Your obsession with Latics attendances has clearly not been thorough enough mutty as away fans rarely get more than 4500 tickets for the North Stand, indeed Liverpool have got under 4000

The anti-Martinez mob probably moan about the price and taste of ale too much to go in pubs ;)

Simply the greatest spectator sport in the world.

Last two words The Egg. The world, not the UK, not Europe, not the M62 Corridor the world. A pretty bold statement yet to be backed up. My question was a simple enough one – if it’s so great why does hardly anyone in the world play or watch it?

No offence mate, and fair play to you for watching both, I wish everyone in Wigan did the same. Sadly amongst the rugby fraternity, their are too many people like Rogues Gallery who instead of supporting their local football team would rather attempt to take the piss out of them and come on here with the sole purpose of muck raking

I agree with Tyldesley, these injuries unfortunate though they are happen all the time and have happened for years at all levels of the game. I remember Neil Davids and Andy Ainscow ( twice ) suffering compound fractures

Trouble is now is that players are assets worth millions of pounds, Sky show replay after replay, radio phone ins and the media whip these things up into a frenzy. With players being leaner now and wearing lighter footwear and the pace of the game being quicker, these things happen even more nowadays. 30 years ago you practically had to stab someone to get sent off with all sorts of challenges which are outlawed now at best ignored or unpunished

Same goes for penalty decisions and free kicks etc, it is supposed to be a contact sport, so you should be able to make contact with an opposing player, youre just not allowed to foul them-there is a difference! You simply cannot go near an attacking player and attempt a tackle now if you are defending the box as Melchiot found out on Saturday

That said horrific injury and hope the lad gets well soon
PS Imagine the media frenzy if he’d been English

in reply to: Where`s `Big Gob` Whelan? #25025
Calm before the storm. I think Whelan will sack Martinez and will do it this season. He would sooner have £40 million for staying up than a fraction for relegation.

So he sacks Roberto and we automatically stop up, how on earth do you work that out?

Who does he bring in for the last 12 games? Himself? You? Maurice Lindsay? I am sure all the Champ Manager experts on here would be able to turn us around and get us safely into mid-table? Simply click formation, change 451 to 442 and we’ll be in mid-table before you know it! Really is that simple isn’t it

Don’t mistake quality for quantity.

I watched the Wire v Wigan game and then the Wigan v Spurs game. If you are telling me that the Latics v Spurs game was better than the Wire v Wigan game then you are seriously deluded.

To compare the sports from an independent source please listen to a well respected presenter here who actually commentates on BOTH sports.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p006j503/Rugby_League_Extra_25_02_2010/

Oh right so because some bell end of a rugby fan from Wigan says RL is the world’s greatest spectator sport and links to some journalist on a rugby league page who watches the game, that’s two people – when are you going to get around to ensuring that the other 6.8 billion people in the world automatically agree with your statement? You did speak on behalf of the world after all didn’t you? I am sure if you ask Americans many will say baseball or American football, Ask Japanese they will say sumo, ask Europeans, South Americans or Africans they will say football. Ask Australians and you’ll have as many saying cricket, aussie rules, RU as RL given that it is by no means that countries prominent code.

But oh no, your sample of two people can apparently speak for the WHOLE WORLD of 6.8 billion people, of which around 6.79 billion have never even heard of rugby league. Come back with something better please.

Try leaving your house once in a while, there is a big wide world out there beyond the pit villages of Lancs & Yorks which you inhabit, and the insular world of RLfans.com where self serving idiots convince themselves that they are right to turn their back on the local team who is playing the national and global game in favour of some 21st century version of shin kicking ( and then hypocritically go and pledge allegiance to a big football club from a city they have no connection to ) Hardly anyone in the world gives a toss so if this perceived quality that you speak of is so great, why does the world ignore it?

You and your hate filled chums on RL fans might think RL is great in Wigan ( or wherever the other 40% live ;) ) just like they think cheese rolling is ace in Gloucester or bullfighting is great in Spain. Your opinion has been dismissed by me and dismissed by the rest of the world, toddle off back to the site where you all tell each other lies until you believe each other. After all this is a football site and before you say it,YOU were the one who came on here mouthing off about RL and slagging off your local football club. Stick to your own back yard, or at least attempt to come back with some facts to back up what you’ve said, you can’t lie your way out of it on here. Please remember that you have chosen to speak for the whole world here and not just the sad Latics haters from the small minded world you inhabit.

Best wishes
Scholes ;)

in reply to: brum game #24332

The Egg, Sorry I owe you an apology as I’ve just read that thread on RL fans and you were sticking up for Latics. You didn’t go far enough though and should have told the truth that Latics have 2000 more home fans than they do ( borrow my stats above ) AND more of them actually come from Wigan – 80% v 60%

A couple of other things I don’t get while I was on there, the rugby men have taken to calling us ‘skemeds’ implying our fans are all from Skem yet there is a lad on their called Scouse Pie who is ( according to his avatar ) “plotting the demise of Latics so that they can have the stadium all to themselves”. If you check them out, hardly anyone is from Wigan.

Oh and why is it when they give away free tickets or offer deals they all applaud their club and say “great idea”. Yet when we do it they take the piss out of us for it and say we’ve no fans and only get people watching us cos of thousands of freebies

Hypocrites the lot of them

But to return to topic, I don’t know which games they can use but they should definitely do a 3 for £30 or a 2 for £20 before the season ends if Latics want to boost crowds

in reply to: Going to watch the rugby #24329

When you see a game like that Wire v Wigan game you realise what real sport is like.
No primadonnas diving and looking for free kicks and penalties, no crowding the referee and swearing at him.
No cry babies when they get a hard tackle.(that’s a laugh)

Simply the greatest spectator sport in the world.

If it is the greatest spectator sport in the world, can you explain why no-one is interested in the game throughout the world save for those with a WA or WN postcode, parts of Yorkshire and a small corner of France, Australia and New Zealand?

I am intrigued as to how you can make a statement that something is the greatest spectator sport in the world when 99.9% of the world completely ignores it

Just another rugby liar I guess
I think he means value for money wise (which i’m sure was proven a number of years ago)
He should have said best value spectator sport in the world if he’d meant to say that then. He appears to have done a runner because ( unlike the rugby board ) telling lies gets challenged on here.

It might be the consensus view in the antiquated enclave of RLfans.com amidst the constant lies and deathwishes about Latics that RL is the greatest game, but outside this particularly parochial and insular group of hand wringers, the rest of the world barely acknowledges the sport

If it is proven to be such value for money/greatest spectator sport then surely EVERYONE in the country and the world would be playing and watching it. The residents of South Wales didnt think so, nor Paris, kent Invicta, Mansfield Marksmen, Gateshead and nearly every other failed venture the RL has tried to take the game outside of Lancs & Yorkshire pit village.

If someone can explain why this isn’t the case then I might be inclined to agree with the statement.

Come on Rogues Gallery, back up your statement and tell all us Latics fans what we’ve been missing

’Conroy wrote:Latics average around the same number of HOME fans as Wigan.’

‘With cheaper tickets, a better atmosphere because of the away fans, and also the fact that they are over achieving as a club, while we have been under achieving for quite some time.’

I think Conroy is showing which side his bread is buttered on there. Latics last season averaged 18000, including an average of around 3500 away fans = 14500 home fans – already higher than the rugby’s total average of 14000 but there must be on average around 1500 away fans when you think Saints bring 8000, Leeds, Bradford, Warrington, Hull Hull KR etc all bring between 1-2000 each, Wakefield, Castleford, Salford, Hudds etc bring 500 then you are looking at around 20k away fans throughout the season or 1500 per game which leaves 12500 home fans, so they are a good 2000 off and I’ve hardly exaggerated there.

The truth is much lower as they count every ticket sold whether they turn up or not and at £26 for kids season tickets a lot don’t. Plus the 5000 tickets they gave to Heinz bumped the average up by nearly 400.

I also like how they spin underachievement, they’ve been in many semi-finals over the years, anyone would think they’ve missed out on the play-offs for a decade.

Or fighting relegation for 5 years. Sorry doesnt happen in the farce of a non competition that is RL does it

Danny Shi-ttu

Does he still play for the Shi-tters up the road??

in reply to: Let’s boo them down #24188
Deehan was probably the most hated person ever to be involved with WAFC so how do we vent our anger and frustration. I openly admit to booing Deehan he was vile and in the end we got our wish and he was gone.

That is a ridiculous statement, he took us to a 4th division championship. Our first ever league honours. I remember the whole crowd on his back when he played 8 at the back at Walsall and he dropped a bollock at Blackburn in the FA Cup and picked cronies like Wayne Biggins and Andy Saville but to call him vile is a bit much. Just like Bob he was a rookie manager at the time. I might be wrong as I was pissed for most of the 80s and 90s ( and probably did boo him ) but if you want hate figures who genuinely either milked the club/run it down/threatened it’s existence or publicly derided it then I’ll give you these four for a kick off: Bill Kenyon, Freddie Pye, Bryan Hamilton & Maurice Lindsay and even two of those at least had good intentions at one point.

Probably worth a thread in it’s own right, who is the greatest hate figure. I’d rather save my hatred for the opposition players, fans, referees, the cretins from the local and national media or anyone who takes the name of the good ship Wigan Athletic in vain

in reply to: Instead #23935

So in summary Loudmouth you believe that Wigan Athletic’s rightful place is mid table nestled in just behind the likes of Villa, Spurs, Everton and City

I believe that given that we have one of the smallest transfer budgets in the division, the smallest crowds in the division, therefore the smallest gate reciepts, one of the poorest chairman, Kilby at Burnley is worth £4million, the rest are much welthier than Whelan, except perhaps at Pompey. Our current manager has inherited a squad which did finish in mid table a year ago but half of that team was sold off in January and the summer and a fraction of it put back in because Whelan is paying off debts because the club can’t sustain the outgoings. Well we aren’t doing too bad after five seasons

You clearly hate Roberto but don’t seem to offer any solutions as to who should be the manager, Mourinho, Van Gaal or Rijkaard perhaps?? and what miracles they should be expected to work under such tight financial restrictions. Maybe you’d like Steve Bruce back, I’m sure he could do a good job, maybe if we trebled his transfer budget and wage bill, gave him a £30m strike force and another 20,000 fans, he might have been…oh that’s right a whole two points further on than Roberto.

Seeing as you hate the manager so much to call him a tosser, and instead of repeating the same old diatribe over and over again on here while some of us are trying to support the club whilst recognising the situation we are in. I suggest you put your money where your mouth is and get down to Christopher Park along with Vat69 with your Martinez Out banner. Get yourself on Sky Sports. Sorry that you’ve given up, a football club is about ups and downs. It seems some on here have such delusions of grandeur that they seem to think Wigan Athletic is now too precious to suffer any downs any more and would rather spit their dummies than try and support the club to help them turn it around.

I respect your opinion and know I’m not going to change it, nor Tyldesley or any others of the dark side but your criticisms of Roberto seem to centre around the fact he has lost points, how many points did Steve Bruce lose from January last season? How many points did Jewell lose when we nearly got relegated. You are criticising him for going to Everton, Stoke and Sunderland and not winning?? That would be Everton with 120 years history now challenging for Europe, Stoke who can afford to spend £12m on Huth and Tuncay and Sunderland who are owned by a billionaire not a market stall owner done well? Get real, he’s not perfect and he’s making mistakes but he is probably the only manager we could afford. I don’t know whether he’ll turn it around but like it or not we are where we are, scrapping near the bottom with the clubs like Bolton, Blackburn, Hull, Burnley etc – all of whom are miles bigger than us in terms of infrastructure, history and fanbase and if the smallest club in the premier do manage to stay up it will be a real achievement, again.

in reply to: Instead #23829
Granted a good reply!!

That said, they are 4 games we’ve got somet from out of 13 we’ve played against top half/champions league challenging teams. That & the fact we’ve only won 1 league game in nigh on 3 months would indicate that at present we’re far more likely to get nowt from the Brum & Liverpool games than we are to get somet

Fairy nuff Tyldesley, I ain’t denying that we are in the s h i t. Well we’re not in the s h i t but we have been dangling perilously above it and it’s starting to whiff a bit. I just believe in looking forward to the next game rather than dwelling on the last one.

in reply to: Instead #23811
I do find it slightly amusing that despite the bilge that’s been served up so far this season that people think we’ll get decent results against top half/champions league qualification challengers like Brum & Liverpool

I find it slightly amusing that people think we cannot possibly get a result against top half/champions league qualification challengers when we already have got decent results against top half/champions league qualification challengers such as Villa, Chelsea, Fulham & Manchester City :?

in reply to: Instead #23781
So I mustn’t be a proper fan then?

you said that not me, clearly you are getting upset and confused

Get f*cked.

no thanks, and you are clearly possess little intellect if that’s the way you have to respond

Is St Andrews that much harder to go to than Stoke or Sunderland? Where we got a draw in both games and had chances to win both games? Liverpool hardly pulling up trees at minute. After that Bolton (A) and Burnley (H). Sounds like you actually want us to lose rather than believe we can get summat from these games. If you don’t think we’re going to get any more points this season then don’t bother coming again. You could go and stand outside Christopher Park instead with a SACK ROBERTO banner and we’ll all laugh at you when you’re red face pops up on Sky Sports. Otherwise grow up, put you’re dummy back in and learn to support a football club going through tough times
