If someone had said to me that, we would have got beaten by Arsenal with penalties in FA cup Semi final and to loose in the play off semi final in extrra time I wouldn’t have believed them.

WELL DONE WIGAN !!

Upwards and onwards !!

Six months ago we’d all have said likewise ….

Leicester…2 strikers, Champions.
Burnley…..2 strikers, Runners Up.

Derby…….2 strikers, 3rd & Play off finalists.
QPR………2 strikers, 4th & Play off finalists.

Wigan…….0 strikers tonight, half of one on Friday, all so ran headless chickens.

Who in the right mind goes into a must win game without a striker on the pitch. I can’t even remember Martinez playing with no recognised striker.

McManaman and McLean are wingers not strikers, and have not had more than a dozen decent games between them all season.

Beausejour and Maloney might as well have been sat on mi mams couch with me for use they were.

Carson, Kiernan, Caldwell and Perch were good enough, Jordi was excellent again and McArthur was missed when he went off.
Roger was okay but doesn’t have the presence of McArthur.

Very disappointed, but it is a blessing we stayed down as we would have needed a complete new team, that said, we may still need a full team once all the crud are moved on.

Hopefully DW will back Rosler during the summer, but hopefully he will make him trim his squad down so he can’t fuck about with the team as much.

Whelan ‘ we know what we need …. trimmed down squad (budget considerations, no Europe league etc.), and a prolific striker (you don’t score goals, you don’t win prizes), .. such a simple game

EPL – City, L’pool (100+ goals); Coca Cola – Burnley (Vokes), QPR (Austin), B’burn (Rhodes) .. etc. etc.

Gomez, our player of the campaign (!!) off ??? sitting down (CCL) into next season won’t help matters thats for sure …

in reply to: Wasted oppurtunity at Rovers #130638
A real waste of an oppurtunity today at Blackburn playing all the loan shite.
Total lack of respect to Brighton and Reading too.
Big respect to Burnley again who played their first choice side at Reading.

Waste of an opportunity ? .. but we had leader, Caldwell, back !! :silly:

Lack of respect .. why ? did our defeat impact in any way BHA or Reading ??? … No!

Burnley .. haven’t played 60 games this season, and have no 2/3 Cup Finals yet to play ! Why wouldn’t you play your strongest team – thanks to all those who achieved promotion .. (they indeed DID have something to play for … impact of results, BHA v Reading (the better on the day goes into Play-Offs …)

UR did exactly as I would have expected – see also QPR team sheet yesterday by way of interest, and read Kevin Bond comments after the game

‘one eye on next week (team sheet versus Barnsley)….very difficult games against Wigan’

Lets hope he is right !!!! B)

One of those infuriating players who can play really well at one level, but isn’t able to progress to the next level.

It’ll be interesting to see how he plays over two games against QPR and possibly in a final against Derby. Will he continue to shine against two sides who have shown over 46 games to be more worthy of a place in the Premier League, or will the intensity of three premier-league standard games on the trot see him return to the Jordi of two seasons ago?

absolute tosh ..

How many has Gomes missed?

Gerrard has failed to score 8 (out of 45) penalties for Liverpool. He also missed in the penalty competition in the 2006 World Cup for England v Portugal.

So Gerrard’s hit rate is 8-9 out of every 10 … not perfect, but pretty damn good. Gomez ? No idea … not many (missed), I assume, but I’ll leave it to you Merlin the Mathematician to tell me how many.

And for the record, don’t be so daft as to ask Rodgers whether or not Gerrard’s penalty prowess has made a significant contribution to their(hopefully, trophy-winning) season this year … the points already been made by Rodgers and pundit alike on TV …

in reply to: Everton #130492

onwards and upwards …. but for Christ sake, get some penalty practice / taking strategy in place BEFORE the play-offs (UR) !! B)

Maybe they’ve already been practising penalties in training & Waghorn came out on top & that’s why he took one at the weekend??
yes, very good, and the outcome (Waghorn) was … :silly:

stick with tried sand trusted for starters (my prior comments re Gerrard … yes he may miss the odd one, but the majority go in (10 this season, if not mistaken ….) See Gomez, for Wigan …

What playoffs. We are wobbleling. Plus out all our games 17 games we aint scored in.our last four league games we lost three of them.lets look at the big picture.

You were saying .. (ps. later post – 29 games = 51 points + Cup semi (bigger picture)

‘wobbling’ (?!), my ass !!

onwards and upwards …. but for Christ sake, get some penalty practice / taking strategy in place BEFORE the play-offs (UR) !! B)

Blackburn game – not overly important (before the ‘dark side’ carried away re. result/performance)…….. but fit squad / key players free from injury is !!

Indeed, let look at the bigger picture …

Wigan Athletic manager Uwe Rosler:

“When I came in at the beginning of December we weren’t in a position to be anywhere near thinking about the play-offs but now with two games to go it is still in our own hands.

In the meantime, man, .. chill ..

Bad day at the office.

in reply to: Everton #130274
Bobby must have been practicing own goals with his team. They have scored two crackers including a brilliant diving header by Alaraz. Tee, hee

you mean like Uwe’s had us practising penalties this season ? …

since when did Gomez stop taking them – Waghorn’s turn today …

Stevie G missed one versus United recently (scored 2) … did he stop taking them subsequently … West Ham ???!!!!… think not

God help us if it gets to pens in the play-offs …

Uwe you may be German …. out team ain’t also, Elf Meter ueben bitte !!!!!

Danke schoen

Looks very like May 9th, QPR – Home – First Leg

Austin (and Doyle) back for QPR tonight; scored last minute winner, went off injured (bad one, hopefully !).

Beat Blackpool, then I trust UR will tinker to perfection (Brum, Rovers), to get the lads set up for what is going to be a tough old 2-legger. Loftus Road not our favourite hunting ground …

2-0 defeat today could be a blessing in disguise .. one lousy 45 mins. in the play-offs, and promotion may become a distant dream. Can’t be allowed to happen. Rather now than then. A timely reminder how quickly things can go pear-shaped !

Today, was never going to be our ‘Cub Final’ (no prizes handed out) was though for Burnley.

In Uwe we trust … B)

No prizes. Our team shouldnt need a prize to beat a team who are 2nd in the league.dont make cheap excuses hey pal. ;)
no cheap excuse, just facing facts .. ‘battle / war’, mean anything to you ? this season’s a marathon .. I’ll settle now for winning the really important games (3 – yet to come) by which time we’ll have played 63 /64 this season. Sure you would too …

As one said earlier on BBC Sport, with the squad we’ve got we should be TOP 2 – thanks to good old OC we’ve been in catch-up mode for a good while, credit to UR we should hopefully claim a play-off berth with 2 to play, and have had a great run in the Cup, … give credit where its due, mate .. and think bigger picture
We have let sum games go through changein the sqaud.going off 2days game no team in the playoffs will fear us.For Battle/War 2days 1st half we surrenderd.2nd half was a case of we tried but retreated.or did O.C take the medals. ;)
(try again) … ?????

3 Premier League hat-tricks.

Henri Camara
Marcus Bent
???????????

If scoring a hat-trick is not proof enough that a player is worthy of the division, then what is?

Wasn’t Gomez, was it ?! B)

Now I’m not saying that scoring 3 makes one a EPL player, but as you make the point not too many Latics players have done it in the EPL (IRRESPCTIVE as to the opposition).

People talk too freely about leaders (Caldwell ?!!) and role models. Without any regard to the debate about the pros /cons of Mr Gomez, if only for the way he goes about his job, to have taken some much sh1t from the Latics ranks over time and yet tough it out, maintain his self-respect and progress to become an increasingly prominent, and high-impact (goal tally, football ‘brain) member of the playing squad, is great testimony to him … he is a role model !

For someone ‘so slow’, ‘always caught in possession’, a style of play arguably not conducive to UR’s high tempo, energy emphasis …. he’s obviously doing something right ! Pity a few idiots on here just don’t see it.

What was it UR said the other week when interviewed after Bolton game ..missed pen
‘I wish I had 11 JGs ….’

Doesn’t go hiding, always looks to get on the ball, willing to take responsibility much of same will be required of the team in the nerve-jangling Play-Offs …

Am I missing something?

Espinoza is brilliant at the running around and tackling bit, but at times his passing is shocking.

It was exactly the same yesterday. He had a decent game but was behind McArthur, Gomez, and Perch for me.

It’s the energy “running around” and closing down that makes the difference – the final piece of the jigsaw. When you consider all the loanees who’ve played and contributed very little, Rog was a breath of fresh air yesterday and the performance of the whole siide was lifted.

Leave the fancy passing to Mr Gomez who was also excellent yesterday as was young James.

Best league performance of the season for me. :)
Yes, leave the fancy passing to Gomez, but passing to one of your own players should be a prerequisite for any player.

He ran like f’ck yesterday, but what’s the point of running and tackling when 50% of the time you give it back to the opposition. Reading were poor, so he got away with it.

Realistically, if McCann or Watson were fit, Espinoza wouldn’t start. He deosn’t retain possession well enough for either Martinez or Rosler’s liking.
But some just fail to grasp the concept :silly:
