I never said Bruce was responsible for signing any journeymen. He just happened to be the last manager to preside over the policy at that time of signing established players, journeymen maybe, on high salaries and long contracts.
All those players you mention could arguably be classed as journeymen but they weren’t on the same kind of salaries as the likes of Marlon King, Kirkland, Bramble and Heskey were reputed to be.You have proved with this post exactly what I am talking about, blame Bruce for everything – if you knew anything about your own club you would realise Bruce only signed one of those 4 players you mention that’s a 25% success rate which in most fields represents failure but not on this board where that win rate is revered.
You seem to have adopted some kind of irrational desire to defend Bruce against allegations that haven’t actually been made. Where exactly have I said that Bruce was responsible for signing any of those four players?
Marlon King was a panic buy of monumental proportions. Bruce had £5m burning a hole in his pocket come the end of that January transfer window and King was the best he could muster.
de Ridder I have some sympathy for. At least I thought he tried.
Kapo never ever, wanted to come and play for us and it showed.
I’m sure his bank balance didn’t suffer in the same way we did.Yes, all great signings……!
When Bruce left and was replaced with Martinez it heralded a change in direction for the club. Out went the policy of signing established players and journeymen on inflated wages and in came the philosphy of bringing younger players to the club and the promise of an academy to further this development.
I can’t believe Whelan will go back to the previous regime under Bruce even if he may have put the academy on hold pending a return to the Premiership. And I can’t believe Bruce would want to work under the current structure and financial restraints which, if the stories are to be believed, was the reason he left us back in 2009.
Who were these journeymen that bruce signed ?
I suppose caldwell, scharner, scotland, david jones, alcaraz and kone are not journey men are they ?
I can’t see why Bruce would want to drop down to the Championship having just got himself back into the Premier LeagueMaybe Bruce has been refused the finacial backing he considers necessary to survive in the Premiership and is about to spit his dummy out and maybe he’s been offered a better deal to come here?
Dave has spoken. He a kind of septuagenarian Russell Brand!
As far as I understand it, Bobby remains manager of Wigan Athletic, but has told DW he wants to leave, DW will let him leave so long as he gets compensated for it, simples.Which leads me to believe that Martinez already has a job to go to and that they are willing to pay compensation.
I think in the Cup games they were told to go out and enjoy themselves instead of playing to the rigid game plan of Premier League games.I didn’t notice any difference in our approach or the way we played in cup matches over league games. The difference was we got lucky against Bournemouth and Macclesfield and managed not to make any monumental cock-ups in the others.
You can never be sure what the situation might be and whether Whelan is telling the full story, which I suspect he’s not.
I can only assume Everton gave United permission to talk to Moyes, which means Everton must also have been on the look out for a new manager whilst the season was still in progress. If Whelan only gave Everton permission to speak to Martinez after he stated he was leaving then that’s one mightily brave decision by him. Of course I don’t think that was the case and believe he was sounded out and more or less given the nod by Everton. All this talk of there being other candidates is just a smoke screen to deflect from the fact that Everton made an illegal approach, assuming Whelan is being open and honest about it all, which I don’t doubt for one minute he is…… honest!
I think it’s ridiculous that we’ve not even been told who’s applied for the job. Typical of Whelan and the club to let the fans down by causing all this speculation when really all we want to know is who the next manager is going to be! And us fans should be first to know, not Sky, BBC, newspapers etc.
Bloody rubbish Wigan!
It’s Owen Coyle’s name in there that bothers me!
Jeezus. Nothing as scathing as a Latics fan scorned, eh..!
I’ll hold comment until the reasons for him leaving are made known. Maybe Whelan couldn’t delivery what Martinez wanted that would make him stay.
On a similar topic.
