Either one’ll do for me – both would be a coup.
Robbing us methinks?
On £25k/week, yet was only being offered £12k/week at Celtic. Surely we could have had him for less – can’t imagine Boro were offering much more than £15k/week.
We will only stay where we are if we send Martinez the way we sent Hutchings. Hutchings was sacked for less.Sorry bobhead – time to go.
Err, wasn’t Hutchings was sacked for a run of 6 straight defeats? Have we lost 7 on the trot?
This doesn’t make sense – having just made two major sales and balanced the books, we should be in a decent financial position. So, how is it that we can no longer afford more than £4m for a player…yet when we were in a worse financial position pre Bob we spent £6m on Nzog, £5.5 on Koumas and Heskey, and offered £7m and £10m for Johnson and Owen?
Had the same thought my self John…sounds like Bob’s having his strings pulled:
– “Figueroa’s not for sale” – yet we’ve named a price, we’ll settle for at least £2m less and pay extortionate agent’s fees for the privilege of selling him
– “Our squad is light” – yet we’re letting go of 6 and probably only bringing in 3 (and I disagree with the point about having 6 that he can’t choose from…that’s crazy and any Prem manager worth his salt should be able to motivate and develop at least 50% of that number)
– “We’ve balanced the books and don’t need to sell” – yet we’re letting Fig go and can’t afford to pay Celtic up front for a badly needed striker
– “Seeing Amaya, McCarthy and Sinclair was like having 3 new players” – what? You can’t double count with players you’ve already got just because they haven’t featured until now.
Not holding my breadth this transfer window that’s for sure.
13 December 2009 at 4:16 am in reply to: I love my club more than this league. Does anyone else? #15143Wigan Athletic has a history , it doesnt include cup runs or promotions it doesnt include winning a place in the PL or all those honours we got as the best non league team ever to grace these shores. No our real history is people , from the word go we have people who have their hearts and souls into making Wigan Athletic into what we have today , from the owners and chairmen to the die hards , cleaners and tea ladies and for people to sit there and declare that the highest profile and highest league position that the club has ever enjoyed should be given up for a place in a lower league is an insult of the higest order to every person who has dedicated their lives into making Wigan Athletic live on.
You should be truely ashamed of yourselves.
It depends on whether you’re a person who relies on the club as a business or as an enjoyable past time.
If you need the club to be successful so you’ll be successful (as a chairman or a tea lady) then of course you want want it to be at the pinnacle of the industry.
If you care more about the entertainment and experience of (live) football, then being in the Prem is certainly not the best example for numerous different reasons. You must have missed my other posts colbob – I agree with you about this season being a transition.
Sarcasm’s never been my strong point :DBut colbob, we just can’t afford to wait until next season – having been here for almost 5 whole seasons that means we’re an established top tier side that must do better now ;)
Alansmith – I’ve been posting on here since 2001, just not under this username
I never said none of it was Martinez fault – just that sacking him is not the answer. I didn’t think he was the right appointment for us either, but in balance he’s bringing something exciting, different and workable…over time.
Current form (whilst inconsistent) suggests we won’t be relegated and hints at great things to come. Granted, if we’re in the bottom 3 and adrift at crimbo I’ll rethink my position – I just don’t think we need to panic now cos we win one then lose one and occasionally draw one (even with the amount of goals we’re shipping)To the other points…
Depleted in that he’d inherited team that had its spine ripped out over 6 months (Emile, LAV, Catts, Wilson, plus letting the likes of Brown and (dare I say it) Camara go).
Agree with you re: who we’ve bought – was implied by my point on buying proven premiership playersAgreed on Brown – Watson was hardly proven though
I’m not saying that the likes of Koumas and Kapo will turn things around, but on their day they are very good players. Our current tactic (partly as Roberto has no better options, partly still tactically naive at this level) is to bring on Gomez after 60min and Sinclair after 83, no matter what. We need to tap into what makes em tick (look at Koumas at the start of Hutchings and this season; Kapo’s substitute appearances last season), esp as out of most of the squad they are two who are suited to a passing game.
At £2m I wouldn’t call Martinez a cheap option. Actually, I think we were robbed, esp. when much more experienced heads like (I think at the time) Curbishley and Coppel were going for nout.
Yes, our passing game is flat, but you need to run before you can walk. We weren’t going to turn into Arsenal overnight. It’s about progression. As crazy as it sounds, the team needs to learn HOW to pass successfully, before taking greater and greater risks in moving forwards. Unfortunately, they have to take risks whilst learning which means they get caught out when things don’t work out.
Been saying that for the last couple of years – had Hutchings made Scharner captain rather than Melchiot we’d have played to the ambition he had when he first arrived and never have had the 6 monthly transfer talk. Making Catts captain ahead of him must have also grated.
You’ve just highlighted one of the biggest issues – no strength in depth/competition for the back 4. They’re all guaranteed a game every week so why should they try harder?
Another what 32? Spit it out.
I was very surprised to see us 5th and on £5m, esp. given how little of Whelan’s war chest has been spent on incoming players compared with other teams.
That must mean that we’ve had to pay agents fees for the sales of Palacios and Valencia, and would explain why, even after Whelan has siphoned off most for his retirement, we’ve hardly seen any cash from those sales spent this season.Unf**kingbelievable.
He can play a striker role and lord knows we’re short in that position. Bob has done well rejuvenating Koumas – why not Krapo?
