Excellent start, first 10-15. WBA didn’t touch the ball.

Only WBA threat from set-pieces, then we go and switched off for the 2 goals. Brunt (in 2nd /3rd phase) given far too much time to get in the cross for the first; second, no comment.

Thought Watson was excellent today, far and away our best player … first real misplaced pass of any consequence…84th min. Even got the set pieces right today. Stood and applauded him off goodpost

Di Santo didn’t look to be at the races today, not quite so hungry and sharp…bit of a disappointment (thoughts on Argentina /Saudi ?)

For the possession we had 2nd half, thought we huffed and puffed, that we created little in the way of clear-cut chances (3, tops).

WBA to their credit played well in the 2nd, defended their lead well and played some decent possession football (Latics style).

Case of what might have been … great start(following on WHU, Spurs), but concede sloppy goals and you get your just deserts !

Disappointing. Any 3 (min. draw) would have given us additional momentum going to Anfield next week.

Let’s keep the 3 theme thing ….3 nil to the tics…

3rd goal, third minute of injury time, (sub) Alcaraz (no. 3…of course!) B)

West Brom away ! 3 on the trot anyone ? I think we can.

Most definitely. Our dynamic duo due a goal or two !

Gets us back to within 3 of WBA, half-way up….

    Onwards and upwards !

Has all the makings of a good game.

Is he a politician as well as a footballer?

    goodpost

If we do lose him (he may have second thoughts after most recent trip back to Africa!), and on the basis IC go all the way / Kone comes back ‘fit’ …., likely to miss :

    SAT 19 JAN Sunderland (H)
    TUE 29 JAN Stoke (A)
    SAT 2 FEB Southampton (H)
    SAT 9 FEB Chelsea (A)

Next ANC : South Africa, 2013

    PS.

Nice to finally see Figueroa being given the opportunity at set-pieces; came very close yesterday (Friedel /wall well glad to keep out the way)

    Englishman breaks record
Ben Watson becomes the first Englishman to score a league goal for Wigan in 2012. They had scored 34 league goals in 2012 before this match and all had been scored by overseas players

Tottenham Hotspur have lost back-to-back Premier League home games for the first time since September 2008

Spurs failed to score at home in the Premier League for the first time since 19 March 2011, this after netting in 29 successive games at White Hart Lane before this match

There is no way we could of kept that sort of effort up over 95 minutes had we put the first team out against Bradford.

Its all good and well saying players on their wages should be able to play 2 games a week and I am sure they can… Alot better than the posters who think they could on here too.

But at Tottenham away you need to give 110% which is exactly what we did today.

Getting knocked out by Bradford is it a shambles or just one more Robert Martinez masterstroke.

    Didn’t Ramis /Watson play 120 and another 90 today ??

Not sure we’re talking about the first 11 going out at Bradford, maybe a couple more than the one outfield player (Ramis) who played against West Ham.

Without wishing to go over old ground, one early goal (game over) and Bobby could have gone to town, substituting /blooding more youngsters (resting the ‘old, established’ for Saturday).

Might also have allowed the likes of Maloney, Kone etc. to get on the score sheet, instilling them with confidence /sharpness for today (fortunately, Watson took his chance)

Take a look at Swansea – same core have played against City last week, Liverpool in mid-week and Chelsea today – they haven’t done too badly.

Spurs were in the Capital cup also this week. Faced more difficult tie on paper than ours …

    goodpost goodpost goodpost

    – first clean sheet since Southampton
    – league position looking a lot healthier

    – look forward to QPR / Reading tomorrow, hope that McDermott puts 5 past
Hughes (and avoids taking 7) B)

    1505:

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger: “I think [the start did not help us], it was important not to put ourselves in trouble, which is what we did. We had a lot of the ball after we conceded the first goal but we did not create a lot.

“Then, when we were 2-0 down and down to 10 men it became difficult, if it was 11 v 11 then we could have come back.

“Yes [Wilshere’s sending off] looked harsh from the stand, the second yellow.

“I think we were a bit unlucky, especially with the penalty decision, we always have a penalty against when we play Manchester United, us so we get used to it.

“We had the better chances than but overall in a game like this you ought to not put yourself on the back foot when you are one down.”

Wonder whether Wenger will cop for a fine also ??

    We have our own problems

Crawley player racially abused by Wigan fan

I had originally hoped it was the Post jumping on their own agenda bandwagon to link the Wafc with us, but unfortunately looking at other reports in less biased reports they are correct. The tweets do seem to originate in Wigan.

If you are a member of this site then can I just say you are not welcome at our club.

On the subject of which, the good few singing ‘ENGERLAND, ENGERLAND …’
on Tuesday night certainly didn’t cover themselves in glory …

Chap next to me didn’t get it (had to explain…)

Hate is a very strong word for another person…then their is Diouf..

the very one named a ‘sewer rat (Blackburn/QPR)’ at the time by his new boss, N Warnock (Leeds)

Is this the same ref who didn’t give the Spurs goal v Man utd Roy Carroll and allowed Rooney to assault our very own James McCarthy….In Fergies pocket….

and also allowed Utd the goal at OT versus Spurs a couple of seasons back (the free kick that was / wasn’t taken by Spurs)

in reply to: Glad I Stopped At Home !! #96130

Unfortunately not. Had we progressed we’d have been ball 4 with Leeds moved up to ball 3 in place of Bradford. Therefore, we’d have been playing Chelsea in the next round.

Would we? How were they numbered?

If purely alphabetically then the draw as it stands is
    5 v 4
    8 v 6
    7 v 2
    3 v 1

If we were 8 we would have played number 6, Norwich, at home.

However 3 v 1 would have been Chelsea v Arsenal, so that draw would never have happened ;)[/quote]

blimey, figuring out the magic 6 numbers (retire tomorrow), is easier !

whatever, the draw would / wouldn’t have been, fair to say that progress to the last 8 and beyond would have

    – generated much-need additional revenue for the club (transfer window)
    – given a LIMITED number of fringe players (further) opportunity to pit
their wits against the best (Forect /Bradford to Arsenal /Chelsea)
    – helped raised the profile of Wigan Athletic, domestically and abroad
    – potentially brought one or two fair weather supporters down to the DW
    – given the hardy ‘core’ something to shout about

    ALL POSITIVE …

    – As for doing the ‘impossible’, Cardiff came mighty close last year.
Granted Liverpool are no Chelsea (Arsenal?); hopefully, we’re a notch
    up on Cardiff.

What’s done is done, but no doubt, missed opportunity.

    (End of) Tottenham, Saturday ….

Well Norwich and Swansea have progressed to the Quarters tonight. Add to those Leeds, Middlesbrough and Villa from last night and you cant help but think what might have been !!

    LEAGUE CUP QUARTER-FINAL DRAW

    Leeds United v Chelsea
    Swansea v Middlesbrough
    Norwich v Aston Villa
    Bradford v Arsenal

Good draw for Bradford, Emirates would probably have been better (£££)

    Wigan ?

Beat Arsenal (win, draw, pens), avoid Chelsea and a Wembley appearance was very much up for grabs ….

in reply to: Assessment Of Martinez #96066
Well after many months of championing Boselli the lad seems to be making me look like I have no idea what I am talking about ( Please refrain from the obvious riposte ! )Well the player in question is our record signing brought in by Mr Martinez and so the question is does the boss know his onions ? Had he been given that free financial reign, how many other duffers would he have squandered Uncle Dave’s money on ?

Has had the odd blip in the transfer market, hopefully his recent acquisitions will shape up (Kone, a steal, off to a flyer…).

Has provided for stability at the club with Uncle Dave’s significant backing. In so doing, overseen transformation of the playing staff / style of play, to one more cost effective and easy on the eye.

Undoubtedly, he has made mistakes (who hasn’t ?), but has matured as a manager and got his team, back end of last season, to turn on ‘Barca-like’ performances against the big guns, that had the New York Times (or something similar)drooling about Wigan Athletic (who?).

Having worked on the foundations over several seasons and given us an inkling of what can be achieved (latter 2011/12), a positive campaign this year (Top 12)will further enhance his reputation.

the thing with the league cup is you either go for it, play your best team in every game and try and win the thing or play a mix of first teamers and fringe players and hope for the best. for the first two games it worked but last night it didn’t. its the same with all the prem teams, yes i know prem survival is priority, but i cant help feeling we’ve missed a great opportunity and its the same every season in both cups. i come off last night as pissed off as everyone else, but judging by the team selection mr martinez wasnt taking it too seriously, a big deal was made about how many they were bringing and trying to get our lot to turn out and then he puts a team out like that, thats what pissed me off the most and the thing is we will be having this same debate again in january after the third round of the f.a cup

thing is win last night, a favourable draw tonight and we really would have been cooking on gas, that’s what frustrated me most.

think most would accept a 3rd round FA Cup exit if we had had a decent Capital cup run; PL our ‘bread and butter’.

Incidentally, Talk Sport pundit was last night giving Sunderland bloody hell for having lost to Middlesbro’ and passed up the opportunity for
some success (non-performing team .). Being ‘little Wigan’ can sometimes work to our advantage (weren’t mentioned … !)
