Maybe 4-4-2 will come back into fashion
Spot on Leyland
Spot on Cup Winners, I’ll buy you a pint when you are next in the West Stand
I think SM must have ear plugs fitted !
He needs to throw them away and come and sit amongst the crowd; maybe near CW if there is a spare seat.
Otherwise there will be plenty spare seats next season. And one of our favourite centre forwards was in the crowd; Johnny Rogers, the first Latics player ever to score at Wembley !
We shook his hand
Starts to blame the pitch at the end of his post match interview today. Apparently it interferes with our passing and slows us down
Just watch the penalty shout on Kevin Sharp; on you tube.
Wonder what VAR would have made of that ? and the Goater hand !Agree with you CW, just wish SM would take our observations / criticism in a constructive way and review his formations and strategy. I seriously think we have some decent players; if only he would let them off the reigns and use them in the right way.
Take Friday as an example: we had two moments in the game when we had Burton panicking and that was when:
Charlie Hughes didn’t put his foot on the ball and point his finger; instead he immediately set of at a pace and ran past 3 Burton players before delivering a pass. Then Tommy P waltzed past 3 Burton players in a similar fashion. There was more excitement in those two moments than the rest of the game. Didn’t happen in the second half. How about David Lowe as Manager & Neil Rimmer as his No 2
Careful CW, you will upset the Happy Clappers in their rose tinted spectacles.
Said it weeks ago, that Maloney needs to realise that we are in League 1 and not LaLiga.
The overall standard in this league has been average to poor, this season; and we’ve failed to take anybody apart, except Bolton away. Apart from that game, I can’t recall a game with two good halves.I think this is the answer:
May 1999, our final game was Vs Chesterfield at Springfield Park.
Latics win 3-1, courtesy of Liddell (2) and McGibbon.
And then, onto our final ever game at Springfield in the first round of the play-offs against Man City. Ends in a 1-1 draw with Stuart Barlow scoring for the Latics
Then we have the second leg at Maine Road and “the hand of Goater” finishes us off !
Just watched the You Tube clip and can’t believe how that tackle on Sharpie wasn’t awarded a penalty.
There was no “keep the ball” and bore the pants off everyone in this game; by either side. However, do you remember this one
Play-offs were introduced in the 86/87 season.
Our Manager was Ray Mathias.
Our last game was Vs Brentford at Griffin Park.
We win 3-2 to sneek into the play-offs, courtesy of Lowe, Cribley and Knowles.
Then we flunk the two legged round against Swindon.
I think we were two up home and it ended 3-2 to Swindon. Absolute shock of a game.
Then we could only manage 0-0 away, and Swindon go onto promotion in the final.Roller coaster stuff from the Latics.
Good point, Bullitt !
Ah, remember it well and still got the Season Highlights DVDs !!!
Don’t think I’ll be adding to the DVD collection this year, if they dare to produce one.
Anyway, good times are just around the corner. As I posted some weeks ago.
I recall an early season interview with SM; probably after the good start against Derby & Bolton.
He said the first objective was to overcome the 8 point deduction and to reach mid table safety. When asked “what then ?” the response was “let’s just see how far we can take it”. So I don’t agree that the only thing in his mind was survival.
Maybe, Danson has told him to take the foot of the gas because he wants a progressive financial curve and not a vertical take off !After the Bolton game at Horwich, I wandered home in the sunshine thinking that if we keep up that type of performance we can easily reach the play offs. One swallow did make summer, because I can’t really think of any other memorable performance this season.
Okay, so next season we will really see what SM is made of. Damn well hope it’s more exciting than this season
Not sure what this possession football is trying to achieve. Take yesterday as an example:-
Wigan 70% possession, 13 shots, 5 on target.
Burton 30% possession, 15 shots, 4 on target.
So with over twice the amount of possession than Burton, we still allow them more shots.
That tells me that the theory of keeping the ball from the opposition doesn’t work. Had it not been for Sam Tickle, Burton would have done a smash and grab.
Shaun needs to get back to the drawing board before next season
