In my very humble opinion there is no right or wrong, cutting edge or out of date formation & there never will be

The best formations are those which suit the abilities of your players whether that’s 4-4-2, 4-3-3, 4-5-1, 5-4-1, 3-5-2 or whatever

That’s why I think, amongst other mainly man management reasons, why Capello struggled at the World Cup. I mean what was the point of rigidly sticking to 4-4-2 as a formation when the squad he selected did not contain a single left winger in it?? It mean the team was completely unbalanced & whereas you might be able to get away wit it against Kazakstan you won’t be able to get away with it against the better sides

Likewise in my opinion 4-5-1 doesn’t work for Latics because (depending on how Sammonn fairs long term in the role) we don’t have the personnel to play that system. The main thrust of it needs to be having a centre forward who is a target man & who can hold the ball up, bring others into play, lay it off & then get in the penalty area. Latics don’t so we struggle to score goals – combined with a defence which seems trigger happy on the self destruct button at regular intervals during a game & its a recipe for struggling.

Unfortunately, just as Capello seems pig headed that its his way or no way, so does Martinez – I have to say that this attitude was summed up this week on wigantoday.net when Bobby had a little dig at the fans who had (prior to the first goal on Saturday) been getting frustrated by our (cough, ahem) patient build up play. His quote was somet along the lines of the first goal justifies how he wants the team to play football & they wouldn’t have scored that goal if they didn’t play the way he wants them to – so 1 goal by a team that scores under a goal a game on average justifies the way he plays & allows him to ignore the previous poor scoring rates.
He ignores the bits that go against his views & bigs up the small parts that he feels justifies it

In my opinion people should be given the option of whether they want to sit or stand

Also, terracing & terrace safety has moved on a million miles since the cattle like pens which played a part in the Hillsborough disaster

Although it has to be said they by no means caused it. Nor did they cause Heysel. Nor did they cause the Ibrox disaster. Nor is it what caused the Burnden Park disaster (although they played their part in this one).

There is no reason at all why modern terracing could not play its part in providing a safe environment to watch football

I don’t think the selection of the captain is a bad one (although there are certainly players in the squad who don’t like him for numerous reasons apparently) but the way Capello has handled it is absolutely shocking for a manager with his experience

No player has to do what their agent tells them to – they have free will
Basically Ellington thought he was worth the wages being offered by Latics up front. Latics understandably for someone untried at that level & not wanting to get lumbered with players on whopping contracts if (as everybody expected) they got relegated wanted the salary tied in to appearances & other performance related bonuses
WBA offered him the bigger up front salary (Latics offered him the bigger salary “package) & he took it. he also thought (as did most other people of they are honest) that WBA would be the more successful team of the 2 that season.
He regrets it now obviously coz of how latics performed that season & he now realises that Latics & its supporters were the perfect club for Ellington at that point in his career – whereas WBA fans wanted immediate results from a relatively big money signing, Latics fans were able to forgive him his regular barren spells coz we knew what he was capable of when he was on song & that those spells would be as regular as his barren ones
His agent was merely acting in Ellington’s (& his own) interest to get him more money

To be fair, you could frame it with the front side facing out & no-one would be any the wiser that it was that duffer’s shirt
With any luck his signature would be on the back as well so you could pretend like his signing never happened!! ;)

    What a load of balls

For a start, you could hear the ref blow his whistle virtually straight after Rodallega’s push – which was a push with his forearm into the small of the Brum defenders back

As for where they took the free kick – any ref will tell their linesman not to be too fussy about where free kicks are taken if they’re close to the team’s own penalty area. If they want to take it 10 yards further back than it should have been no match official is gonna argue the toss with em to make em bring it forward

As for whether the foul would have been given against the likes of Rooney & co, I like to think that as blatant a push as that will always be punished no matter who gives it & I’ve seen em given far more often than I’ve not – albeit if against Rooney it’ll be followed by an effin & jeffin outburst at the ref

If I’m honest whilst we’ve been on the end of a couple of ropey decisions in the previous couple of games whinging about blatantly correct decisions like Rodallega’s disallowed goal just make people look petty, bitter & scraping the barrel for excuses as to why the team loses

I’m with you Tini – Tyldesley might well be right, but it won’t be good enough and so I’ll be giving the rosary beads some hammer tonight.

I will take a victory in whatever shape it comes along but I think it’ll be a dull as dishwater 0-0 game

Listening to Mcleish on SkySports last night he is playing it down in terms of it not being a season decider for them & he’s told players with injuries not to put themselves forward to play if they aint fully fit coz he will need em for the next 9 games not just this one.
So with that in mind I think he’ll get his side to park the proverbial bus across goal & despite the improved performances of late the team still isn’t scoring & I don’t think they have it in em to break that style down.
Hammer them beads & hope I’m wrong Griff

he left the club before we got relegated to div 4 coz Dave Philpotss was the man that took us down

Whether that was before or after Stephen Gage took over I can’t remember

in reply to: Did we play Malmo FF on Saturday? #61991

dont know if we played the full first team, I can only see Gomez, S. Caldwell, Moses and Sammon (who I think scored for us)

Standish – I was quite happy playing my one game a week at the Trafford Centre Soccerdome but after I tore all my ankle ligaments for the umpteenth time shortly before my wedding (which went down well with the wife to be!!!) I was told that my ankle ligaments were now so weak that if I carried on playing I would just keep on getting the same injury every 12-18 months & each time the ankles would get weaker – so basically the advice was to stop playing

As such playing in any form wasn’t really an option.

I wanted to keep some involvement in football beyond watching Latics & I heard you got paid for it so I thought I’d give it a go & I’ve enjoyed it – some games more than others. I can take flak that comes my way coz I gave enough of it out to refs when playing & watching

i did a game on Saturday where I had a club’s management running on the pitch balling & screaming in my face (last minute penalties with the game tied at 1-1 never go down too well!!) but they’re very much the exception

Sammy – as I’ve been reffing for about 4 years now & just been promoted I’ll ask the wife if there’s any truth in your theory that the higher you go up the ladder the smaller your schlong becomes!!

in reply to: The Chairman’s comments #61852

Yeah but if people kept telling you that she was doing a great job as your wife, she was building for your future together & that you should have just given things more time, I’m guessing that you do tell em what a pain in the @r$e she was/is!!

She didn’t wear brown shoes n’all did she?

I had a mate who went & said it was a good weekend

Now I/m older, wiser(???) and with a family IF we do go down & pull em at a decent time of year I may offer to take the family down & get it all booked before the wife realises I’ll be sneaking off to the football!!

I haven’t been down that way since I went on a holiday to the new forest when I was about 8
