Gomez is a player that you can see has it “up there” but his speed of thought & movement is way too slow for this division

Personally I’d hate to see him as an orthodox midfielder at Latics at the moment coz it would just make our midfield even more lightweight, powder puff and non-committal than it is now.
I also think that he’s shown time & time again that he quite simply isn’t a right winger as VAT suggests putting him there tomorrow

Put simply if he’s ever going to be a success at Latics he has to play “in the hole” where he can drift about & try not to get picked up in order to give himself the amount of time & space he needs when he gets the ball to be able to do something with it without getting caught in possession.
To be honest he has exactly the same “faults” that could be levelled at Bobby when he played
Just as a bit of a side note, despite me believing him to be too lightweight I think that by far & away his best game in a Latics shirt was the away game at Stoke last season where they kicked him from pillar to post & (despite the Clayhead crowd giving him grief for over-acting) he dusted himself down & got on with it

As for N’Zogbia – I’d play him without a second’s thought tomorrow. We can only go off the club’s word about what happened last week & as far as they are concerned it was simply a matter of him handing in a transfer request 2 days before the start of the season, Bobby wasn’t happy with the timing & he dropped him coz he didn’t think he’d be mentally right for the game
This week he’s (allegedly) knuckled down, got on with things & accepted the fact that he will be allowed to leave as & when Latics get a bid which meets their valuation of him & not before then, when he decides, to a club & for a price that the buying club decides

So for me that’s it end of story – Lee McCulloch handed in a transfer request a few years back & by his own admission kicked up a hell of a stink to try & be allowed to leave. He was still picked
Stuart Barlow handed in a transfer request in the play off final season but he was still picked
Neill Rimmer used to hand in a transfer request on an almost daily basis for a few seasons & he was still picked (when fit)
They’re just 3 I can think of off the top of my head & I’m sure there are plenty more that people can remember. I don’t see the N’Zogbia situation of the last week as being any different

I’m going for a grey suit which’ll be mud-stained at the bottom of the trouser legs come full time as a result of his insistance on standing in the technical area all game waving his arms about

in reply to: N’zogbia to start?? #43321

The problem is that Martinez doesn’t seem to play anyone in “the hole” role.
Its a 4-5-1 which allegedly when we attack becomes a 4-3-3 so he’s in effect asking his wingers to become additional forwards
His 3 central midfielders are in effect orthodox midfielders & there’s no place for an “in hole” player

As such, even if i thought that Gomez was good enough, Bobby can’t play him in his preferred role coz it doesn’t exist

Or at least that’s what it looks like to me coz I’ve never seen the “in the hole” role played Bobby’s way before

Its not so much that there’s an acceptable level of defeat but that there’s an acceptable level of effort & commitment from the team

i can take my team getting thumped by any scoreline as long as they’ve given their all – collapsing & seeming to give up as they have done on many occasions over the last 12 months is what gets on my wazz

Truth is, whether you like to accept it or not, without the Americans in WW2, we’d have been in trouble. No, seriously! Hitler was on our doorstep and on the verge of invading when the USA came into the war in 1941

VAT – I’ll agree with you that without the input of the USA into WW2 then the conflict would have run a very different course.
However the Nazi army, luftwaffe & navy was at no point through the course of the war in any position to launch an invasion of Britain.
Yes it had been planned but was never anywhere near to fruition. In time (& I’m talking about the distant future) they may well have been able to launch this invasion but the war was lost for Hitler the second that he launched Operation Barbarosa. If he hadn’t launched that then Nazi Germany could have concentrated all its military planning & effort into defeating Britain in Britain itself & Africa.
As it was the war was lost for Nazi germany long before the Normandy landings whch in effect created the 2nd front in Europe & hastened the war’s end

As for Americans themselves – the ones I’ve met on my travels have all been salt of the earth people. Collectively it can be a different matter & as a nation I find their group pysche distasteful but you’ll find just as many people worldwide saying the same about the British

I would be very surprised if somewhere within the whole of Wigan there weren’t people living there who class themselves as jews

in reply to: Just a few anagrams of Wigan Athletic: #43242

Surely an anagram has to be a word or collection of words that makes some sort of linguistic sense as opposed to a random collection of letters to form words that don’t actually exist or a random collection of words that make no sense (Wagtail Ethnic, Lactating We Hi)

Offer it to Martin O’Neill – if he says no, he says no but if you don’t ask, you don’t get

As much as I hate to say it, I think that Graeme Souness would be a decent short-term fix who could drag that team of of the mire/their own complacency. Not sure I’d want him long term mind

    Dave Jones @ Cardiff

I can’t think of many others off the top of my head

just wondering how long is it going to take for you lot to finally give us one of your star assets (again).

To put it in simple terms – you can have him when your owner & manager are prepared to stump up what he’s worth (£10mill). Till then he’ll stay at Latics

in reply to: King Roberto #43154

The signs that he was out of his depth have been there for a long time but I think people were, & some still are, clinging to the hope that coz he’s a Latics legend that he’d come good, learn his lessons etc…

Unfortunately for Bobby Saturday’s game amplified all the problems that were there last season for everybody to see & coz it was the first game, with “his team”, against certs for relegation, at home I think the pigeons have come home to roost for alot of his previous supporters & many are realising that that faith seems to have been misplaced

I’d have liked him to have resigned a long time ago (around the Spurs away game) but now he’s had the summer here & the season has started I think he’s got to have a minimum of 5 games & a maximum of 10 (as I said before) to be able to prove one way or the other – 1 game isn’t enough.
If he was sacked/walks after 10 games if it hasn’t improved still gives someone more than enough time to turn it around. Latics were able to get a fellow premier league manager to jump ship in 2007 to join us after 14 games when we looked dead & buried. Not only were we able to attract that manager but he was then able to have the side in relative comfort soon after the turn of the year

Why i think he should be given 10 games I can’t explain to myself as I’m convinced he aint good enough – I guess it just seems right to give somebody a chance to prove themselves

And no need to apologise for the “w” comment – I’m sure there are many people who think I am ;)

I did say last week that I’d remind you the next time you changed your mind
I didn’t think it would be this quick though!!! ;)

Read my reply to you on the other thread and stop being a w*nker.

Running round going “Told you so! I told you so!”.[/quote]

    Lighten up man

If you’re gonna take things so seriously then I suggest not posting stuff to me in future telling me how you’ve blown my theories out of the water with your well reasoned arguments or that I should go support another team
Things like that have a habit of coming back & biting people on the @r$e

in reply to: King Roberto #43147

Dave – it was a light hearted ribbing & I hope you took it that way

The points I was trying to make last week were in the main about Bobby himself. I do think he has strenghtened the starting XI (although i don’t think the squad itself is strong enough) but to me he showed last season that he thinks his way is the right way even when it doesn’t work

I heard people say over the summer that he would have learned his lessons from last season but if he hadn’t learnt them by the middle of May (when he was still making the same errors he had been in August of the year before) then I doubted whether 3 months of the close season would have changed anything

Last season he showed himself to be naive and stubborn personally, and tactically one-dimensional & inflexible and I didn’t see anything from what I saw of Saturday’s game that convinced me he has changed or is capable of changing

But I wouldn’t have over-reacted if we’d battered Blackpool 4-0 so I aint over-reacting coz we got beat 4-0. Like you I don’t believe that giving him 5 or 9 more games will make much difference to his approach but I do believe he needs to be given a certain number of games to be able to prove that one way or the other. One game is not enough in my opinion to prove conclusively that he has or hasn’t learnt from last season no matter how bad that game was – I don’t believe an 8-1 scoreline would have flattered Blackpool

As for pre-season friendlies – I learnt a long time ago to not pay a blind bit of notice to how well or badly Latics perform coz its no indication whatsoever of how it’ll go when when the serious stuff starts

in reply to: King Roberto #43134
I don’t think we’d get out of it with this squad.

Last week it was the strongest squad we’ve ever had and that comment was a well reasoned, informed fact because you’d seen them play whilst I was told I didn’t know what i was on about coz I hadn’t seen a friendly game against Zaragoza & all i did was whinge, whinge, whinge, moan, moan, moan

As I’ve said in another thread I said last week that I’d remind you of this the next time the wind changed direction & you changed your mind!!

Here’s my take, for what it’s worth.

RM has consistently said that he needs 3 transfer windows. I don’t think he would keep saying that without having had some agreement from DW that he will get at least that. Assuming the summer he started wasn’t his first window, he has the January one to come before he would get binned.

Assuming, the first summer was deemed his first window, then he has had his three already. I think he has until end October/mid November before Whelan would get shut. And I think he will get shut at that point, if things carry on as poor as they are at the moment. And he would probably be right to do so, though personally, I think it would be a sad day.

IMO Bobby has had 3 transfer windows. He was appointed in early June last year which gave him the best partof 3 months of that particular transfer window
As for it being a sad day if he goes – I’d agree but only in so far as that he does seem a decent bloke who loves the club & I desparately wanted him to do well so it would be a shame if he failed. But if he aint good enough he needs to go
