are these the same tactics that never saw us win in 9 games (may be wrong saying 9 correction if i am) and just about scrape a win against a very poor pompey side at the end of last season. And hes doing such a good job up at sunderland, they were 11pts clear of us at 1 stage this season i think its 2 now

is that the same very poor pompey side that we scraped a win against(as most people may remember it was a pretty comprehensive victory despite any scoreline, but why let fact get in the way of soundbites),
or is the even worse pompey side that stuffed us 4-0 this season ?
and as i remember they should have scored more.

Dunno to be honest I didn’t read any of the threads posted since my last post yesterday
But if you did say that then yes I agree with you!!

and i with you as well

Someone earlier in the thread has pointed out that Martinez is stuck with some of the $h!te Jewell & Hutchings signed & then has Bruce’s dodgy ones too.
Sorry but that particular point doesn’t stand up to scrutiny

It applies to the squad members who don’t get a sniff of first team action these days & who some we have since shipped out: Kapo, Bouaouzan??, De Ridder, King, Watson etc… and I guess that you could argue they take up valuable space on the budget so Bobby might not have been able to bring in everyone he needs but of those who actually get regular game time lets really look at the “$h!t” he’s been left with:
Kirkland, Melchiot, Figueroa, Boyce, Bramble, N’Zogbia, Scharner, Rodallega – That’s 8 players signed by previous managers. 4 of whom are rumoured big money transfer targets for other clubs so they really are a pile of $h!te aren’t they??? Of the remaining 4 all have looked good under previous managers & now look shadows of their former selves under Bobby
Scotland, Gomez, Diame, Thomas, McCarthy – all signed by Bobby. As pointed out elsewhere Thomas isn’t really a Bobby signing & to be frank blows hot & cold anyway. Scotland & Gomez in no way shape or form look good enough for the top flight. McCarthy looks promising so far but so did Watson after his first couple of games. Which leaves Diame who looks pretty good

To me that looks more like a manager inheritting a decent first XI making them perform worse (for the most part), adding a bit more rubbish to the squad & adding a decent player or 2

    isn’t that what i said ?

now lets look at the managerial records

bruce’s first game in charge was 1st of dec 2007 v man city and within 5 mins city had scored through a bramble boo boo,in the next 6 games – with the previous managers players we conceeded 11 goals,
then the transfer window opened and bruce brought in some of his own men, including some of the “dodgy signings”, in the next 21 league and cup games we had 17 goals scored against us including 10 clean sheets,we played all the top 8 teams in that time and chelsea twice (fa cup once) we also got our first ever points against a top 4 team liverpool, and went on to draw at chelsea and arsenal at home,he kept us up (his brief) quite easily,so under bruce it was 28 goals conceded 27 games thats an ave of 1.037 per game.

the following season league only, as we all know it was 45 goals in 38 (1.18 per game)games but we were never ever mentioned in the relegation dog fight

now martinez’s record is 49 goals against in 22 league and cup games, thats 2.227 per game !!!!

martinez has also had the benifit of some of his own men and the defence that only conceded 73 goals in 59 games over a season and a half thats about two thirds of the total with a full year to go.

so on the defensive front now as well as transfer dealings martinez is losing ground, but then again im only quoting statistics,

please you clever types dont quote mark twain or benjamin disraeli at me,

no doubt the response from the believers camp will be the pleasure in watching the pretty stuff from spain as opposed to the dour stuff served up under bruce ,but that one has been aired many times before and will probably be done again before the season is out.

in reply to: Bobby or Brucey? #19000

i will try to explain myself

out of the signings that arrived at wigan in the summer, henry thomas was already a done deal so he isnt one of martinez’s and is irrelevent in this debate

    SCOTLAND and GOMEZ are useless,
amaya and sinclair are that good he never plays either, and the rumour mill says that we will use amaya as a trade in for another sub standard championship signing,

    that leaves mccarthy and diame,
now these may or may not turn out to be good signings as i said before,i cant make a judgement about mccarthy as i have only seen him live for 20 mins v manure, but he is another speculative buy just as watson was with bruce, good young prospect with a good pedigree and goal scoring record in another league – but it now seems that watson may not be up to the job, so who knows if mccarthy will be.

diame looks the part at times but he is still part of a midfield that does not protect its back four , i might add a defensive set up that has shipped the most goals in the premiership this season, plus going foward i dont think he has had one defence splitting pass , an assist for a goal or scored so far this season, so can someone please explain what it is he is so good at?
this is the reason i have not passed judgement on diame he looks okay but the stats on him point in a different direction and i cant quite put my finger on why.

so thats 6 signings that martinez has made + henry thomas and not one of them you would say we will double or quadruple the fee we paid for in actual fact in the case of scotland and gomez we wouldnt get half the fee back if they were to be sold now.

nzogbia, rodellega, figueroa, cattermole, palacious, all signings by bruce more than made up for some so called “dodgy signings” and up to now the fact martinez has done half as well on the transfer front alone doesn’t quite stack up.

    does that explain it ?

been a while since i heard this one, west brom away ont tuesday night wen the duke got loads of abuse i think it was.went summat like,`lee hughes,is a murderer`,nice few choruses of that should do nicely for a warm up.

ellington was a wigan player when we went to wba on that tuesday night when hughes got the abuse ,and that was in the championship,
when ellington got that stick it was a saturday afternoon, greening put them one up and ellingtons replacement david connolly equalised, then bullard scored the late winner, that was the defining moment of that first season,we went on the run that kept us in the division from there and west brom never recovered despite it being only the third or fourth game of the season,it was also the begining of the end of ellington at west brom.

its not davey breen i dont think – but are you serious about being the one with the big tach and scarf – because i know him and the 2 lads to his right but i cant for the life of me think of there names.

ernie do you know what event that was celebrating ?

in reply to: Bobby or Brucey? #18909

who are the good signings martinez has made ?

scotland and gomez are useless – sinclair is that good he never plays him, amaya never seen and reports now that he will be offered for another chump from swansea – henry was already a done deal ,time will tell how good the other 2 mccarthy and diame turn out so thats 2 that may or may not turn out to be good signings.

not a good record so far

in reply to: Valencia or N’Zogbia #18856

down side with nzogbia is he doesnt get back and cover the same as or as well valencia,so melchiot has been more exposed and it has shown his frailties up more, but he has given us more going foward this season than valencia, and on the same note valencia seems to have given manure more than he gave us.

You’re both wrong. Zaki crossed Bruce at least 3 times before he finally fecked him off.

    John chapter 8 verse 7 :-
He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone

come on john how many times did you cross british telecom during your working career, and how many times did you skive off to go fishing on june 15th ?

in reply to: Not at a club, anybody wonder why?? #18680

    Loudmouth

For once, I actually agree with you 100%.

I rated Bruce as a manager, but I think he is the type of bloke that once you’ve crossed him, you’ll never get back in favour. Martinez is completely different.

We’ve put an offer in for Boyd at Rangers, when we’ve just signed Caldwell. Boyd isn’t coming: those two can’t stand each other!

So, as an alternative, I would have a well managed Zaki back anyday, but I don’t think Whelan would.

fec me standish griff accused me of mellowing !!

one win and its turning into a hippy style love-in.

in reply to: Full debut scorers #18671

    Soz.
How about players scoring on both home and away league debuts?
    BTW there aren’t many

Lets hope James McCarthy becomes the first at Blackburn.[/quote]

didnt james mccarthy make his HOME league debut as a seconfd half substitute in the 0-5 home defeat to manure.

and blackburn is again away so it would be 2 away goals wouldnt it,his first against hull was the cup game.
