I remember that game at Bury. Leonard was wheeling away in celebration, then was like ‘oh oh!!!’ I’d forgot the ball actually went in though.
In my time as a fan, I’m finding it hard to pinpoint one game only. Leeds away, when we won 2-0 (Bullard and Mahon) was one of the first times I thought “hey, we really can do this!” (get to top flight) And we took about 4,000 there. (proper fans)
PNE away, won 4-2, when Roberts scored after 34 seconds, was also fantastic.
My first ever away game was Bolton at Burnden Park in 1987-88, in the League Cup. 3-2 down from the first leg, things didn’t look good when Jeff Chandler (I think) put them one up on the night. 4-2 down and their fans were loving it. Enter a certain Mr Bobby Campbell. He hit a hat-trick, the first a ‘Geoff Hurst 1966’ type, bouncing down off the bar, which the linesman gave. A thumping shot. 4-3. Game on. The second came from a header. 4-4. Then in the last minute, Paul Jewell also hit a bar-ground shot, the ball bounced up, and Campbell, with a bullet header, scored. He ended up in the back of the net with the ball. What a night that was! Still a massive highlight for me.
The Reading match, for the sheer realisation of our target, was fantastic. As was the atmosphere. I was a bit bitter at a lot of the ‘whoppers’ who suddenly climbed on the back of it (Still am) as we seemed to gain 9,000 extra fans overnight. I remember the people who went all over the pitch, some d-ick with no shirt on and a baldy head. Had he actually ever been before? I’d never seen him. Nor have I seen him since. Still, he got to have his 15 mins of fame, eh? The celebrations were good, but were invaded from 8pm onwards, by a load of people who had never given us the steam off their excrement, and then they started to suddenly act ‘Mr Wigan Athletic’. I went home at that point. Glad we’d got promoted, but disgusted that so many gob shytes had already started taking ‘pieces of the pie’. So a bitter-sweet day for me.
Loved the Leeds game, was amazing (dont think I would pinpoint it as one of my favourites, and was my first time at Elland road and was a bit disappointed, expected it to be better).. and the preston game was also a good game but took absolutely hours to get home after that one, remember the Radio on the way home raving about how it was the ‘Best debut someone has made for wigan athletic.
Dont think I was alive for some of the games you mentioned but the Reading game was a Key moment in the clubs history so obviously that has to be up there.
I cant help but think of the last game at highbury, it was just surreal, We was sat next to Paul Scharners Mum, Dad, Brother and Mum in the stadium after they came talking to us because I had Scharner on my back. As I was younger I went with my parents and remember getting offered like £1500 for our tickets (to which we obviously said no). It was just a very memorable game. I also saw Matt Lucas :DWe can separate the two camps here , the anti Dave Whelan brigade who have no business nous whatsoever , you can find these people stacking shelves , McDonalds , wharehouses etc
and have the usual workers v boss mentality. The pro Dave Whelan are people who have brains in their heads , company bosses and the higher end of the employment ladder , people who know what it takes to balance books and make a business work.
You know which camp you are in and you know im correct.
Just going to shoot your argument down a bit here. Im not at the ‘business’ end of the ladder and don’t work with balancing books etc etc, and I am also not anti-whelan (argument down the drain??).. I just think Whelan should shut up a bit more that’s all.
:)Ignoring the way that Bruce jumped ship (although I can’t blame him & if you think Bobby will do any less if a “bigger” club comes calling then you are living in cloud cuckoo land) & basing my decision solely on the tactics & consistant performances then its Steve Bruce hands down for me – so far.
For all you saying look at the mess Bobby inherited a) as someone else has pointed out I don’t think it was that much of a mess & b) look at the pile of chaotic situation Bruce inherited.
We hadn’t won in god knows how long, had no recognised left back & he turned players who were playing poorly before he came Bramble – in fact the whole back four, Kirkland, Valencia etc. into looking twice as good within weeks.
Within months Bobby has turned those players who were here under Bruce & playing well – Bramble, Boyce, Melchiot, Kirkland etc.. into (at times) as much use as a chocolate fire guardWas me who pointed that amazing fact out tyldesley, I voted Bobby because, generally I just like the guy and think he will be a good manager for us, but up to now he hasn’t proved himself to be the manager that Bruce was.

^^
Possibly the most awkward way to describe the goalscorers etc ever??as for finding out you can not sleep well its not difficult as you told are kid earlier in this thread and you said on the main board you had the piggy lurgy.ps you do know jim that the swine flu is man made in a laboratory some where, and if you get the jab then they have microchipped you. well thats what david icke reckons?..it is strange how no pigs seem to suffer with flu symptoms.then again with you been in your pit ill you will have time to google all this stuff?.its a scary world that we live in james?
Who’s David Icke?? Thought I had got rid of it to be honest but it’s just kinda come back and got worse. Bored shitless at home all day! :x
Bit harsh, Bruce had plenty of reason’s to leave and if you werent a Latics fan you would see that. He’s hardly left us with a chaos, imagine if there was no rodallega or N’zogbia, we WOULD be fkt. Still though my choice would have to be…Bobby, though his tactics sometimes baffle me (probably why I dont manage in the prem ;) )
Valencia is twice the player now at Utd than he was here at Wigan and has scored far more goals already. He is also getting assists in the Utd team and the fact is he’s playing with much better players under much better coaches. Charlie is playing better now than ever before! He is quality and in my opinion is doing better for us than Valencia ever did. What I do hope is he stays and doesn’t go in the summer although if a big club does come in for him I for one wouldn’t blame him leaving.Exactly as I said alex, I wouldn’t blame him but you would expect a player to show a little bit of commitment at some point for getting their career back on track, that lad can be at a world class team one day, just hope he stays here as long as possible!
So did it take you long to read where I said I had swine flu and either check the times of my posts or actually read it somewhere when I have said i cant sleep (maybe in earlier post) .. I also wasn’t mainmon BOB ON THE MOON :D
Me defo Charlie boy. Me and are Claude didnt even rate Valencia at New Springfield. He had half a good game in 9. Best bit of business ever selling him. Never got a cross in and sat too deep. Charlie is more exciting, finds our players and attacks.Agree with it all pal. N’zogbia is far better, of course Valencia has improved at Man Utd but N’zogbia’s better for us than Valencia was.
i did not think that the american east coast psychedelic sound would be your bag jim?. i need to stop having a go at you as well as my brother fil seems to think i have it in for you.if i do its only because i have it in my mind that you are latics mainmon.then again if that was you then hey so what.just do not get your self banned again.i hope your getting over your swine flu jim.that insomnia is evil as well i should know i got it ;)Haha very nice … :D
I just can’t win can I.
Slowly but surely, you get there.
By the time you/your alter ego turns 21, you might have it all boxed off[/quote]
I don’t have an alter ego and Im not waiting til November!!.. Seriously though I really dont know what He is moaning about there I posted nothing wrong! :x
Nice pointing out of something that you only mentioned because you saw someone else say something about my long sentences on one of my other posts, geoff.
Also I forgot to say, When Keane kept saying… If I was manager and I went into the changing room I wouldn’t even mention the handball, Bullsh*t, It would be the 1st thing he mentioned!
James, Jimmy, thank you for (re-) explaining yourself ina a clear and precise manner, I’m sure we all feel much better now we understand your previous post.Im not sure if your meaning to be sarcastic or not (guess is that you are), If you are then I really dont see why, you try to have a dig at me for something I said in a joking manner then start being sarcastic when I explain it. I just can’t win can I.
Mr James your reply does not make sense but then when I saw the time of it I thought ” Oh right ! “Haha I wasn’t drunk but was being lazy, haven’t been to sleep alll night, Can’t sleep as Im ill :( .. To elaborate i meant, In the video, is Liam the guitarist to the right?? and the smiley faces were in approval of the video :)
