All from a minority but it does happen and to claim otherwise is burying your head in the sand

Yes I have heard racist chants and yes it needs to be 100% stamped out for sure so for your remark on bury my head in the sand ? your talking sh1te.
I was just interested as to what LMB said about our own fans racially abusing our own players, I’ll ask for your permission next time hey.
You asked about racist songs aimed at our players, I never said at any time there had been racist songs. I will give you one example that made me ashamed, it was a tirade of racial abuse last season against Gavin Massey when he was having a bad game from a group sat not too far from us, this group included people we know personally and they are not kids.

I may say something that many won’t like here, though what’s new, before we start being horrified at what this piece of sh1t has done we need to look at our own and call it out and fight it when ever scum like this raise their heads.

Both myself and wife have been physically threatened and ridiculed at away games by our own fans because we have dared to challenge those who think racist chants are acceptable, when you look round you see smirks of laughter or people avoiding your gaze with a don’t involve me look.

Until we all stand up and challenge racism in all forms not just when it’s a footballer or someone famous who is the victim, it will not stop.

ps Can I add that some of those racists rants have been aimed at our own players because they were having a bad game or just not up to it.

I was and still am one of Martinez’s biggest fans.

I rarely come on here these days because, to be honest with you, I can’t be bothered arguing the same toss over and over again about why we don’t play 2 up top, proper wingers, why are we not buying X and Y, etc.

Plus, these days I’m coaching my youngest son’s rugby team (‘proper’ rugby I hasten to add) so that plus the other sports he and his brother are playing at the moment make time a scarce commodity and therefore I’ve not been to a single away game this season.

Not a bad thing though, as they’ve been poor of late.

But, I still don’t see us as a longball team. Yes, we’ve been very direct in some games, and it’s a lot more direct than when Martinez was in charge, but it’s hardly a case of bypassing midfield – other than the game on Saturday, which was a case of needs must.

It certainly wasn’t long ball last season.

Plus, didn’t Cook say all our best performances were when Grigg was in the team, but without Powell, Jacobs and Massey, Grigg wouldn’t get the service he needed, which is why he didn’t play?

That’s hardly freezing him out.

The Sunderland lot are already saying he looks like a player who needs service as he’s hardly going to bully defenders or create his own chances.

And I know Cook definitely didn’t want to sell him, but the decision was taken out of his hands.

I refer you to my answer to Garswood, it is nothing about Martinez it is more about what I see as the purist football snobbery that the stuff we played under Bruce could be dismissed, I often read many on here describe it like watching ‘tennis’.

On a few occasions under Martinez some of the stuff we played was stunning and a joy to watch, but that was when we moved it quickly and ran at teams, not the constant side ways and backwards stuff until we were forced into errors like we usually saw, as I tried to say before this is not an attack on Martinez in anyway, I was one of the original ‘darksiders’, but he did finally win me over, but it is more a defence of Bruce and how his detractors seem not to have anything to say about the stuff we are playing under Cook

In answer to the original question: because under Martinez we were in the Premier League. Hoofing it forward would just give the ball to the opposition who would then come back at us wave after wave. Our problem was that we didn’t have players who were fully able to play the ball out with neat passing. Hence we struggled.

Now we certainly don’t have players who can play neat passing movements, and we have seen some disastrous moments already where we are caught in possession or misplace passes at the back. Hoofing on occasion at this level doesn’t mean the opposition will gain control necessarily, and is often the best option to clear the lines.

The very simple answer then is that we are playing at a different level, with a different class of player (even taking account my criticism of the PL players’ ability), and so a different style is needed.

George my original post is nothing to do with how we played football under martinez, the quality of players or what division we were in it was about those, mainly vociferous, fans of his who looked down their noses at the stuff Steve Bruce played and those that dared to say they enjoyed it and preferred it to Martinez’s tippy tappy philosophy.

Recently talk turned to the possibility of Cook being sacked and who should replace him and when Bruce was suggested the hoof ball accusations came back among other issues, what I intended in my first post and was attempting to say is how are the ones who were the most ‘vociferous’ critics on the Bruce style dealing with this utter hoof ball garbage Cook is serving up now, they are quite conspicuous by their absence. I also cannot agree that this is only an away problem our play at home is also the same, maybe not as much, but still obvious, I think many are disregarding it with the relief of a few wins.

I am an avid reader of away fans forums before and after games to see if I can get a balanced opinion of games, as we all tend to see only what we want in games and are bias to our own, which is natural, but I can assure you one thing opposing fans have consensus and are in agreement over our hoof ball play.

jimmy I don’t get to any weekend away days any more due to working Saturday evenings but I subscribe to the Latics player channel and see games every week, there have been some really inept performances away this season but Saturday was a lesson in the john beck school of football it was truly awful and in my opinion everything I do not want to watch when I go to a match, it may have been compounded because Rotherham were the same.

Wonder if they go ahead with the fans forum after this crock of s h i t !

in reply to: Will Grigg Rumour #175632
I agree you pick your best XI but you pick your best XI based on the tactics and style of play you are looking to play.

As we have no wingers and are playing more direct, Grigg isn’t our best striker for that role.

I’d like to see him play iff of Vaughan or Garner though as I’ve said before.

cook doesn’t seam to have a problem playing Windass close to Garner in a sort of two up front role yet won’t do the same with Grigg who is twice the player Windass is.

in reply to: Will Grigg Rumour #175247
Why would Cookie be so adamant Grigg is staying if there is a real chance of him going?. Surely it would make the gaffer look like an idiot. We,ve had it all before will Powell and he is still here and I fully expect Will to be here in February. We may have recalled Cole simply because he isn’t getting a run at Burton.

The word coming out of Burton is Clough has sent Cole back for one reason or another, but the rumours are poor attitude, and the recall announcement is to save face.

in reply to: The silence is deafening #173483

Windass did two things differently today, he played closer to Vaughan who won nearly every header and got the ball, he also played more like Grigg, he ran the channels excellently and dragged Blackburn defenders out of position, he also closed them down forcing them to knock long balls which was food and drink to our excellent defence.

Windass had a more free role aka Powell tonight playing off Vaughan and it worked very well and suited them both.

Just got back home.

Morsy’s challenge was a clear red, he led with his arm. Yes, the Brentford lad had been niggling all game, but Morsy’s a professional and international, team captain, he should be able to take that.
I know what I saw. As did everyone round me.
Straight red every day of the week.
Seems that the Fa didn’t see what “you and everyone around you saw”, including the referee as his report would have been the major factor in the red being rescinded.

We can compare it to grounds like Leigh and Widnes instead though if you like where they have failed to sell allocations for cup semi finals?

Why not compare it like-for-like (ie an away league fixture at a local rival)? I note you chose not to compare it to the Saints V Wigan league game last month when well over 3000 made the trip across the hill.

Or better still, don’t bring another sport into the thread just to try and score points.
Yes lets compare like for like, how many tics travelled to Doncaster on the last two occasions to watch league games against how many you eggs took to the same ground for your big cup semi final.

in reply to: North End Away. #171757
No they didnt mutty lad 1,800 take took

Simmpool, how dare you let facts get in the way of an eggchasers fantasy.

If the pr**k wants to compare like for like, he can perhaps look at how many we took to Doncaster on our last two visits for league games and how many eggies made the trip to the same ground for the Challenge Cup Semi Final.

in reply to: Nick Powell #171456
What is the club supposed to do though?
I’ve no doubt that the club has spoken to him about a new contract & he’s either indicated that he’s not interested or said that he is & discussions are ongoing but not certain.

If there’s any indication that Powell won’t sign then the club has to listen to offers – at the moment we have an asset that (if on a long term contract) is worth £10mill-£15mill in today’s insane market
However, with less than a season to go on his contract, if he has indicated that he won’t sign a new one then the club has to make a decision about whether to lose that asset for nothing or lose it for the alleged £5mill that some clubs are offering now.
Takeover or not, Latics aren’t in a position to turn their nose up at £5mill club no matter who that player is

I will ask you what I posted above, what if Powell refuses to leave, what can WAFC do about it.

in reply to: Nick Powell #171422

What Powell does may not have anything to do with Latics, if he refuses to leave and exercise his option to leave on a free next summer there isn’t much we can do about it, he may feel we signed him on a free why should we get anything in return, if that happens he can choose himself where he wants to play not just to the team paying the biggest transfer fee.
