I think we have two years of parachute payments left ? 2 years @ £16m (which we’ve had) and two more at £8m or something like that (I think!)
spot on ! And while we’re at it what about Burnley “a proper football club” so many say , how many are they averaging
In their 22,000 capacity stadium ? I expect they are selling out each home game are they ?As for their relatively low population it should be remembered that like many other more fortunate clubs there’s virtually ball all within a 20 mile radius and so they’ll monopolise the surrounding small towns an villages. (Doubt Accy are pinching too many off them)
Clubs like Norwich and Ipswich draw support from a County/region , we have no hope of doing that
Which rag ?
Yes……two aspects I know of
Firstly there was guy I vaguely recognised as a regular face at Latics … He made it his business to be walking about the ground half an hour befor KO and travelling over the canal bridge away from the ground, drawing comment from one or two who obviously knew him “you’re gooint wrong way” … To which he responded “sorry, morals, ethics….I just can’t do it” now he may well have held these feelings genuinely, but I was irritated to see him posturing (as I saw it) ” look at me look at me …I’m not going” Why didn’t he just stay away altogether ?
Conversely a lad I went to school with (we’re both mid fifties) who has been going literally his whole life….the second half of which has been spent living and working in London… From where he and his wife travel to attend 90% of home and away games. …Well he was distraught on Wed at the news of Mackays appointment and has sent his season tickets back to the club along with an explanatory letter. His wife is Malaysian and has herself been an avid and dedicated supporter for many years. He could not live with the decision and in his position I don’t blame him. This is no Johnny come lately this is a bloke who has spent fortunes and loads of his time following Wigan Athletic.
Before we dismiss all and anyone who turned their backs yesterday, it’s worth ‘thinking on’ a bit …. ?
Not since we were working our way up the divisions have I been a regular ‘poster’…and I did my share of ranting and certainly more of my fair share of piss taking viz a viz ‘the Rugby’…(as several articles in CL would testify)
Now maybe I’ve got fed up with it a bit and perhaps a further ten years on the clock has moderated my capacity for bile, but your post TL4eva is a pretty good example as to why I don’t engage in this level of nonsense.
As a reader I find Egg’s contributions broadly amusing and occasionally insightful … and the fact that he plays a central role in the running of this board says a great deal about how even handed and inclusive Latics fans are (and ought to be)
So he goes to both sports…so what ? Good for him, would that there were a few thousand more like him on each side and both clubs would be in a Bloody sight better state than they are today.
As for rugby fans hatred of us, we’ll I’m sure some of them do, but most of them likely don’t care one way or t’other, either way I no longer base my opinion of several thousand people on the inane outpourings of a few dozen imbeciles who vent their spleen on the message boards of rugby sites or engage in mard arse name calling on ‘The Post’ website.
Anyroad I’m equally disappointed with our start but I’m not sure how much more we could realistically expect…but it’s still half a dozen matches too soon to panic…..and it will always be too soon to be insulting a fellow supporter in the manner you just did….
Assuming you’ve calmed down you might want to consider offering Egg an apology ?For a start I’d hope anyone with any shred of sense wouldn’t piss on any statue regardless of the subject.
I’m not really in favour of statues of sportsmen being erected anywhere other than at or close to sports venues, town centre or city centre statues should be confined to those who have a long and distinguished civic record or maybe military service.
Anyroad as far as Billy Boston is concerned, he was an all time great in his sport, a pioneer for black sportsmen in this country and has lived most of his life here. He served me my last pint as a free man in The Griffin before I got wed across the road.!.. And on the few occasions I’ve met him, he’s come across as a right gent. He’s also as many have said a regular and long standing attendee at Latics … So God bless him and good luck to him I say .
Thanks for that Sammy , makes me feel somewhat better….Il be sure to mention it another of our gang today… Who basically did a celebratory knee slide in The Cherries (the daft sod)
Making yourself look a right tool, in a packed pub when channelling pure delirium at Sterling’s early goal of the tournament that had actually hit the side netting.
Ditto when hurriedly typing a sentence that loses its meaning and much of It’s impact, through the absence of punctuation (or helpful brackets)
Well the last time they went up … Their first Return to the Premiership for 15 years…..the ‘Super Hoops’ first game was at home to Bolton, now admittedly not the most attractive opposition but there were around 14,500 on….Anyone recall the furore there was over that ? The R’s ridicule and humiliation in the press ?
No me neither because there was none ….. Had it been Wigan Athletic , every gobshite in Fleet St would have been throwing themselves into the spleen venting frenzy.
(Oh and I cannot abide the sight of that smug git Tony Fernandes… Another downside to their promotion was that arsehole’s elation)
Football clubs have always benefited from local industrialists contributing to the club dating back to the local mill/factory owner etc.
Dave Whelan’s investment in Latics was never wildly disproportionate and whilst we were spending hundreds of thousands on the likes of Liddell and Howarth, trying to escape the old third division, that was dwarfed by the simultaneous spending of Al Fayed at Fulham I.e, £2.5M on a centre half (Chris Coleman). The sheer scale of the financial doping (as Platini would have it) we are seeing now is isn’t remotely in the same ballpark …QPR’s debts along with Bolton’s are absurd… Whereas Man City are no
Longer a football club, they are literally an oil producing nation. And I don’t believe we have transgressed any FFP regulations (yet) or indeed any salary cap rules !
Leave it tidy Simmpool ! Me and the Mrs get on for a fortnight on the 16th (Venice)
Wave as you come down the gang plank !
Well I am somewhat cloth eared to be fair !
Not saying you ain’t correct overall but I didn’t think we lead Doncaster at any point did we (We certainly didn’t over at their place !)
Egg…..to be honest I thought I heard the exact opposite that we’d only lost 6 points all season from winning positions .?.
Anyway, I’m not remotely surprised that he didn’t pick any of the ‘strikers’ because they’ve proven themselves to be broadly inept !
He didn’t. Trust any of em to do the job and as for next season we need to be looking for lower league players who can step up…. They are out there. as others have said , who had heard of Charlie Austin before he topped the scoring charts at Burnley …. They cash him in and find not one but TWO 20 goals plus forwards in the previously anonymous Ings and Vokes.
(I too am fearful that Dicko will come back to haunt us and the rest of the league next season)
Couldn’t build any pressure or keep the ball because we don’t have a centre forward worthy of the name at the club.
The fact that our leading scorers have 7 apiece tells you everything. To be honest it’s testament to how hard the defence and midfield have had to work to get us into this position in the first place.McLean, big heart, aggressive, a game runner, pity he’s not a footballer
Apparently you can only get back to Wigan via Stockport/Manchester though (I think?) no trains direct back to Wigan on that Sat night
