Happily Whelan is far more savvier than his trigger-happy early days in charge and is rightly appearing to back his manager. Brighton’s keeper was man of the match last Tuesday and Wigan were cursed not to be comfortably ahead at half-time on Friday night. I thought both those team performances were of a similar quality to many I witnessed under Rosler last season that saw us climb the table quickly, I’m sure the results will improve very soon.
Like everyone else there are aspects of Uwe’s team selection that I find baffling, in particular I don’t think the ever-willing Espinoza has the finesse to play in an attacking-midfield position.

I suspect that was Brendan O’Connell.

Doesn’t every discussion about our worst ever signing come with the caveat, “worst signing ever, after Marlon King”?

Some of the keepers listed on here have all made high profile mistakes recently. Schwarzer conceded from approximately 40 yards v Tottenham last week, Mignolet was badly at fault for WBA’s 2nd goal, Howard was castigated by Evertonians for not coming for a cross when Norwich equalised at Goodison Park, Krul gifted Southampton their first goal with a poor clearance, Cech was poor for Juve’s 3rd goal in Turin and Hart had a poor night against Switzerland. It’s the nature of the position Gents, Ali has been consistently excellent for Latics since he came here and we’re lucky to have him. I’m pretty sure that all keepers after making a mistake will come under criticism from a number of negative after-timers, the like of which follow all teams, we’re certainly no different in that regard.

All of these keepers may have made mistakes. So has Ali (Twice recently). It doesn’t change an opinion. Mistakes aside, my top 5 still stand. Just because they made mistakes ASWELL as Ali doesn’t mean Ali is better. The only point you are making is that keepers make mistakes, we all know that, and although Ali is a good keeper, there are still numerous better keepers in the league than Ali.
It might be worth pointing out that this is a public forum and therefore not every post is written directly with you in mind. Ali’s performances are now under greater scrutiny than they were a month ago because of his recent errors. A consequence of Ali’s gaffs could be this thread as well as the increased traffic on the other thread on this board about him. I was trying to point out that most of the keepers perceived to be the best in the league have all made mistakes of their own recently. Therefore a sense of perspective might be a good idea and tomorrow we should all get behind somebody who has been very good for us.

The standing of player’s and manager’s change so quickly, given that I wouldn’t expect Martinez’d position to come under review should we get relegated it appears to be a futile question.

Don’t forget Blackpool’s great passing game, fear of nobody, rattling points up game after game and were did they end up?

When will some of you finally realise that the season doesn’t end in January! B)

Fair point, but when was the last time we looked that good against a top Premiership side and had the stadium rocking???
I hope you know it was 1-1. We looked very good against a top premiership side and the stadium was rocking.

Ridiculous, arrogant sacking. Thankfully our chairman and manager don’t have a similar disregard for loyalty.

Have to say I was peeking through my fingers when Martinez decided to use Ben based on his last miss and the Boselli penalty experience last season. I was also surprised the ref allowed the sub before the pen.

Thankfully Ben also confirmed how 5hite Boselli was – £6m yet he couldn’t even put the ball in the net from a spot kick.

Lionel Messi has missed three penalties in the last two seasons for Barcelona, did Watson confirm how shite he is as well?

I’m not even sure Jordi splits opinions, I feel that the majority of Latics fans despair at gents like truelatic4eva who are determined to be negative about certain players (and management) regardless of what happens infront of them.

Quite an interesting article in today’s Independent. It seems some Chairmen are finally realising that sacking a Manager is usually counter-productive. Happily Whelan is now one of them.

The Dali reference gives us a tantalising glimpse into a mind that is perhaps best described as ‘creative’. The appetite is truly whetted, surely we are due another song?

I remember when Peter Kennedy was the favourite son of the JJB’s negativado’s, he played in a team that got 100 points, it is not just since we got to the Prem that some fans have failed miserably to manage their expectations.

i seem to remember the ‘lightside’ claiming this was one of the reasons he should not be sacked in the past 2 seasons plus the fact “he bleeds blue and white blood” or “he loves wigan

i would have thought that if his passionate love affair with WAFC was ever true, he would not be even talking to aston villa now.
seems now even if he stays – that he is just the same as any other footballer/manager.
If you’d have got your way Bob would have been sacked during last season and we would probably now be in the Championship. Happily Whelan is a far better judge, who sadly might be receiving some compensation in the next few days.

If Bob stays he will have turned down a bigger club that would have paid him more, I can’t think of many people who have played or managed Wigan who have done that. If he goes, then yes, he is no different to lots of others who have left us to further their careers.
