A few years ago on here some blokes posted photos on here posing as the Romanian Wigan Ath fan club. Was that for real or just an elaborate wind up?

I’m from Wigan but left 18 years ago when I was 18.

In 1985, when I was 9, a neighbour took me along to my first ever game – a cold Tuesday night FA Cup replay against Runcorn (4-0 win). But it was more an act of defiance against my Bolton and Man U supporting mates (I went to school in Bolton) and the novelty of being the only Wigan supporter in my school, than my love for what I saw that night that made me a Latics fan!

Since leaving Wigan I lived in the midlands for 5 years and been in London the last 13…but the defiance and novelty factor have not left me. I proudly wear my Wigan hat/scarf/shirt/accent around the capital and love the spectrum of looks and comments I receive.
It’s also helped me meet many other exiled London/Southern Latics who I’d never have otherwise met, including several who will be very close mates for life. Not an easy thing to do when you live in London.
Some of them are non-Wiganers with great stories of their own, e.g. the Leicester lad whose dad was a Wiganer and a long suffering Latics fan; the Hereford lad and separately the Putney lad who each basically closed their eyes and stuck a pin in the newspaper!

Thanks Doug – your last sentence has made it all clear now, as I saw that Mail article and got confused.
Trust Chelsea to potentially go and ruin the prize for either us or Millwall. Here’s hoping City get to the final then – good chance too if they’ve lost the title, and Chelsea are still banking on 4th and/or still in the Europa.

If Chelsea win the FA Cup but finish 5th, does the runner up still get into the Europa but has to navigate the qualifiers first?

If folk want to call each other up on their comments then let them waste their time doing it – why lock the thread just cos you find it tedious? There’s been other threads that have gone on for 3-4 pages with similar drivel, much worse insults and even multis just talking to themselves…yet they’ve not been locked.

And as for the pitch – the last time I watched a football match it was a pretty integral part of the game so any opinion on it ought to be on the football forum. What if I’d said I thought the extreme weather was to blame? Would that have to be posted on the non football forum?

                  It’s moderation gone mad.

Got to agree with horc and Dave on this. I don’t recall seeing 3 locked threads in 3 years never mind in one evening!
And all apparently because a particular topic that touches sone nerves has been covered enough and turned into petty bickering – by those rules 95% of the threads on here should be locked!

Just reread the actual rules which quite rightly says they are simple enough. There was nothing written as far as I could see that was bigoted or defamatory, in which case what’s not simple about just ignoring posts that rile you or that you’d rather not get involved in?

Nor did we play shite, nor were we poor.

Sluggish yes, wasteful maybe, but despite a lack of quality in the final third from both teams I was quite entertained by some of the end to end play. Thought we coped well in defence, won plenty of ball including corners and got the goal when it counted.

                      Big psychological result too:

                      – broke 30 point barrier
                      – 1st clean sheet at home
                      – win after international break
                      – out of bottom 3
                      – first striker since Henri Camara in 2005-6 to hit double figures (I think?)

My benchmark for this has never been based on who we have to play (time and time again it’s just too unpredictable), but what the ratio of results to losses is likely to be – and then hope, due to the unpredictability of who we play that we buck that ratio.

Year after year I’ve observed that the teams hovering above and below the relegation line typically win and draw a similar number of games, and combined that amounts to the same number of games that they lose.

As such, over 38 games that (conservatively) gives you 9 wins, 10 draws and 19 losses = 37 points (I always have more draws than wins if the number is odd)

With 9 games remaining, we should therefore (conservatively) expect to win 2, draw 2 and lose 5 = 8 points = 35 points
(I always have more losses if the number of games remaining is odd)

So 35 points is what we can realistically expect.
If we win our next game then it becomes 2 2 4 = 38
                          If we draw it becomes 2 2 4 = 36
                          If we lose it becomes 2 2 4 = 35

Only once that realistic benchmark is set can you really start to “analyse” the upcoming game and the chance of us bucking the trend.

                                Good post Lowey.

Have to agree that we should’ve killed the game off 3 or 4 times and Bob also said we wasted some good chances.

Must admit I was quite nervy in the run up to their goal – we seemed to revert to our “1 up, foot off the gas” mode, and lo and behold we gifted them with a goal. Bound to be nerves though when we’re trying to win our first game at home in yolks.

Thought we did very well to get back into it, with Di Santo giving us a bit more work rate up. Bout time we had some decisions go our way too!
