There’s no doubt that the team’s performance levels have improved in the last coupld of months even if that hasn’t been refelected points wise (though as The Duke points out who we’ve played in that period has to be taken into account)

The key now that a good performance has also been reflected in the result is to follow that up & sustain it.

We’ve been here plenty of times over the last 2 seasons where the team has put in good performances & got the result too which in turn has increased supporters belief that “this is the turning point” & then its been followed by some complete bilge:
Beat Villa then lost to Wolves
Beat Chelsea then lost to Hull
Beat Burnley & then got wolloped by Portsmouth
Beat Sunderland & then threw a game away against Brum
Beat Liverpool & then got battered by Bolton
Beat Arsenal & then conceded 13 goals in the next 3 games
Beat WBA then chucked the game away against Newcastle
Beat Wolves & then didn’t win for 8 games

Admittedly it looks nowhere near as bad this season as it did last season when looked at like that but, even a committed dark sider like me can see some light at the end of the tunnel BUT it’ll take some form of sustained run of results before I’ll start to be optimistic that the drop can be avoided

Rodallega & N’Zogbia’s celebrations towards Bobby could have been one of 2 things:

    1) a show of solidarity with the manager or (with Rodallega) a sign of thanks for sticking by him after recent poor form & his strop against Chelsea – especially in light of Bobby’s public backing of him in press conferences (regardless of the rollocking I suspect he may have got behind closed doors)
    or
    2) (more so in Rodallega than N’Zogbia’s case) a taunting/pish take of Bobby in a “i’m the only forward you’ve got who can actually score goals” way

I like to think its the first but its not unknown for plenty of players to have done the second one

Bath – Not being a season ticket holder any more, when i do manage to get to games I have migrated from the West to the East stand.
I’ve always just asked for an east stand ticket. There’s then enough spare seats in ES2 for you to park your behind there without having nicked anyone’s seat

i then like to recreate the Springfield Park days so I up sticks & move down the other end at half time

Griff – If he does have his head screwed on I hope that he does realise that he’d be far better off playing every week at Latics (or any other top flight club that could pretty much guarantee it to him) than he would be at Old Trafford making sporadic starts in cup competitions & the odd sub appearance in the league

IMO he is not good enough to be a regular at a club likely to invest in some major midfield talent this summer – yet anyway. A couple of seasons of regular football in the top flight could bring his game on in leaps & bounds

i think that they all now have links to the professional male clubs whose names they’ve taken otherwise they wouldn’t be able to use the name

They didn’t all start off being associated with them though – Doncaster Belles Rovers just used to be called Doncaster Belles & had nowt to do with Doncaster Rovers
Everton Ladies (I think – its either them or Liverpool) are the team that used to be known as Leasowe Pacific

As for the whole idea – to me its a completely disproportinate waste of the FA’s time and money. £3mill could be far better invested in the game across the whole spectrum than chucking it at an idea that (spectator wise) at least the vast majority of people couldn’t give a flying fig about & calling it the super league or playing it in the summer itsn’t gonna make a blind bit of difference.
With all due respect to the women playing in the “super league” the majority of whom are probably better players than me – I wouldn’t watch them if they were playing in my back garden & giving away free beer. I’ve watched some of the games in the past on the telly & the standard is awful – you will see better quality football in the NWCL
It reminds me of a politically correct equivalent of the RFL’s repeatedly failed attempts to drum up any interest for rugby league outside of the M62 corridor & a couple of spots of Cumbria

in reply to: Liverpool touting #63413

One thing you can say about James McCarthy is that he seems to have a very wise head on his shoulders

He was offered a contract at Liverpool & turned it down coz he said it would be better for his development to be playing in the first team at Hamilton every week rather than sitting in the reserves/youth set up at Liverpool playing in meaningless matchs – even if it mean him losing out financially

I’d say as he’s still pretty young that he’d be thinking along the same lines still & if he goes to a club like Liverpool this summer that he’s not yet at that stage where he’d be a first team regular whereas at Latics he will be.

If Latics stay up I think he’ll stay for another season unless one of the mid to lower top half teams comes in for him & its likely that he’d be out of their price range

Take it yer a bellend from Tyldsley….eh Cap`n?

No :hand: – that would be me

I’ll not have anyone trying to steal my identity thank you very much!!

As Blackpool have an even worse goals conceded record than Latics & they have that clown Kingson in nets then I’d wager even Di Santo might be able to bag one against them ;)

in reply to: Rugby Imploding…… #63288

To be honest the whole Latics/Warrior rivalry/hatred is very much a chicken & the egg situation
If you ask a latics fan its the Warriors supporters/club who started it & vice versa. Any evidence which contradicts whichever side of the fence you’re on is batted back with a “yeah but that was only coz of what we’ve had to put up with over the years”

Truth is that both sets of fans are capable of being complete prats – take the posters on that RL fans forum acusing those on here of being brain dead, immature morons & failing to see the irony within their own post!!!! Similarly the poster who says “I know they are not all like that so I don’t like to generalise but 90% of them are …”!!!
I also have to take issue with the Crewe Alex supporting Warrior who hates us due to the games against us over the years coz Latics were dirty & even kicked one of their players in the face once. He/She must be forgetting that when Efe Sodje kicked Lee McCulloch in the chest/neck that Sodje was playing for Crewe & McCulloch for Latics!!
Moans that they had to move games coz of Latics conveniently forget Latics moving games for RL (domestic & international) in the earlier days at the JJB

Likewise Latics retorts of being big, fat, smelly, trolls tends to get a bit monotonous after a while (although the song always brings a smirk to my face however childish it might be). And Latics fans who randomly verbally abuse Wariors fans in the street & no better than the prats who, when i started watching Latics in the late 80’s, felt obliged to come up to me on buses, in shops & in the street to ask me why I was going watching Latics “they’re $h!te. Football is a p00f’s game. Watch a real mons sport”

in reply to: Apart from Villa #63286

At the start of the season I predicted that we’d get 39 points which included from the last 6 games a tally of 7 with wins against Blackpool, West Ham & a draw at Stoke which I doubt would be enough to keep us up

The only real extra point/s I could see us picking up is a draw at Sunderland.
Don’t think we’ll get owt from an Everton side who are now pushing for a European spot. Villa on their own patch would be a tough un to get owt from n’all

I’d agree with tea bag head when he says that its now probably down to any 3 from 6 for the drop as I think those above Blackburn are now pretty much safe

EDIT – having just done the BBC website predictor 38 points may well be enough now I’ve bothered to have a look at who the other teams have got to play. My 3 for the drop were Blackpool (36pts), Blackburn (36pts) & Wolves (37pts)

in reply to: Apart from Villa #63273

I think we could have done with the Sunderland/WBA game being a drawer just to keep as many clubs in the relegation mix as possible
As it is West Brom now look all but safe & I can’t help but look at them & think “if only”

As it is, my worry before this run of league games that the club has just gone through (from Liverpool on 12/2 to Chelsea on Saturday) was that Latics would be well & truly cut adrift at the foot of the table, so to go into Saturday’s game knowing that a victory could see the club out of the bottom 3 means the situation is nowhere near as dire as I though it could be

Whether the team is capable of putting the sort of points return together that so far Bobby’s team hasn’t looked close to doing is another matter but there are still chinks of light at the end of the tunnel

in reply to: GOOD RESULT #63137

Didn’t Torres score against Latics at the DW this season?

Maybe Caldwell had a hole in his pocket for that one ;)

in reply to: Chelsea and City have too much debt. #63136

The financial fair play rules will make absolutely no difference to clubs with wealthy benefactors as jayt quite rightly points out

If there was any danger that they would have made a difference then the rules would never have been accepted in the first place by the clubs

From what I can gather it’ll only make a bit of a dent to clubs who live beyond their means through bank loans, overdrafts etc..

in reply to: Chelsea is next #63135

“Stoke showed that they aren’t the invisible all conquering team the media would have you believe they are”

Chelsea are invisible???????? The lads have got no chance then
