Remember in the words of Bob its all about the performance not results at this stage of the season, take a leaf from his book and ignore the table :)
both possible (proven)…final 10 games last season (basically, the same team this…with reinforcements) ;)

What’s wrong in having high expectations ?

in reply to: thoughts on team for saturday #91897
al habsi

alcaraz
caldwell
figs

boyce
beausejor (if fit)

mc carthy
macarthur

maloney
moses (if still here) if not miachi???

kone

Agreed. Though would possibly start with Di Santo. H2 – Kone.

Lets stop p**ssing about and get some points on the board. All very well to let players play themselves in; but more important to get points on the board early doors. Don’t want to be playing catch up like last year.

The old addage – ‘why fix something that ain’t broken ? Give the guys that finished last season at best team in the Premiership bar only Man City (7-1-2) the chance to carry on the good work. They’ve earned it.

If Ramis does play, then better to take one of Caldwell / Alcaraz out (on current form I wouldn’t), and put Figeuroa back to left hand side, Beausejour in front, much improved balance and options going forward.

Note that Hughes down at QPR is already investing in 2 new defenders (Cavalho, Dawson) and goaldkeeper (Boruc) after Saturday disaster…

in reply to: Lee McCulloch #91835

Bought from Motherwell, along with Sicknote.

Not good enough (as a young ‘un) to cut it as prolific centre-forward.

Converted to left-sided right-footed midfielder by Jewell and made the position his own. Became something of a star. Always gave it his best. Has stayed loyal to Rangers.

Another good memory….scoring the winner in last couple of minutes at Britannia…cracking goal…our first ever win away at Stoke (hate ’em). Came in a midweek game, following the prior weekend away at Leeds (2-0). Two cracking victories…we were on our way to the PREMIERSHIP !!

in reply to: Ramis!!!!!! #91802

a centre half is in the team to defend not distribute he did not do his job imo

In this team, it’s a centre half’s job to do both – imo
Indeed, the good teams have always had them – Beckenbauer (Germany), Baresi (Italy), Le Blanc (France), Puyol (Spain) …

Ball retention….surely we’ve learned the importance of by now ??

in reply to: positives from todays game #91785

Most half decent players will turn a defender like Hazard did to Ramis when the defender naively commits himself when all he had to do was stand his ground !

In all fairness I think Hazard made that look very easy as he does with alot of his football.

And I dont think Ramis or anyone else for that matter was expecting Ivanovic to do his Usain Bolt impression…

So while he could of done better so could Figs for getting back quicker and Al Habsi for his very questionable positioning.
Not quite sure Ivanovic is U Bolt but yes, both Figs and Ali could have done better positionally – Ali shouldn’t have been beaten on near post Poor ball from Di Santo set the whole thing up…

in reply to: Ramis!!!!!! #91775
I really am acting as Devil’s Advocate here –

– but people are talking about Ramis’ inexperience at PL level being his undoing in those first minutes.

He has been defending against Messi, Ronaldo, Lloriente, Iniesta etc etc etc. Hazard isn’t the best he’s played against.

By saying this I’m actually supporting the lad. He is quite up to PL pace etc. He just had a bad few minutes.

He’ll be reet.

Exactly…Hazard isn’t the best (why the surprise….).
Committed himself for first goal (partly at fault).
Done on several occasions for pace (not just a few bad minutes), Hazard, Torres, Oscar …
Poor challenge in penalty area for 2nd (Figueroa did little to help..)
highlighted risk of a ‘steady’, right-footed centre back, playing left hand-side and up against pace (Valencia, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Walcott, Sinclair, Dyer, Moses (?), etc. in the months to come). Figueroa – when he’s at the races – provides more pace and balance on left hand side. Good combination with Beausejour.
Hopefully, Ramis will be reet. Suffice to say, he’s got a way to go and it may well be in different position to one taken yesterday, if Chelsea is anything to go by.

in reply to: Pass the sick bucket! #91741

Unfortunately, the guy is spot on !

Hazard certainly looked a diferent player to the one that didn’t turn up for Belgium recently in the Wembley pre-Euro friendly (England 1-0).

Basically, the difference – won the game for them today – the other usual suspects – Lampard, Cole, Terry (living on reputation), Torres… etc. we were able to cope with.

I was very confident at kick-off. Hazard soon changed that.

Incidentally, Ivanovic – sent off in last weeks Charity Shield – and yet unfortunately, didn’t receive match ban. Pity !

in reply to: Ramis!!!!!! #91738

Forgive me for asking, but I am just curious. How did you manage to post your Ramis rant at 3pm? Was you at the game? No seriously, I’m just wondering if you went.

Why ask such a silly question. Quite clearly not. Look i said the performance was great and we needed more than relying on boyce, Gomez etc running into the box to support the front man. Need 2 strikers or we WILL NOT score goals. He has done it for 3 seasons. Moses was crap and un-interested, McCarthy and McArthur were poor and That Ramis is shocking. Oscar jogged past him in the second half for a 1 on 1. He wont be good enough, He will cost us a ton of goals with that kind of defending and lack of pace. The two mc’s can improve and Moses will probably go anyroad but Ramis cant learn pace. Against speedy forwards he is going to be prone to sending off’s and giving penny’s away. Kone looks a handful and am looking forward to seeing more of him and where was Miyachi to cover Beasoujour

Agreed, Ramis can’t learn pace. Hopefully, he can rid himself of his shackles ! In any event, doesn’t appear naturally suited to LHS in back 3 – Figueroa for me. Beausejour in front (2 natural ‘lefties’). Better options going forward and more width in team from back to front.

in reply to: After Match Thoughts….Don’t Be Too Critical! #91736

I text my mate after Ramis had got done to ask what the bloody hell was going on. I don’t think he grew into the game and i don’;t think he looked comfortable at any time. Might be better to shift him out the right side of the defence and let him concentrate on his stronger side.

Very early days, but tend to agree. Personally think that in a back 3 system there’s a far better balance with Figueroa playing to the left hand side, supporting Beausejour as left wing back. Brings a better balance to the team and offers up more opportunities (going forward..)

Ramis was done twice early doors and again in the second half by Torres before he salvaged the situation with goal line clearance.

Moses did himself some credit today given the context. Kone looked busy when he came on and eager to impress. Nice touches and intelligence …

Credit to the team for not going under (cf. QPR, Norwich) after shocking first 6 minutes. The Wigan of 2/3 years ago would probably have come out the game 0-5, 0-6 worse off. Last 60 mins – not quite at the level of last season (last 10).

Next week at Southampton, I’d have Figueroa at left back, Beausejour – assuming fit and available (what happened today ?) at left wing back
and 2 off Ramis / Alcaraz and Caldwell in defence.

Up front, depends on what happens on the Moses front. Pity Kone didn’t get off the mark today. After our recent disasters in the strikers department (Scotland, Bosselli, Sammon), would be great for a newcomer to make a flying start and really kick on… hopefully, the goals will come soon.

Assume Maloney went off due to injury (?). Hopefully, nothing serious and available next weekend (Gomez…sorry no; slow, slow , slow…).

get well soon tony(zico). formed one of the best ever latics midfield partnerships in my opinion along with graeme barrow.

Him and Langley not too shabby either …

in reply to: All Set Up Nicely Again! #91643
The usual suspects have predicted us down again, Harry Redknapp, Jamie Redknapp, Matt Le Tittier, The Guardian, Charlie Nicholas, Alan Shearer, Phil McNulty and of course Mark Lawrenson to name a few. So everything is going to plan, These so called pundits are supposed to know what they are talking about, To just be just so blasé about predicting us down again when we clearly have a much better squad and a much much better team ethic just proves these idiots don’t do any kind of homework to base the shite they spot on. Just makes it better when it get’s rammed down their throats in 9 months. Imagine if we got a European spot, They would petition the F.A to get us thrown out.

Surprisingly though, Jeff Stelling, Paul Merson and Robbie Savage think we are ok for once.

Saw piece on the Internet yesterday – Stelling interviewed, had us going down. Maybe he’s changed his mind on the back of our recent recruitment initiative. Hopefully, a good number of our so-called experts will also change their tune in the coming weeks !

Come to think of it, I suggest that we kick ’em out and roll in Michael Johnson (Athletics, Olympics)…talks far more sense, and may I suggest knows even more about the beautiful game that those idiots on MOTD and SKY

in reply to: Victor Moses – My Theory #91585
Victor Moses will sign for Chelsea on Monday or Tuesday next week.

As they want to sign him, obviously they rate him as a player and are wary of what he could do to them this weekend.

So, Chelsea are fully prepared to pay the asking price for Moses, but only after they’ve unsettled him and either lost him his place in the Wigan starting eleven on Sunday, or made sure he’s so preoccupied with his impending move that’s he’s totally ineffective.

Martinez now has to decide whether Victor is up for it and wants to impress Chelsea, or if he’s likely to be a liability because he can’t be bothered playing – as has tended to happen when things don’t go his way.

Personally, I’d leave him out of the side.

Well, that’s my opinion anyway.

If his form is consistent with Blackburn and Wolves – last 2 games last season – then he ought to be left out anyway. Seemed to be caught up in his own publicity a little.

Martinez rightly made an example of – and pulled him off early days against Wolves for doing ‘zip’

in reply to: The annual poll – where will we finish? #91546
Same sentiments as Griff but i think he has set himself on a high pedestal with the signings. It could be an anti-climax or a wonderful season. Moses can go now for me. I wouldn’t even put him in the side now with the signings. Nice 9m and 2m profit on summer transfers is good business. But would still like a right back.

Key to our season could well be the 2 Mcs in the ‘engine room’ staying fit and playing to form (ditto last 10 games 2011 /12).

If one or the other gets bad injury (e.g McCarthy vs. Bowton a couple of years back), then I worry about the ability of Frazer F (19) to play week in, week out. Hope he’s good. One area where we could potentially come undone ….

in reply to: Moses next season if he goes to Chelski.. #91168

Nah I don’t reckon Heskey Chimbonda and Bullard were after a long glamerous career after leaving us.

They got what they wanted. Maybe not what you wanted but hey, who gives a shit about you. So back to your initial point! I don’t think victor is on 20k.

Correct Moses was offered a new double your money package worth 20k a week by DW in an effort to keep him at Wigan.
Correct, wigmon (ie. £10k, Go £20k) !

in reply to: Uncle Dave #90936

Is it me or have West Ham put a bid in for everyone this summer?

They are now trying to hijack a Bolton deal for some Costa Rican.

Does anyone really want to go to a club run by Spivs and managed by Fat Sam?

Diame obviously did (£9k – on very good authority – to £50k per week) :(
Not sure why the sad face at the end?

If they want to pay that then they’re very welcome to him.
Good player, even if agreed that not worth £50K per week
