Well that was bloody awful. Dull slow play, negative tactics, inept and non committed defending, you can go on and on. Not a team I would have selected and not the changes I would have made either.
What a miserable start to the new year
All the best!!!!Substituting Gibson for the useless Windass????
Gibson wasn’t playing badly either.
Roberts was totally goosed again so should have been a straight swap for McMannaman but oh no let’s just make him labour on for 45 mins FFS!! Felt sorry for him. Evans stunk and is so negative. Grigg would have had to come on for Massey. Totally toothless and outclassed by a side playing with two strikers. How they do that I just don’t know.
Windass has shown he can be a very useful player. But he needs to be playing in the No.10 position feeding Grigg, and with support from a pacey pair of wingers. Basically set-up how we started the season. Injuries have hurt but the killer has been the defensive play and selections. We showed against West Brom and Derby what we can do when we go all out.I don’t understand why Cook has done a complete 180 on how we played at the start of the season. It’s like he was spooked by those 3-2 games (for and against) and has killed our attacking game to shore up the defence. The lack of goals is the real killer. When playing better quality opposition they’re always likely to get one, if not two.
It’s difficult to imagine Cook still being here on 2nd January.
It could happen. But that will require us to overcome our awful away form against two quality teams. And now turn around a home losing streak. Pressure games against top teams. But we are in this position because we’ve failed to pick-up the so called winnable points.
If we suffer a comprehensive defeat I could well see IEC pulling the trigger. We are past the point of a dip in form and in full blown crises mode. If they throw money at the problem of course Cook could do the job. I just worry he doesn’t have the answers if he has to continue with a limited squad and an absent Powell.
If the owners want premier league football in 2 seasons, they might just inject a little (but not too much that will put us in debt) more money into the kitty. I cant see them pulling the plug after a handful of games.
I have no expectation of getting promoted. If you’re in this division you’ll always have a chance. But it’s not something you can bet the future of the club on. What we do have to bet on is staying in this division. It’s the only way we can seriously grow commercial & match day revenue and utilise this stadium. Remaining in the top two divisions is also essential to player trading. Decent transfer fees can be garnered, something IEC say is a core part of their business model. That also applies to youngsters coming through the ranks. Many of which are highly regarded at their age group.
Drop down a division and we’ll be forced into a fire sale and risk losing young players for peanuts. We are now very much in a situation where the club needs an injection of cash into the playing squad to stabilise us and ensure future growth.
So who is capable then week in week out of getting results with a limited squad and no powell against sides with 10x+ yhe transfer budget? When Martinez did it year after year he was deemed to be shit, so who is capable that will play the 442 exciting football that we all so dearly crave?
Who wants 442?
Our form went to shit because Cook messed around with the formation and our approach to play once injuries hit. Massey’s pace was a loss but all other positions could have been covered with the existing squad. We are unrecognisable from the team that started the season, irrespective of personnel. The closest we got was when down to ten men against Derby. The shackles came off and we looked better than at any other game these past 2-3 months.
The Premier League is a massive gulf in quality over the Championship. Excellent sides can still be relegated given the resources of the opposition. In the Championship only poor sides go down. There isn’t the strength in depth. The odd season you get an outsatanding side or two, but most can beat each other on their day.
Our form the last few months has us bottom of the league. Below sides like Bolton, Ipswich, Rotherham and Millwall. While the likes of QPR and Hull are now pulling well out of sight. The better managers will learn from their mistakes. When you hit a 2-3 month slump and see no signs of improvement, no signs of adapting, then you have to worry.

In ordinary circumstances a point today would have eased the pressure. But after being 0-2 up, it feels like a defeat. Tuesday a good performance is needed and at least a point. To be honest we are now reaching the stage where we need to be regularly picking up 3pts. The odd point here and there will still see us slip into the bottom three.

Not exactly Cooks fault if the players are missing simple chances though is it? If we werent creating those chances then yeah ok, but we are creating them we are just missing them. Are we creating chances?
We where toothless today. The closest we got was James’s cheeky free-kick. Very rarely do we put together sustained pressure. We stumble upon a break or cross. We can’t even rely on set-pieces any longer. It’s as if we don’t practice them……along with throws-in’s. Evermore we resemble the ineptitude of the Joyce era. Since mid-October we’ve been saying we’ll turn it around. If anything we are getting worse by the week.
And had we sold Powell you would have done nothing but moan that we sold our best playerEveryone wanted to keep him…….with the intention of a new deal. If that wasn’t on the table (and we still don’t know that) it is verging on negligence to turn down a reported £10m. That sum could fund the club’s losses for a year or more. Or should we choose, help with a recruitment drive, to bring much needed quality into the club.
Powell can’t lace Dack’s boots.
To be considered in such high esteem you need to be playing regularly, and contributing, most games. Powell’s done nothing for us since Bristol City at home. Well before his injuries kicked in. Dack’s been a pivotal figure for Blackburn, week in, week out. He’s also signed a long-term deal ensuring they’ll get a big pay-off if someone does come sniffing. Powell’s sat on his backside and 2 weeks away from being able to walk on a free. If he does sign a new deal, fair enough, we can be patient and wait for him to get back to 100% fitness. If he just doesn’t fancy it and running his deal down, we need to move him on, bring in someone who can stop the slide into the bottom three.
Can we also stop with the BS about injuries costing us. They’ve undoubtedly been a factor. But Cook has done a 180 on our style of play. Earlier in the season we where a joy to watch. Conceded a few but always liable to get a couple ourselves. After some narrow away defeats he switched to this agricultural long-ball crap and watched over the worst run of away form in the country. To make matters worse this style of play’s been adopted at home. We had a nice mix of our passing game and hitting it long when needs be. In the last month it’s been long-ball at all costs and resulted in our home form also taking a dive.
PS, I’m not one who thinks McManaman is a world beater. But with the absence of Massey and Jacobs it’s clear Cook doesn’t rate him. We have Byrne like a fish out of water on the right wing, and on the other side, Roberts doing his best, but he’s not a winger. I’d like to think Cook would have identified James’ attacking qualities and used him further up field. Push him on and slot Byrne into the right-back position. Stick McManaman on the left. In the absence of Powell we need to look at putting Roberts in the middle. Morsy and Evans are playing too deep and creating little.

We were dreadful.
We’ve become the kind of long-ball cloggers everyone hates to watch. Difference if this team can’t score, can’t defend, and are easily bullied.
A manager who appears clueless as to how to rectify things. Sure, we’ve had some injuries. But that’s no excuse to abandon our attacking, attractive, football. For the past month and a half we’ve been getting progressively worse. Yet the manager continues to pick the same players and employ these awful tactics.
I’m sure most would have taken 16th at the beginning of the season. I can’t say I would be enthusiastic to watch such uninspiring stuff. But if we could bank that 16th place, and prepare for next season, fair enough.
Trouble is I don’t think we’ve bottomed out. I could be completely wrong and we go onto pick-up a healthy points haul. But we haven’t been ticking along, picking up the odd points, home and away. We have won 1 point from 27 away and relied on great home form.
Our next three home games are Brum, Sheff U and Villa. Is Cook going to be telling us we can’t expect too much? Because if we pick up any less than 3pts from those fixtures, and our away form doesn’t improve, we’ll be bottom three in January. A difficult window to bring players and turn it around at the best of times. Even worse if your struggling.
Spot on Cookie lad:“It is what it is, and we’re in a division where the criteria for every team will be different.
“If we’re expected to be anywhere else in the league other than where we are, I wouldn’t buy into that in any way, shape or form.
“If other people expect anything else, good luck to them with that.”
I would hope 1 point in 27 away from home is not the criteria of any team. If it wasn’t for exceptional home form we’d be bottom three. So what is it? Either we’re an excellent team with unexplainable away form. Or we’ve rode our luck at home. Either way it points to serious issues.
We rolled into Ipswich yesterday emphasising the importance of the game to THEM. The result puts them back in the running and drags us into a relegation battle. QPR, Preston, Millwall, Reading, Bolton, Ipswich. Capitulations every last one of them. Outfought, and sometimes outplayed, by the worst sides in the division.
You can’t justify Cook leaving now.
But if we don’t average a point, or more, per game, from now until early January. A decision will need to be made. Our away form is dreadful, our home form will inevitably falter. At which point we’ll be one of the relegation favourites.
‘Who wants the tedium of mid table mediocrity and the relaxation of watching another meaningless game!??’
That’s exactly what this club needs. Each relegation has seen us shed yet more fans, despite coming back up. It would be a huge gamble to expect us to gain promotion a third time. Not to mention see us overhauling the squad yet again. Unless the owners spend above and beyond to secure our position in the Championship. We are in danger of slipping even further down the leagues. Don’t underestimate the need to stay up this season.
So they have us picking up 1pt from 18pts on offer.
Over the same period they have Brentford picking up 12pts, Bolton 10pts and Ipswich 9pts.
OK.
I’m going with my young daughter, rip off yes but can’t miss it that’s if they haven’t been wound up before and moving out for the super warriors play off top half champs.Attend this game and it gives the green light for £35 (minimum) pricing for all future fixtures. If other clubs take note it will become the norm.
Each to their own. I just can’t get my head around Latics fans snapping up tickets from a club who make no bones about trying to rip you off.
There’s a non-disclosure agreement.
Congrats on breaching that
Which has nothing to do with those dates. They’re published on IEC’s website. No one can yet put a date on the final completion date.
