Indeed, stripes didn’t begin till we got in the football league (unless you count the ‘white braces’ we incorporated late 60s?)
Before the days of sponsors and all that fancy Dan stuff…..our kit was identical to the old Everton strip.
They daren’t let it go, the point about setting precedents is spot on.
Failing to fulfil a fixture is a heinous crime. Remember, a few weeks from the end of the season and the with the prospect of their results being expunged from the record we were all flapping, given the fact that we would drop into the relegation spots as we had taken most points off them from the teams in trouble. Also it could have affected the promotion issues in another scenario.
Clubs will end up in administration again unfortunately and if it’s financially expedient to bale out of a couple of fixtures, they might as well do so as there will be little chance of further punishment if they could refer to the fact that Bolton got a free pass.
Wigan Borough collapsed in the 30’s leaving fixtures outstanding and it was often quoted that this ‘history’ was a key factor in Latics repeated failures to get a Football League spot in years when they certainly ought to have been hot favourites……in the end it took the best part of 50 years for a Wigan club to get back in to the League.
They can hardly fine them as they have no cash…. and points deduction or a further relegation are the only appropriate punishments.
All that said around 25/30 years ago…..Spurs and Swindon were found guilty of the same offence (illegal payments was it?) …Swindon were relegated as punishment, Spurs got an affordable (for them) fine ……so the worrying thing is the Football League have ‘form’ for extreme bias against the smaller clubs !
I know many many of us will say it, but “I was there” if that’s the game we won 2-0 and the “terracing” was made up of stacked wooden pallets.
That jazzy strip (it was certainly a bit fancy at the time) went a good few unbeaten I seem to recall…also pretty sure it was a bit lively off the pitch at Giant Axe that day and n the way back to the coaches !
Eh up it’s landed today !
No £2 charge or owt
You do right !
I always have except this time…..ordered on line 2 weeks ago an seen nowt !
I dare say it was……given the Manc/scouse variants tend to be the club of choice for most of the rugby supporters
Nuneaton, what’s happened where ?
Riverside ?
I know broadly what group of folk you are talking about but unaware of what bother has been entered into …and where ?
I was also 12 years old and I remember it reasonably well, Geoff Davies had a header and he bounced it down on the line …..big Joe Corrigan was City’s young up and coming keeper but was prone to some gaffes early in his career ….the thinking was that he wouldn’t easily get down to stuff…..but he pulled off a blinding save and went on to become a superb keeper over a long period of time.
We didn’t hit the woodwork to the best of my recollection but we made them struggle at a point when they were reigning champions and goal scorer Colin Bell was likely the best player in the country at the time but to be fair they they had a lot of cracking players.
Other chief recollection was some young rough arsed City knobhead trying to wrestle my mates Latics scarf off him…(this is inside the ground) ..my mate Al hung on for grim death though and the bugger gave up.
Literally beside myself to see us on Match of the Day that night…..and yes we played in white with blue cuffs and trim ……and numbers !
I’ve. never sat down to watch a game but have seen plenty highlights clips…..and to be fair I’ve seen a few blinding goals…..and some nice play ….but dearie me….most of the goalkeeping has been
dreadful ….and some of it beyond parody. It’s Bobby Campbell alright and Dave Cusack was taking exception to Bobby’s challenge on the Donny keeper , which left the bloke in a heap !
I think….Cusack was player manager at the time ?
Actual – 63.
Mental – you to decide but my school report from 50 years ago said “GGs behaviour can at times be quite childish”. Oh for the perception of a teacher.
My first year report from my form teacher at WGS, contains the quote
“he seems resigned to a low standard of fooling”
Owd Jasper Melling wasn’t far wrong I’m shamefaced to admit (not just pricking about…but to a noticeably LOW standard)
Well down to their usual standards…..loathsome gits
AMEN BROTHER !!!
Well at my age (and weight) the knocks come thick and fast but it’s all part of the game…..ere …even had an op back in Sept, first one since I had my tonsils out in Billinge circa 1962 !
But I’ve ploughed on !61 in a month ☹️
Although gerrin’ owd is better than the alternative !
Cheers Horc, I’ve enjoyed it greatly……and my early season burst of form, has carried me through a recent barren patch !
…..it’s been a long road…..been a hard road and I’d like to thank…..blah blah etc …..(a tear forms in the corner of his eye)
I’ll be in touch about the shirt (it deffo won’t fit !!)
