I think Alcaraz being available will have a large bearing.
2-2
Isn’t he out for a month with a broken rib or something?
Steve Johnson was half cast, but oohh ahh Donny Page was the first actual black man me thinksI believe the correct phrase is mixed race or dual heritage!!
Calm down young man……It is understandable the need to see your competitors go the way of the ‘grave’ however, for me I take no pleasure in seeing some french, spanish, kraut….etc (you get my drift – ind in small letters) team win a prestigious trophy. Whoever it is (and it is now left to the southern muppets) I would prefer it to stay in this league……this is, after all, what we are trying to promote.
Clowns who jump up and down saying ManU and Citeh are out (let’s have a party) want to be lined up and shot outside their house in front of their family (c)copyright Clarkson………but you get my drift.
Love them or hate them…..they are hooooooge clubs…and they represent all of us too…..FFS I watched ManU beat Benfica on an old Black and White telly (when it was a completely different competition)and have been in love with ‘football’ ever since.
We have our team…..everyone hates others…….but when it comes to sticking it up the rest of Europe I want it to be from the E P L.
Our league…our team…..our way in the world.
Pity you have your puerile differences……
….I like your enthusiasm normally. ;)
Disagree completely
Having been born & raised a red & having a season ticket there till I was about 14 i still have Man Utd sympathies so I took no pleasure in seeing them get knocked out last night – apart from it making ferguson’s petulant strop the other week in a press conference (after he was asked why United & City were struggling in Europe) look even funnier
However I look at British clubs in Europe completely differently. I haven’t met enough supporters of all the foreign clubs to develop any sort of rivalry or dislike of them. On the other hand I’ve seen my team come up against many of the British clubs & have had to deal with their supporters on a daily basis & so develop a liking or disliking of them from that.
I’m not going to drop that simply because they are playing a team from Iceland or Latvia or Germany or Spain or France that I’ve barely heard of & have no axe to grind with. The fact they’re from a different piece of land to the one I live on is irrelevant.
None of the British clubs in Europe represent anyone but themselves & rightly soThere was a drop or two :P
I was at this game yesterday & can confirm what the scoreline suggests – Latics were awful
It wasn’t just the 3 goals in 4 minutes that killed the game off coz Latics were never in it at any point including after they scored the penalty to make it 3-1. The only save of note that I can recall the Liverpool keeper having to make was in the last 10 minutes when he tipped a shot round the post but I’ve no idea whether it was on target or not.For those who’ve been asking what Thomas & Van Aanholt have done to warrant disappearing from the 1st team squad, their performances yesterday provided ample demonstration. Thomas was just anonymous throughout & whilst Van Aanholt made a couple of decent runs forward he kept getting caught in possession & misplacing simple passes to the opposition.
Rodallega was as ineffective playing up front on his own against a bunch of Liverpool youngsters as he often is against premier league opposition.
Lopez looked shaky when put under any sort of pressure & that Dicko lad had a workrate that would put Simon Haworth to shame yet seems to think he’s the db’s & blames everyone else when he messes up (he doesn’t seem to popular with some of the Latics players either).
Of the rest – I wasn’t impressed by Nicholl’s in goal at all & he needs to learn how to line up his wall at a free kick (Shelvey’s 2 goals came from free kicks in identical positions that he didn’t get anywhere near). There was a lad on the left wing who they switched to the right & eventually took off who just looked lost from the first whistle & the 2 other central midfielders (apart from Thomas) Redmond & Boothman covered a lot of ground but didn’t seem up to the task physcially.
In short, with the exception of Rob Kiernan (who looked like he had a bit about him till he went off injured), none of those that played yesterday looked remotely like they are capable of stepping up to the first team squad any time soon & in the case of Rodallega if he’s hoping to force Martinez to recall him to starting action any time soon he needs to put in more of a shift than he did yesterday & I doubt Juventus will be following up their interest!!Surely it is time for dumb and dumber aka Graeme Jones and Graham Barrow to become government statistics? Why single out those 2? As coaches they will be getting the players to do what the manager is telling them to do.
I also believe that latics have a “defensive coach” in dennis Lawrence but again he will only be asking the players to do what the manager tells him toThat said, its clear from Bobby’s post match comments this weekend that quite clearly he isn’t asking them to defend in the manner in which they did on Saturday for some of Arsenal’s goals (although in my opinion Al Habsi was at fault for the first 3). Quite how he is asking the team to defend is at times however a bit baffling
If Anderson is the football agent who is now on the board or is chairman at Blackburn then I heard the allegations of him using the club to put players who are on his books into the club & him benefitting when they are taken on & sold, back in the summer
The Kean allegations I haven’t heard before & if I was the cockney latic admin I’d be a bit wary about allowing them to appear on here!!!!
Its incorrect to say that Steve Bruce bankrupted us.
Aside from the fact that the club was never bankrupt, Steve Bruce only spent the money that Dave Whelan told him that he could spend. Its not as if Whelan told him he had a transfer & wage budget of £10mill & Bruce went out, said sod it & spent £30mill instead.
Every manager we’ve ever had operates within the budgets that the club allows – its only Whelan decided 6 months before Bruce left that the business model the club had been operating wasn’t sustainable & decided to try & start making it self-sufficientI’d be interested to see how many managers have been sacked after their team’s have been beaten by Latics during our rise through the divisions & stay in the top flight – I seem to remember quite a few (especially during our Championship days)
It seems like getting beat by Latics is the ultimate badge of shame!!!
When he was fit he was a cracking player but his big problem was that he was barely ever fit – seemed to have a big problem breaking bones in his feet if I remember right.
I remember the start of one season where he got a run of games & he built up a cracking partnership with Joe Parkinson down the right hand sideHe is/was also the organiser of the latics masters team wasn’t he & I noticed the other year that his injury problems haven;t left him as he got crocked in the first game
Bobby’s right – for once!! ;)
Despite however much us darksiders might moan on here & grumble to each other on a match day & despite how much the lightsiders have a go at the darksiders to get behind the team/manager and start being “true supporters”. Despite that I can’t imagine any other club in the land in a similar situation where there would be so little open discontent towards the club
You only have to look at the Blackburn fans to see that large groups of them couldn’t wait for their team to go behind to start the chants & get out their banners. They may well have genuine gripes but I thought it was a bit sad on their partThat said, Bobby knows how to work a crowd with comments like those & the ones he gives in his fanzine interviews. In reality he probably thinks we’re a bunch of c***s
I thought they were all on salaries now (£40k per year rings a bell), not paid a fee per game, ever since they went full-time professional. They get paid a salary/retaining fee to be on the professional referees panel (or whatever they call it) which is around £35k-£40k a year depending on where you get the info from.
On top of that they also get £900-£1600 per game that they referee (again depending on where you read that although I as told at a referees association meeting that its “about a grand a game”) and their expenses paid (mileage, accomodation etc..) + a car.
So if a premier league ref does 38 games in a season you’re probably looking at about £75k-£80k a year before expenses & as they’re classed as self employed they’ll be all sorts of tax breaks they get too.
In the Evo-Stik premier division I get £30 for running the line!!!! :( :(Blunder referee Andre Marriner has been dumped from this weekend’s Barclays Premier League list as punishment for allowing Blackburn’s controversial goal at Wigan.Thats OK then.
Never understand whythey do that?
Considering that its likely to be Marriner’s full time job & will hit him in the pocket to the tune of about 1000 quid per game he isn’t given in the top flight, then that’s probably why they do it.
Its the equivalent of a player being banned & fined for being sent off I guess. Regardless it should teach him to be more observant & less complacent in future. Not that it helps Latics like
NB – the amount he’ll lose out on will fall if he gets given games in the lower leagues as replacements. If you want a classic under bruce here goes –
A game that we actually lost 3-2 v liverpool away 2008, this was the best ever performance i have ever seen from a wigan athletic side under any manager, 2 stunning goals from zaki, a display of power, pace and skill that silenced the scousers for 77 minutes until a refereeing boo boo far worse than any seen on saturday saw valencia sent off for enchroaching from a free kick – when TV replays showed, and everyone at the ground knew hadnt even happened.
This one incident gave liverpool some impetus and a foothold in a game they were dead and buried in, an equaliser followed and a last minute winner broke our hearts. It will never take away how good we were that day – within days palacious and heskey had departed and that quality never repeated.
Fair point that was a cracker, I just remembered that one. Special moment was the Zaki goal and his 15 minute track upto us away fans to celebrate…
So apart from that…… oh maybe the blackburn game….. but apart from that :)[/quote]
Ironically, given the criticism of Bobby’s chosen formation (& if my memory serves me right), Bruce employed a 4-5-1 formation that day & it worked a treat
Also if I remember rightly Valencia received his 1st caution for encroaching at a wall when he hadn’t but Steven Gerrard complained when he messed up his free kick. He got a second yellow about 5 minutes later for a challenge where he got the top of the ball first but clattered into the Mouser – Even Benitez said the first caution was a joke but sort of qualified that by saying the second caution should have been a straight red so justice was done. I can’t remember the challenge that well but remember plenty of people arguing that he’d got the ball
That ref was a plank all through the game & the most glaring example of how much of a “homer” he was came with the substiutions. When Latics made a couple at 2-1 up he made a point of running up to the player going off telling em to hurry up. When Liverpool went 3-2 up, made a substitution & the player trundled off he stood 30-40 yards away doing nowtI’ve not seen many, if any, better goals scored by a Latics mon than Zaki’s 2nd that day – what a waste of talent he turned out to be
These are only my opinion obviously but how about these for starters:
15/12/07: 5-3 v Blackburn Rovers
18/10/08: 2-3 v LiverpoolThere were others I could have put in but I guess it all depends on your criteria of a classic coz I’m sure there are some who would put the 1-0 win over Liverpool under Bobby as a classic but I wouldn’t. Great result yes but not a classic. The 3-2 win over Arsenal?? Unbelievable last 10 minutes admittedly but absolute dross for the previous 80 so I wouldn’t have that down as a classic either
There are other good results under Bruce such as the 5-0 win over Hull, drawing away at Chelsea etc.. but they weren’t classics IMO -
