Yeah very sustainable, That’s why we can’t pay transfer fee’s for anyone and keep selling any player on any kind od decent wage. All those hundreds of millions that were made and now all of a sudden wages can no longer be paid.
:- I said Dave Whelan would walk if Latics weren’t promoted within the parachute payments and every asset will be sold – I was right
:- I said the club would end up in a far worse state than when he arrived, it’s starting to look as if i am right.
:- When it becomes obvious that David Sharpe can’t get the club back Granddad will tell him to take what he can and walk
:- Wigan Athletic will eventually get to the stage where they can’t afford the rent and will eventually get kicked out of the stadium. Anyone who thinks this isn’t possible because Uncle Dave said they will always play there, long term lease etc blah blah. He has never screwed any business over that doesn’t turn a profit has he?
:- Ground sharing at Leigh Sports Village looking forward to local derbies with FC United and Stockport.
I presume you’re fishing Yosser, but I’ll humour you and bite:
- Yes is it very sustainable. You buy young players, develop them, and sell them on for a profit. It’s how Crewe and to a lesser extent, Middlesbrough have operated for years. If/when the new training ground and academy is finished, this can be used as a farm for young players as we simply do not have the resources to buy a new squad every season.
- When have wages not been paid? I think you’re confusing Wigan with someone like Leeds or Portsmouth who were poorly financially managed.
- The hundreds of millions have gone on the running of the club, servicing debts, and paying players’ wages (all of which available to read the club’s published accounts)
- Whelan walked because of his monumental cock-up in appointing and attempting to support Mackay. Nothing to do with not winning promotion.
- Whelan hasn’t made a profit from the club. What he got from his association with the club was the chance to get in front of the TV cameras at the drop of a hat, and once he’d made himself look silly and nobody wanted his views anymore, that’s when he decided to quietly slip away into the background.
- And if he has left with parachute payments, no wonder all those players left in January because they obviously weren’t being paid.
- In what way is the club in a worse state than when he arrived? I am genuinely baffled by that statement.
- How is David Sharpe supposed to ‘get the club back’? He’s not the manager, nor a player. He’ll be going nowhere as buyers aren’t exactly queuing up and there’s too much Whelan money invested into the club to merely walk away.
- Do Wigan Athletic actually pay rent? I’m sure they don’t pay anything for using the stadium. The stadium is owned by the Whelan family so why would they throw the football club out while they still own both? If the club is ever sold, they will invariably include the stadium within that sale.
A good number of the Swansea squad that won promotion under Martinez were also around when promotion to the PL was achieved, which sort of proves my point.Which would suggest to me that it can be achieved with young, malleable players rather than the battle-hardened old pros that Coyle and Mackay seemed to prefer.
I thought it was a nice gesture that both he and Graeme Jones were going to play in (called off) charity match last Friday in Ashton.
For a couple of ‘Judases’ they still hold a lot of respect from people within the club, and it’s good to see that they both still live in the area.
He was a decent League One/Championship striker but didn’t cut it in the Prem, simple as!Correct.
But one up front doesn’t work, full stop – according to Donny.
I reckon that in League One you have to hit the ground running and get up with the leading pack, I have noticed the last few seasons that whoever is in say the top 8 come the end of September is usually thereabouts come the final curtain! This was the case last season with all 6 top sides being in the top 8 at the end of September! We need to get a firm foothold early doors and send out a message that we are not done for yet!
Not a chance fil unless we change formation. And I’m really confident that is all it will take coz we still have enough quality in the squad if only the hierarchy accept that the way we tried to play in the greedy league does not cut it in the football league. Go back to basics and I would really fancy us to be up there. Holt and Waghorn could be real assets if we go 2 up top in this league. Onward and upward if GC gets it right.
How do you know ‘it does not cut it in the footbal league’? We haven’t tried it!The second Coyle was appointed we started lunping the ball forwards – and that clearly didn’t work. Rosler got the ball on the floor, and that worked for a while, but then we started lumping it forwards again and we dropped like a stone.
If you’re expecting Caldwell to go big ‘un little ‘un with two wingers in a 4-4-2 formation, you’re going to be very disappointed.
From what he’s been saying about learning from previous coaches, I think he’s more likely to go three at the back with wing-backs and two strikers, or possible 3-4-3 with two ‘wide’ forwards.
But was he?? I felt sorry for the lad along with many more who followed him into the position. But he did really well in such a role playing for Swansea.
It’s a pretty common occurrence at this time of year. Latics have already informed the players in the development squad who are getting released & other clubs have done likewise
The players Latics are releasing are currently looking round for other clubs and so are the players released from other clubs. All these players (if they’re lucky) get offered opportunities to train with other clubs & those clubs (if possible) like to see them play in a game as opposed to just in training.
That’s all it is, & if the likes of Joey Johnson are not being kept on then it may be more beneficial to Latics future to take a look at other players who are going to be available than stick with players who they’ve already decided aren’t going to have a future at the club
It’s nowt to get your knickers in a twist about even if in this instance it may have cost Latics the gameCome on Tyldesley, let’s not let the facts get in the way of a good rant.
You play 2 recognised strikers.Of the 18 strikers who scored in the championship on Saturday how many do you rekon were having blinders or playing for a team that was playing well on the day?.I bet a good proportion were anonymous but got a goal out of nothing or against the run of play.Instinct is the key and Mckays decent strike rate means he must has some of it.He started with a winger up front.Back to the using players in their best positions ,being we needed a win all that possession worked a treat .No you don’t.
We played with Clarke and Fortune for several games. They’re both ‘reocognised’ strikers, but that didn’t work.
You play the player you are most confident will get a goal for you, or will create a goal for you.
James McLean is the best left winger in the squad, but with the dearth of decent options up front, it also looks like he’s rated as the best striker, and Caldwell like Mackay and like Rosler thinks he is the best option to get a goal.
Doesn’t matter if he has ‘Striker’ or ‘Winger’ next to his name in the Optima Stats. If he’s the most likely to score, you play him.
It’s been an absolute pleasure watching Kim since he joined us. :cheer:A premier league player playing in a poor championship team. It’s between Kimbo, Bong and McGuire for me.
If you are looking at someone who has played the full season, then its Perch by a country mile! B)
I’d agree with all of that.
Grant Holt hasn’t put a foot wrong. He has been superb. His performace at Burton Albion as sub is a stand out moment this season.
Joking apart anywhere but here under our shite management tactics he would have had 20 goals last and this season. From the brief spell that I saw him he would have been lucky to bag a brace! He didn’t win one single header when I saw him let alone cause havoc in the box ! Bad signing in my view!
The token Huddersfield fas at work would agree with you Phil. He says Holt had a couple of decent games, but for most of the time looked unfit, lazy and more interested in complaining to the referee. No the FA Cup was won by Bob reverting back to real football in the style we had been accustomed to in the past.
Please Mr Sharpe, we want our club back! How? Go on I dare you to try and explain that one.
Calamity had a choice but chose to weaken the left side and chose not to have any confidence in any of his strikers. It wouldn’t have mattered last week and this if he had tried two youngsters up top. He chose a stupid line up. He must have learned this off the last four managers he has worked under. Four managers who have undone everything that had been done by Jewell and Bruce in making us a force to be reckoned with on a national scale. Five managers, three seasons and two relegations. That’s what their football has brought us.Dear oh dear. ‘A force to reckoned with’? Seriously?
Granted but 10 corners against 4..67% possession ,8 shots against 3,…lo and behold didn’t score and lost again.Caldwell dicked it up .Not starting with a recognised forward in a crunch game was a joke.Who would you have preferred to see up front? Fortune or Mckay?
One of them has scored one all season, and the other hasn’t scored (granted, he’s hardly started)
Or, if you need a goal or two do you play your leading goal scorer up front?
He got the team to retain possession and create chances. I’d hardly say he dicked it up, as who’s to say either Fortune or McKay would have scored any of the chances that McLean missed?
I don’t see what else he could have done with the resources he has to hand.
Well Clarke was left out. Not good enough for an average Wolves side but deemed good enough for us. Wolves didn’t play a left sider upfront on his own with their average strikers on the bench but we did in a do or die match. We had all the possession as an home club lining up like we did should but an average Wolves side win.
There for the taking but given the win with negative tactic s before a ball was kicked.
We want our club back! We want real football!I’d say their league position suggests they’re not that average.
Grant Holt’s goals kept Huddersfield in the 2nd division – maybe he’s worth voting for.
What, all two of them?
Thats twice the number of league goals Mark Fortune has managed in more than double the number of appearances….
However, if you feel strongly, then you could always visit:http://www.liverpoolfc.com/2015-player-young-player-of-the-year-vote
and join the football loving public in their quest to make Mario Balotelli their player of the year!

Yes but less than McLean, Waghorn, Pennant, and the same number as several other Wigan Athletic players – all of which, other than Waghorn, are not strikers.
He scored 2 goals. Fortune has scored 1. Both are not exactly sparkling examples goalscoring excellence.
