I think, mutty (and I am no expert in this I will admit) that the difference we have is that Dave Whelan converted a significant chunk of the debt into equity, rather than just a charge on the balance sheet.
By doing this the debt varies as the share price varies and if the club is in tight financial position (as we are – but that is different to being broke) then the share price drops and hence the amount the club “owes” is reduced. I am not sure even that this no longer becomes a “debt” as such, but just what he will get back for the club.
So in essence, Whelan is still screwing the club a year after leaving it and without a peep about ‘the club he loves’ since?
Love off! i told you all years ago what his game was. Little David will have been advised accordingly. Uncle Dave can’t be seen to just give him 10m quid or so. He needs to learn the business. Needs to learn how to screw businesses over legitimately and still walk away with a fat wedge to start his entrepreneurial career. Just like Granddad. Unfortunately for Latics, They are the test pilot. Conference in 4 years with no DW to play in. I will stick by it.
Sharpe has come in, got rid of everybody on a half decent wage and got players on the cheap (with the exception of Grigg) doees this pattern of circumstances not remind you of anything? Whelan, Martinez, this love in and accepting everything that is thrown at you. YOU are the consumer, you pay the prices and you should demand more instead of having your hard earned cash yanked out of your pocket.
I don’t know about having money yanked out of your pocket I was under the impression that it is up to the individual if he wants to buy a season ticket or match day ticket come to that and I also reckon the cost cutting was needed
Funny isn’t it, these similarities keep cropping up. Mr. Sharpe takes over Wigan Athleitc just before they get relegated. He takes the last 10m of parachute payments, he sells every player in the squad, he brings in cheap alternatives…… Need i go on
We do have one more parachute payment has it is over four years then adding up and taking away wasn’t one of your best skills
And people say i am deluded
well yes and course they have a point with your consistent financial analysis
Thats because i’m right though. People fear truth sometimes and when it comes to Latics it is so clear to see. If the chairman murdered somebody in the street there would still be a little posse on here defending him. Get your head out of the clouds.
We weren’t shite. That’s a kneejerk reaction from a lot of our “supporters”. I was as annoyed as many, but have had time to reflect, and have taken that time to do so.
We certainly weren’t very good, and played like what we are (is that grammatical?) – a team of eleven players who haven’t played together competively before.
We tried to play tiki-taka and build from the back but got it wrong because (a) we have League One players not Barcelona superstars, and (b) the players don’t know each other so don’t know where others are going to be or where they are going to pass the ball.
Maybe we should have set out to be more direct until we can start playing fancy stuff. A couple of times we got caught in defence when we should just have played League One “hoof it”.
People who are saying we are shite also are not giving Coventry credit. They read our game well, closed us down very quickly, and broke quickly themselves while finding space.
Come on George, we all know your an avid football fan but it’s time you stopped defending the club on everything. Yesterday they WERE shite, it was like watching a Martinez team, Sharpe has come in, got rid of everybody on a half decent wage and got players on the cheap (with the exception of Grigg) doees this pattern of circumstances not remind you of anything? Whelan, Martinez, this love in and accepting everything that is thrown at you. YOU are the consumer, you pay the prices and you should demand more instead of having your hard earned cash yanked out of your pocket.

And people say i am deluded for thinking Whelan and co are only in it for the money. I am yet to be proved wrong. Latics to be playing at Leigh Sports Village within 5 years. I am pretty good with predictions. Regarding Latics, Every single one of them has been correct so far. Feel free to troll through my old posts.
To be fair though Garswood, When he was a player he was ‘Calamity Caldwell’ as he was piss poor as a CB but i think he has the right tools to make it as a manager. He has (seemingly) got all the right bases covered to be a successful one. Crap as a player, shouts a lot and Scottish. That’s all you need these days apparently. I do though, however think he has a good brain but reading the forums it seems as though he is following the ‘Martinez Style’ of passing it about a lot with no substance. Time will tell though i suppose and i haven’t seem them play yet so i can’t pass judgement for now.
When you say “piss poor as a CB”? are we referring to former Player of The Year & Club Captain Gary Caldwell? The guy with 50+ caps for his country and numerous domestic medals to his name??
Maybe you are judging him on his final two injury ravaged years as a player?
I prefer to remember him as a player instrumental in our great escape. Victories over Liverpool, Arsenal and United. Great memories that probably won’t be repeated.
But you are free to judge him on his twilight years if you like. :(
No Murph, i was judging his playing career on the basis that he was a poo CB from day 1. 50 odd caps for his country. True but let’s be honest, if my Nan was Scottish she would have got about 10 caps too. As i stated though, i haven’t seen them play yet and i really do believe he has the attributes to succeed as a manager but if he has just adopted the ‘Martinez style’ then it will be another season of mediocre doom and gloom i’m afraid. To be honest though, signing players like Jacobs and Francisco Junior i very much doubt it’s all out defend stuff. Will Grigg is proven at this level so the goals are there if the service is correct. Must admit though i was extremely disappointed to see Tav and Wag go. I can understand Perch, Delort and Rieira etc but they weren’t battlers like Waghorhn and Tav were plus Tavernier was proven at this level. Very short sighted in my opinion. I predict that Tavernier will have a couple of storming years at Rangers then find himself back in the Premier League. I am very seldom wrong with my predictions and i don’t think i will be wrong on this occasion either.
Total crock of shit ;)
Eggy you should have picked a better post to try a wind up on. You know what is coming next don’t you?
Which bit was the crock of shit, The fact i said he was a bad player or he has the potential to be a good manager haha. You should have generalized it a bit more ;) ;) ;)

I’ve read something similar to the bit in bold elsewhere ;) A grand opinion imo.
Someone’ll be along shortly to tell you you’re a cnut or suchlike and shouldn’t be supporting WAFC.
I have never written it anywhere else Tez, I read other message boards but i only comment on this one :)
Filmoss is the same as me, as are you. Donnys Page probably slots into the same category of poster too. If there is a slightly negative view on something you are chastised for it. Thats why i don’t post much any more. It doesn’t matter if the said opinion is right or wrong, In some eyes, if you are not singing from the same hymn sheet as everyone else then your a wrong un. ;) ;)

If he can find it within himself to play in Britain and happily accept the money given to him by his British club, the least he can do is respect their National Anthem.
The poppy issue – yes I can understand that.
This one however is disrespectful towards the fans who help pay his wages.
Whether you’re offended by it or not really depends on your political viewpoint I guess.
Had he still been at Latics & done it before the game against Southport would I have found it disrespectful towards me as a fan? – not in the slightest. The anthem doesn’t represent me & nowhere within its lyrics does it mention us as citizens. It’s a song about an unelected head of state born into immense wealth & power and has no relevance to me whatsoever.
Personally I find the anthem itself far more disrespectful & offensive to me than what James McClean did at the weekend
Sorry, disagree completely.
It’s more a matter of patriotism, and as someone who is proud to be British, I found it downright disrespectful considering he has chosen to make a living in Britain.
Forget the lyrics. They were written 200 years ago and lost their relevance a long time ago.
These days the song is a representation of being British, and not a literal collective hope that God saves a miserable looking 80 year old woman so she can be victorious, happy and glorious.
In essence whatever statement he thinks he’s making, he’s actually saying ‘I hate Britain and I’m only here for the money’.
I understood and respected his stance regarding the poppy – which is a direct British military reference, but this one is a step too far.
Keeping stony silent and even bowing his head would have done rather that his grand gesture.
Whilst i agree he has every right not to do it (as are his beliefs and rights as a human) i have to completely agree that the fact he deliberately turned his back and showed his disgust for it was a step too far. Everybody knows his stance on it and knows he wouldn’t have crossed his arm over his chest singing boisterously but he has started playing on it now, Letting everybody know every time it’s time to do it again. The show of petulance was (well petulant) but i agree. He should have just stood in the line and bowed his head. The Americans wouldn’t have had a clue what was going on but he made that much of a scene everybody couldn’t fail to notice.
You’re just like Sky – football didn’t exist before 1990
Nah we are just not all old feckers ;) ;) i am 30 and i first went in 93 so you have to be at least 35-40 but i would say about 45.
I think one poster did mmention his age group and how long he had been going.
So who is in your top 3?
Mine (from what i remember) and taking into account the levels of football at the time etc would be :- in descending order (and consistently playing, not just a few games = a dog shit player) but i need 4
4. Peter Kennedy
3. Michael O’Neil
2. Brian McLaughlin
1. Alan McLoughlin
Michael O’Neill? Another from a long list of those who got undeserved stick from fans who couldn’t spot a decent player if their lives depended on it.
Undeserved, not really, The O’Neil era saw me going to every home and away game so it’s a considered view. For every one good game he would completely outweigh it with 5 stinkers, long passes to nowhere, no pace, limited skill and great vision with no end product. Bit like Jordi Gomez was
Brian McLaughlin nearly got in mine but Peron just beat him to it.
How about Leigh Jenkinson and Ged Brannan?
Brannan was agonizingly close to creeping into mine.
Jenkinson only played a few times, i wouldn’t have him in there.
He was about the same time as Smeets. From what i remember i don’t think Smeets was as bad as the press he got. I remember him scoring 2 good goals against Brentford, 4-2 (i think) no research there so if that is correct then my memory is superb ;)
Peron was awful, As was Gino Padula, Darren Sheridan, Andy Porter and Graham Lancashire
Not many defenders making the list but the worst one i have seen is the current manager
