We should also point out that Portsmouth only got 17k on at the weekend against Fulham who sold out their allocation (although it would have been less than 4k).

Now we have many top flight teams within however many miles, Portsmouth is right on the south coast with only Brighton and Southampton around them who are both in League 2 and League 1 respectively.

Bolton got 20k on against Sunderland and they had the whole stand behind the goal (around 7k – 2 tiers). I know there were a few empty seats but if you say there were around 6k there from Sunderland that leaves 14k from Bolton.

Same can be said about Blackburn, not sure what their official crowd was against City but it was announced on MOTD City had sold 7k tickets.

It’s not just us, although out of the teams mentioned we have arguably the worst fanbase.

In all fairness, the ‘fans’ who pick their games wouldn’t have looked at the fixture list and said “wolves at home, not gonna miss that one.”

It’s not a big draw, at home to Wolves.

We’ll more than likely see around 23k on Saturday although alot of them will be just going cos it’s Utd and some will be born and bred wiganers who call themselves Utd fans. The kind of people who make me angry and feel sick!

People who go to the football on a budget (tight bastards) will pick their games and i’m fairly sure none of them would choose Wolves, more along the lines of Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, etc.

Corluka is a right back/centre back.

Aaron Lennon is the danger man in midfield.

I think they’ll start well and die off a little after Christmas.

Chelsea will win the league with the top 4 being as per usual.

Spurs may do well but they’ll finish below City.

Ok’fools gold’…..Just to start you CANNOT say ‘Ben (never had a bad game’ Watson, beause he is not good and has never done anything good for us…he is a benchwarmer at most…. and also we may look forward to the journey and why shouldnt we…its another chapter in our clubs history and it is all to look forward to…were not going down (i would put ALL my money on that) so lets just see how it goes…..oh and ‘The egg’ I really dont think anybody on this thread got on Martinez’s back, not even Foolsgold

I’m going to have to reply to this!

Ben Watson has never done anything good for us?

I recall 2 very important things he has done for us………….

Scoring the winner at Sunderland last season. Ring any bells?

Also at home to Hull. He scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win. Ring any bells?

Ben Watson is a good player, not a world beater but a very good passer, good free kick taker, good penalty taker and a very composed and cool head on the ball. He is good going forward and good tracking back, he’s also still in his early 20’s.

Bobby obviously believes Browny can do a better job and I respect that but I think it’s a little harsh saying Watson’s never done anything good for us.

I thought we were very poor last night BUT it was only 1 game (or lets hope so). We were fantastic at Villa but I just hope last night was a one off and not the Villa performance.

If we play like that on Saturday we’ll be chasing shadows, if we play like we did at Villa we may get something from the game.

Last night:

Crowd was awful, ref was abysmal, our performance was worse!

Kirkland – 4 (Awful for their goal, no power on header)
Melchiot – 5
Bramble – 4
Scharner – 4 (Would have been a 2 but for a slight improvement in 2nd half)
Figueroa – 5
Thomas – 7 (Won some key tackles, never stopped for the full 90 mins and was my man of the match)
Brown – 4
N’Zogbia – 4
Gomez – 6 (Was marked very well by Wolves, given no time on ball and had 2 men on him every time he got it)
Koumas – 5 (Was slightly better than Zog but not good enough)
Rodallega – 4 (Looked lost, very poor but credit to Mancienne, he was immense!)

Subs:
Scotland – 6 (A couple of decent runs, a decent cross with no-one on end of it and nearly scored)
Sinclair – 4 (Did he enter the pitch? He went missing – rubbish!)

Roberto – 5 (I gave him a 10 at Villa Park but last night he had no plan B. He tried bringing on the extra striker but was still using the slow build up play from the back with less than 10 mins left when it hadn’t worked for the 80 mins before that).

Hope this was just a one off performance and judjing by that, we need a new centre back, centre mid, winger and striker.

Back to the Villa performance on Saturday please!

BTW, I booed at half time and left before full time. The reason for the boo’s was not directed at Roberto but at the players who are paid huge amounts of money to win football games and they put on the worse 1st half performance i’ve seen for a long time. My booing was aimed at the players to make them realise what we thought of their 1st half performance and I was hoping it would wake them up and start playing in the 2nd half but it didn’t happen. There were boo’s coming from all the stands (apart from the Wolves end) so it wasn’t just a small number. On my way back to my car after full time I heard the whistle, a loud cheer from the Wolves fans which was then drowned out by boo’s from the Wigan fans. I agree with the booing and just hope it makes Roberto and the players know what we thought of that particular game. My boo’s were also directed at the ref who was very poor. Bramble was lucky, from where I was stood (ES2) that looked a certain penalty! The ref was just awful on the whole, all in all, it was a dissapointing night!

We were awful last night but I don’t agree with booing! When things are going pair shaped we should get behind the team they ain’t going to play better if we crucify them every time they make a mistake.

I think we all agree footballers are over paid but thats not there fault if you were offered £25000 or more per week you’d take it, yes?
No…………….

Of course I would but i’d do what i’ve gotta do to earn it!

No-one last night earned their wage although at Villa they deserved every penny.

If losing last night proves to be a good thing (the way we react from it) then all will be forgotten. I would have give that loss last night to beat Man Utd on Saturday so let’s see.

I booed hoping it would make the players realise how bad they were. I have been supporting Wigan since I was too young to say Wigan so I don’t need to make an excuse for booing but as stated, it was to try and encourage the team to re-think their performance. I’m sure Bobby and Jonesy will be having a word!

Roll on Saturday!

Worst performance we’ll see for a while I think.

Just one of those games nothing falls for you.

You went 1-0 up early and went 110% defence for the rest of the game. The plan worked and you got the win but on another day we could have quite easily won the game with the chances we missed.

Gomez had a decent game along with Thomas. Bramble was awful, as was the majority of our team although I thought Koumas wasn’t as bad as others (such as N’Zogbia).

My personal opinion of your team and fans is that you’re a defensive team who tries to hold onto wins (will work against some teams, not against others – as you may have seen at Sunderland last night). You brought around 4,000 last night which is a good following (not even close to some of the followings we get at the DW from the away team) but for a Tuesday night it was good (although it was your 1st away game of the season). You were pretty quiet when singing compared to alot of teams in the PL and although you were 1-0 for the majority of the game apart from a few songs your support (in terms of volume) was pretty average.

Not as excited about the Utd game on Saturday now but I would have give a loss last night to beat them this weekend so lets just hope last night was a blip and it wasn’t the Villa game that was a one off!

I dont know what game you watched last night but to say this is pretty unbelievable
You went 1-0 up early and went 110% defence for the rest of the game. The plan worked and you got the win but on another day we could have quite easily won the game with the chances we missed

chances we missed ?

i dont recall the wolves goalkeeper making a save the whole match they out thought and out fought us all night they pushed us back and had 3 defenders on us every time we had the ball, and our players had no answer except to bramble hoofing diagonal balls straight into touch on at least 6 occasions, once again kumas was totally anonamous, something he has been in his whole time with us,brown did his one good game then back to mediocrity act, gomez despite plenty ball had no substance and thomas let the game go over his head,

the worse thing though when teams adopt that formation against a team like us who can only pass in front of the defence, someone has to do one of two things, run with the ball and take a defender out of position or make a clinical defence splitting pass to WILLING RUNNERS,the worry for me last night was martinez could not see this and we dont seem to have the personnel to implement it.
What I meant by it was the ‘chances’ we missed.

Let me point them out (apologies if I miss any):

Bramble – free header from corner, completely un-marked.
N’Zogbia – one on one with the keeper.
Scharner – 90th minute, one on one with keeper.
Sinclair – right at end, someone pointed this out to me, I must have already left.
Gomez – 2 shots deflected.

Was there more?

Still, there’s a few that we missed which we may have taken on another day but we didn’t create enough!

Still be a difficult game, they’ll come to the DW with 10 men behind the ball.

I’m confident of a win but don’t think it will be easy.

Lawro says 2-1 Wigan
Lew says 3-0 Wigan

so………… i’ll meet in the middle at 2-0 (Hugo with both).

Question, and this is serious.

Would YOU take a 3 year old child to the Wolves game?

I have deep reservations, due to the antics of some of their lot, as we walk past the away end after the game.

I’m thinking NOT. It’s a shame, as it will be his first game as a season ticket holder, and my first ever game was against Wolves. So for tradition sake, I’d like to. But in my mind of minds, I know it’s safer not to.

And he’ll probably be tired for a night match.

I remember when we played Wolves away in what was Division 1 at the time.

There was a lot of trouble but they didn’t target any kids, etc. I also believe it was Wigan who started the whole riot after the game.

Anyway, i’d say take him, doubt there’ll be much trouble unless you’re looking for it and i’m sure with a 3 year old lad that’ll be the last thing you want.

You never get trouble around the ground, remember we have the highest police officer fee in the prem or England?? (is that correct)??

Take him! ;)

My personal opinion on the whole Scharner rant is that it’s old news that’s been dug up from weeks or maybe months ago.

I’m not convinced that it’s something that’s happened recently although I could be wrong.

There’s an interview with Scharner on Latics Player regarding the Villa game and his own personal game playing in the back 4 and bringing the ball out from the back starting attacks. He seemed happy with the role and said there’s still room for improvement, was laughing away and being his usual self, didn’t seem unhappy in the slightest.

My personal view is that this ‘rant’ with Roberto happened a while ago (if at all) and the media/papers have only just got hold of it to print in the papers.

As for the signings, I think Roberto will be thinking along the lines of 1 or 2 players maybe leaving or if we pick up any injuries in the next couple of games. That wouldn’t be an ideal situation and obviously he would need cover/replacements for the departed or injured players.
