Watching Saturday’s MOTD* last night the commentator in the West Brom game said that Graham Dorrans was transfer-listed.
he scored a panful in my Dream league team a few yHars ago, Championship mind. Not a bad option, though.
* Lawro seemed very pleased with his “Wigan don’t start playing until the clock’s go forward” jibe, wasn’t he?
I heard that too and agree with you completely BUT I’m not sure centre mid is the position we really need to strengthen. Attack, wing and defence for me are the real worries. We look like we’re missing Kone (even more than I thought). Also, we lack width in attack. Yes, we have wing backs but no real pace on the wings when attacking. Something Moses and N’Zogbia gave us.
If it’s 100% correct that list is scary. We have (probably) the smallest squad in the league with 10 players contracts due to expire in the summer. That’s the most our of all premier league teams according to that list with Fulham and WBA having 9.
As for possible targets, 3 names stand out for me as being realistic and affordable.
1. Danny Simpson – Newcastle. RWB position filled as he’s been pushed out of the Newcastle team now.
2. Chris Baird – Fulham. Versitile and not used all the time at Fulham. Has a good shot on him too, scores from free kicks and whips in killer balls.
3. Jason Puncheon – Southampton. He’s been awesome for them recently and we are desperate for a left footed winger. Hasn’t always lived up to his potential and think he had some off the field problems but that looks to be behind him now. He’s been on loan to Blackpool previously so no stranger to life in the north.
If there’s the same level of effort we showed against them last week we won’t win. Boselli’s performance against Bournemouth last week was the worst I’ve ever seen in my time watching Wigan. And I’ve watched them long enough to see a lot of poor players.
Yes, we should win the game no matter what team is on the pitch BUT in these cup competitions we have to want it as much as the opponents. That’s the most important thing when playing against the lower league clubs, the quality should prevail in the end as long as we match them for enthusiasm and determination.
What if we don’t win tonight and get relegated? What if we win tonight, get to Wembley and survive? There’s lot of ifs and buts. Point is, we have a must win game tonight so it’s up to our manager to put a team out who will win the game.
In reply to jamesc I think it WOULD be a disaster if we went out of the FA Cup tonight.
This is the FA Cup we’re talking about here. A competition that is usually won by one of the elite of English football. The biggest cup competition for the English teams.
If we were to lose tonight that would be what, 3 seasons running we’ve been knocked out in the 3rd round?? Or 3 in the last 4 seasons? And all to lower league teams. Is it luck? Is it poor team selection?
This would be as well as losing to Bradford on penalties.
We’re not exactly setting the premier league on fire either this season so surely game time for the current first team and a win would help confidence? Just my opinion. It doesn’t effect anything though as we all know Bobby plays the reserves for cup games.
He had a few chances and looked short on confidence.
Noticed when he scored the goal he was chasing everything, really looked fired up so, here’s hoping he kicks on against Sunderland.
Boselli has had more than enough chances. He’s proved he’s not up to it. Bagged a brace at West Ham in the cup against some inexperienced defenders but couldn’t score against Bradford or Bournemouth. Also, noticed he didn’t step up to take a penalty against Bradford but that’s beside the point.
Unfortunately, as I’m sure you know we don’t have the cash to go out and buy a 20 goal a season striker. I as well as many others thought Kone could well be that man and we got him on the cheap but he’s not quite found his feet yet. Being away with the African Nations may do him good if he can bag a few goals but we’re left short up top.
I thought Bobby’s line up today was the best he could play and quite predictable so not sure what your argument is there? Maloney basically played up top with Franco and the first 25 minutes or so up to their goal we bossed the midfield. We created plenty chances and McArthur found himself forward numerous times, could have even bagged 2 goals in the opening 10 minutes.
Franco didn’t have the best of games but his work rate was second to none. He also scored an unbelievable goal. We should have won today. With a bit of luck and Mark Schwarzer not in such good form we would have got 3 points. Got to say take a bow Maynor too, Ronnie Stam almost cost us the point with some pathetic defending.
P.S. Looks like Ramis has done the cruciate knee ligaments. 5+ months on the sidelines.
May be a long shot here but I’m hoping recalling Dicko from his loan spell at Blackpool is to offer Palace on loan as part of a deal for Zaha.
Holloway has had both McMannaman and Dicko on loan in the past and we’ve dealt with Palace twice in the past (that I can remember) with deals for Watson and Moses.
Palace are doing really well so I’m sure there’s a few players worth looking at. The 2 that spring to mind though are Zaha and Glenn Murray.
It may however just be a case of adding extra cover to the strikers positions with it looking likely Kone will be going to the African Nations.
Defo Thursday. Club confirmed on official website today as there was a bit of confusion. Sky sports had it down as tomorrow.
Why’s there a sign in the window advertising half of Liverpool’s squad???? :P
Definitely a good idea for me. I’m in the east and the drum is key to the atmosphere. Not getting it started but keeping it going and also for the noise levels. The south stand needs something, the better the atmosphere the more people will keep coming back (although that’s mainly based on results more than anything). I’m all for it and would encourage him to go for it.
I’ll take any spares ;)
It was an awesome performance and to be fair, we have played like that for a few weeks now. We are proving that we are actually a really good side and apart from the Swansea performance we really have looked good for a few months.
I have to disagree with you though. Don’t see why the next 2 wins can only come against the lower teams at the end of the season?? We have just beat the champions! We can beat anybody! We went to anfield and won, should have beat chelsea but for some ridiculous decisions and the way we are playing we should go to arsenal with no fear. I agree 6 points may be enough but don’t see why we shouldn’t aim higher. With the confidence in the team and they way we’re playing, take our chance in front of goal and all 5 games are winnable.
Believe!
That makes sense now!
Anyway, tickets are on sale at the reebok tomorrow for those who haven’t got tickets.
Pay on the day should see a few more hundred there, repeat of Blackpool anyone? Here’s hoping!
If those rules still apply or clubs abide by them we should have had 2800 tickets on a sale or return for the Stoke game last season but we didn’t. The club released a statement saying they took a small allocation as they would have had to pay for the rest even if they didn’t sell.
We always take a reduced allocation of tickets for all away games.
Can you get into the east stand with a season ticket for the west stand? I’ve always wondered that!
