Err, what did “Holland 1970’s team” win?
I think that getting to two world cup finals is worthy of some merit, is it not?
Mr Brownbill definately stated “won nothing”. Afterall did Arsenal not get to a champions league final?
Yes they did, and not everybody manages that, do they.
That dirty Leeds team did. or it’s equivalent. Forest won 2 years on the bounce, Derby came close, Burnley got to the quarters, not bad for provincial teams.

It has got to be Roberts at Highbury, the drama of the match, penalty claims, penalty save, Van Persie, Henry, the Arsenal ole’s then the lofted ball, Scharner leaving it for Roberts to slot home, the run behind the nets, the celebrations under Highbury’s floodlights, then it hits you, that one moment, no penalties, we’d won!
You really needed to be there.
If my memory serves me well the reason the 85-86 side missed out on promotion was due to us selling Tony Kelly to Stoke. Im pretty sure he went after the then deadline day so could not play in any of Stokes remaing few games against teams that were either involved in promotion or relegation. We however had to play 4 sides out of the bottom six and fluffed it.I dont think many at the time could understand why we sold him so near the seasons end.I honestly believe that had he stayed promotion would have been a shoe-in.I don’t think he got on with Hamilton. I seem to remember him missing a penalty at Springfield Park, and I don’t think he played much after that. Stories reverberated around town of him throwing his boots at Hamilton. We spoke to him before the Plymouth game, I’m pretty sure he’d been dropped. His transfer to Stoke (who were playing a division higher)wasn’t long after. I have to agree, If we could have kept Tony Kelly, (and don’t forget Newell went to Luton before christmas, Aspinall had signed for Everton and was loaned back for the remainder of the season) we could of achieved promotion quite easily.
A twist to the thread.Would Pj,s title winning side have beaten the FRT winning side in which he played? Jewell,Newell,Methven, Walsh, Kelly,Langley and Lowe to name a few. What a side that was.
That was a fantastic side, with massive potential. Harry MacNally never got the recognition he deserved for assembling that side. If that team had stayed together for a couple of seasons, with maybe a couple of experienced signings, who knows? I feel it could have matched PJ’s far more expensive champions.
Looking at the sides (& I didn’t see the 1985 one in action – 2 years before my time) on paper I would say that the 2003 side was better as they absolutely walked away with the title whereas the 1985 side never got promoted. I would also say that the 1985 side has more lower division journeymen in it than the 2003 one (Knowles, Methven, Cribley, Tunks (who I always thought was $h!te), Barrow & Bennett). That said, there are players in the FRT side who I would have over their 2003 counterparts: Walsh over Breckin, Lowe over Teale, Newell over Roberts, Kelly over Dinning
But if you’re talking about value for money paid out then the 1985 side wins hands down
The 1985 side were assembled for next to nothing, and that was the beauty for fans at that time. Almost the entire side were cherry picked over 2 seasons. The financial status at the club then had a big bearing on the side not being promoted. Players like Butler, Newell, Jewell, Kelly, Walsh, Langley, Aspinall and the curley haired left pegger all went on to play at a higher level. We beat Reading, Derby and Plymouth at home. We seemed Invincible at Springfield Park. When we beat Plymouth at home I thought we’d cracked it. It was an all too brief but unforgettable summer. :(
Always amuses me about the “Miracle of Istanbul” in 2005.
So Liverpool go three goals down in the first half, but then “miraculously” and “with inspired play” pull three back in the second half and win on penalties.
This all against a team that shortly afterwards was implicated in 2006 in all sorts of dodgy dealings of match fixing – that had been going on for some time. Needless to add that Berlusconi was the club owner.
But somehow the final was whiter than white.
Yep. I believe that.
You have a point, GL ;)
And President Kennedy is still alive and well running America from a secret vault deep inside the whitehouse??

Any ways…any winter visitors feeding in your back garden? ;)
Do I know you from the GM Birding forum then? :)
Aye, orrell water parks my main thread. Good numbers of brambling around the feeders. :)
bitten on wigan flashes today ;)
We would’ve been better off there, instead of watching 11 turkeys at the DW.

Aye, Southampton were much the better side today, and much improved from earlier in the season. I still can’t understand why we don’t press for a second goal, but maybe I am taking credit away from Soton.
Any ways…any winter visitors feeding in your back garden? ;)Thank you, and no it isn’t. ;)
One-Nil. You win. Take the win gracefuly.
As graceful as Bernini’s Apollo and Daphne. :)
Thank you, and no it isn’t. ;)
Don’t believe all you hear, I think you’re being too presumptuous. You could be mistaking me for Arky. Concentrate on fact.
I’ve heard nothing. It’s just a very similar writing style, and I’m putting two and two together.
I wouldn’t confuse you for Arky unless you drink mild.
As someone has suggested to me, this same person has 57 varieties of different usernames.

As we are still able to sign players who are unattached to a club, is there any out there we know of that could be of use to us?Personally, I think we could maybe have brought in Steven Warnock from Villa, as he was available on a free. I think he would’ve been a decent addition to the squad. He’s gone to Leeds on a free.
As for out of contract players, I’ve scoured the PFA list and non actually jump out at me. Most are youngsters or lower league journey men.
Therefore we must look abroad. I wonder if Ricardo Quaresma is still available?
And suddenly Amr Zaki seems very appealing on a short-term deal.
Anybody any other names to throw into the hat?
Carl Grimshaw’s banging em in for fun at Charnock Richard fc.
