn’t concerned about his salary but was more interested in an incentive bonus. 1m quid for promotion. Thats what drives him on. The challenge to be successful. He is out of club management and could continue in his role with Ireland and he is 20 mins away. I think he would jump at the chance. I very much doubt the club have the balls to make such an appointment though. A born winner.
So this is the same Keane who has a caustic personality, who could start an argument in an empty room, who fell out with entire Irish coaching staff, caused all the Sunderland players to celebrate when he resigned as manager, and was an abject failure and eventually sacked as Ipswich manager?

Oh, and he once kicked up a fuss and wrote about it in his newspaper column when one of the girls at the DW ticket office didn’t recognise him and wouldn’t sell him a ticket?

Yep. Perfect for the job!
There are two sides to every story and sometimes some stories are complete bullshit to start with. I would recommend anyone to read his book. ‘The Second Half’ He unearthes a lot of the stories that have dogged him throughout his career. Strikes me as a very honest man, probably too honest. Your perspective of him might just change. Apart from that, it’s a riveting read anyway.

You all know the answer to the question you just cant admit it to yourselves. It was worth risking the club though for 8 years in the Premier League wasn’t it? In a few years time when you are all down at Victory Park cheering the mighty Chorley on, you can all visit his statue and thank him for not having a football team in Wigan any more. Was all in the plan. £££££££ give me your assets because the people in Wigan love to keep giving me money. Baaah baah

in reply to: Sharpe On Radio Today #156986
Why are you so shocked? Since relegation from the Prem its all been about cheap options. End of the day there is a kid now running the club, second and third generation are rarely as good as first in business.

Every dog has its day and we’ve had ours. If somebody had said to you twelve years ago you will have eight years in the prem, beat all the top sides, play United in a EFL cup final, beat City in the FA Cup final and play in Europe but end up back where we came from you would have all taken it!

But why accept that? Dave Whelan came in and promised to progress the club not ruin it. Why not strive for more? Because unfortunately that was never the intention for the owners. It was always money first and anything else was a bonus. Now these people are martyrs and will leave the club probably out of business so what is better, having a lower league club doing ok or having a once fairly successful club that no longer exists? The men who created Wigan Athletic in the 1930’s (i think) after years of failed teams would have wanted a town team that could have competed at league level not be a pawn for one man’s millions idea to extract as much out the team and people of the town as he could and then destroy everything it ever stood for. It’s easy to be blinded by recent success but is it worth throwing nearly a hundred years away for. No me neither.

in reply to: Sharpe On Radio Today #156985

I said all this would happen about 5 years ago. I am not going to go into the Whelan family bashing etc etc but you all know my stance on that anyway. The only way Wigan Athletic can get out of this is by appointing a personality whether it be in the championship or league one. There is only one man that can drag the best out of or get rid of the weak player. Step forward Roy Keane. It won’t happen though, Sharpe, like his granddad will always go for the cheap option and hope for the best so he can pocket more cash. Beware Latics fans, Barrow WILL be permanent manager next season.

I sense some real anger here. As its a completely different sport, mainly followed by people who do not like football, I don’t understand why you’d hate it as much as, say football fans born and bred in Wigan who support other clubs, or football fans born and bred in Wigan who play in local leagues on a Saturday afternoon.

Do you hate followers of any other sport, or is it just rugby?

Personally, I cant stand Formula 1, and tennis but I don’t hate it so much as to wish ill on those who do like those sports. In fact, I voted for Andy Murray for Sports Personality of the Year, as he’s bloody good at what he does. But I wouldn’t watch him play.

It’s pure jealousy Pie Army, don’t let them blind you with the Maurice Lindsay episode, they have been churning that one out since the 80’s. Now i am going to run along like a little boy, i have a game to get to.
