I’d say it’s the other way round, and Roberto needs to break free from Whelan, and being forced to do the job with so much restraint.
It wasn’t Dave Whelan that insisted on playing 4-5-1 when it was clear to every man & his dog that we didn’t have the personnel to play that system
It wasn’t Dave Whelan that signed Scotland & Gomez to loud fanfare telling everyone that they’d have no trouble adapting to the top flight & then changed his mind when they’d flopped & said he’d only ever wanted to ease them in
It wasn’t Dave Whelan who made baffling & bizzare team selections & substitutions all season long
It wasn’t Dave Whelan who chose to bring in 2 coaches with not 1 single minute top flight playing or coaching experience
It wasn’t Dave Whelan who insisted on forcing a method of play onto some players who quite clearly weren’t good enough to play that way & yet refused to change his methods
It wasn’t Dave Whelan who didn’t sign players because he thought that, even though previous managers had seen sense & dropped them because they weren’t good enough, they were good enoughThe only thing you can accuse Whelan of is making his managers operate within a budget that isn’t going to cripple the club a la Pompey. That wouldn’t have changed the many things that Bobby got wrong last season (or the things he got right)
I can only assume that this sale is because of Bobby’s fixation with all his team being able to play their way out from the back as that is something that I don’t think Bramble looked comfortable with last season & this his attempt to get a squad capable of playing “his way”.
Unfortunately defensive capablities seem to come second in Bobby’s pre-requisites for defenders!!!!You also have to have some faith in Bobby’s comments last week that the supporters need to be aware that if somebody is sold it is because the club has a replacement already lined up and this may have been one of/the deal he was talking about.
Unfortunately I have about as much faith in Bobby as I do in Cameron & CleggAre you having a laugh with that, i cant believe i actually read it.You took the words right out of my mouth there Scoffy
“The culprits are easy to distinguish, skinheads with a Sergio Tacchini or Fred Perry jacket, with a head down stance accompanied with a stare that could kill from up to 100 yards. Stella can in one hand and fag in the other, oh and did I mention they’re usually unemployed?”
????????????
Shrewsbury Town, Carlisle United, etc spring to mind.
You say that but even Morcambe have a smart Puma kit
http://www.footballshirtculture.com/ima … a-kits.jpg
and Swindon with adidas
http://www.footballshirtculture.com/ima … -kit-d.jpg
To be honest 1932 – those 2 kits you bring up are IMO good examples of how a well known manufacturer can churn out pretty rank kits of their own. The Swindon one especially is awful – although both of them may well be made from a better material than the Mi-fit effort
I saw United’s latest effort in the JJB shop window in St Helens the other day & it seems Nike are capable of coming up with duds of their own too. Chelsea’s is another example of Adidas getting it wrong
The Latics one Puma made was awful & I didn’t particularly like the first Adidas effort either.
Anyway my point being that getting a big name manufacturer in is no guarantee that the kit will be any goodLooks very much like a Wigan kit to me.
Which one? I can’t think of one.
http://www.historicalkits.co.uk/Wigan_A … hletic.htm
I guess you could say it looks quite like the one from 1968-1970!!
Its awful.
I got slated for critisising the fact it was inevitable mi-fit wouldnt produce a good kit, and it seems im right.
Looks the same cheap material as vandanel used. And it doesnt look like a Wigan kit.

Can’t see the link to the club site from behind my firewall and therefore obviously can’t see the design, but I am pretty impressed that you can tell the quality of the material from a picture.
To be fair Griff the picture does give a pretty good indication that its exactly the same material as last years kit. Likewise, when they released pictures of last years kit you could tell that it was made from the same material as that awful patrick kit Latics wore in the 2nd season in the premier league. This one looks the same
As for the design – I don’t particularly mind it from initial glances. Didn’t really wanna see the full stripes go but its alright
I do agree that the club should start trying to involve fans in the choice of kit in a “here are 4 kits vote for your favourite” kind of way but that still wouldn’t guarantee a choice everyone would be happy with coz people have different tastes – just coz a song is #1 in the charts it doesn’t mean its the best song around does it?
In one of my bored moments during a lunch break last week I e-mailed the BBC South American football correspondent Tim Vickery just to see how he thought Boselli would do for us this season. Here is his reply:
“I’ll be happy to be proved wrong but I’ll be surprised if he’s a success. He’s an out-and-out goalscorer – he doesn’t offer anything outside the penalty area. I suppose you might compare him to Miroslav Klose in a way – not particularly big, strong or skilful but he has that penalty area nose.
With Estudiantes, Boselli was playing in front of the best midfield in South America. So there were lots of chances, he put a few away and his confidence soared. He is now in a much stronger league but not one of the strongest teams. He might struggle – and if he’s not scoring, he doesn’t do much else.”
That young lad also got a contract at the end of last season with Kirkland and Martinez both singing his praises.
At 29, I’m not sure he qualifies as much of a young man anymore.
He does in my book.
I’m confused :?
Surely the young lad salfordlatic was referring to was that Lee Nicholls. Now I know you can play outside of the age group for these U21, U19 sides but surely if he’s 29 that would be stretching things a bit too far!!!They’re not handbags, they’re manbags
“I only said that hull wanted him to go to celtic, and he refused, that is the same as the media version of events,so how is my version flawed”
That isn’t the same as some of the media version of events though. Some of the media version of events (in print & online) have him as being more than prepared to go but demanding a large pay increase to do so. Your version of events is that Bullard didn’t want to go, Hull tried to force him to go & he dug his heels in and that “may” be where the pay increase strories have come from. One story has come from someone high up at Hull & another from Bullard himself
“do you want to clarify what you meant in the hull/celtic saga – you have made an assumption based on newspaper/message board tickle tackle, when in fact you know nothing”
Look up “saga” in a thesaurus & it will link it to story, tale, account, chronicle, history & narrative amongst others. That is what I meant. The issue I have now is you appearing to tell anybody who has a view on Bullard’s transfer history over the last 4 years that is different from your own that they “know nothing” because you have heard a different story from a) Bullard himself & b) 2nd hand from someone that knows Bullard
The views I hold on Jimmy Bullard are not purely based on “newspaper/message board tickle tackle” nor do they have “no factual basis” purely coz I didn’t hear them directly from Jimmy Bullard. There views I hold having listened to people like yourself with “this is what really happened” versions of events, club statements, newspaper accounts, internet gossip, messageboard postings etc.. & having done so I’ve formed an opinion which I’m as free to express as the next person
As for this opinion having “no factual basis” – if a historical study uses merely one piece of evidence as the basis for its findings whilst another looks at a wide variety of sources & different types of evidence as the basis for its findings on the same subject, I know which study’s findings I’d consider the most valid“Wouldn’t mind seeing Bramble be the captain next season, Simply because he scored alot of vital goals last season for us”
He scored twice. All contributions gratefully received and all that but its hardly “alot”
jimmy bullard did not want to leave us FACT, when he signed his new contract just before our first premiership game v chelsea he had a clause in it to increase his wages with a contract extention if we stayed up, latics chose not to honour it and to make him available, they did a deal with fulham, bullard told paul jewell he didnt want to leave and was told he wasnt wanted, how do i know bullard himself told a number of people including myself in the starr inn in lymm after a fishing match that i was in along with bullard,
one of the lads who i was with that night,a fishing acquaintance,is still mates with bullard , i saw this person on saturday and bullards name cropped up in our conversation,he told me that hull were trying to off load him and his wages and only celtic wanted him,he had been up for a look round at celtic but decided he didnt want to go there, hull basically told him he was going like it or not,fo bullard has dug his heels in and refused.now that may or may not be why he is demanding more money ,my contact only said he didnt want to go there – it just shows that sometimes there is more to the murky world of pro football than what the clubs/players/press tell us.
LMB – I don’t know Jimmy Bullard, nor do I know anyone that does know him but I have heard the same story (& very similar ones) from other people.
All I will say that is if a footballer was telling a story regarding him leaving a club to a bunch of fishing mates or drinking mates & he knows that a good proportion of those mates support the club he has just left, that is going to have a big bearing on the version of events that he tells those people.
That’s why I have taken these stories with a big pinch of salt, just as I have with those that I have heard direct from the club in the press & via people, who know people etc.. who work at Latics
Take a combination of all the version of events & you will probably get to somewhere nearer the truthHis contract conduct at Fulham, where he started to demand a new & improved contract very soon after returning from a major injury, having a handful of games under his belt & with a couple of years still left on his contract didn’t look too hot to me either
Now I aint saying that in the same circumstances I would have acted any differently, or would have done the same with the proposed switch to Celtic, but he’s as mercenary as the rest of um & the fact his carefully sculptured media image portrays him otherwise grates on me
the trouble with your theory and reason behind bullards tale of events is, this took place in lymm ,warrington, none of the other people there to my knowledge ever watched wigan,i had never been in his company before that night and at the time he didnt know i watched wigan.
but the main reason his story, no matter how much he embellished his version, has a ring of truth to it,is latics did exactly the same to jason roberts not long after.
the rest is your opinion and paper message board rumour that you have used to form an opinion of bullard, all i know about this latest episode is
hull city have tried to force him into a move to celtic, which for what ever reason he doesnt want and that as i said in my first post, was told to me personally by someone who is still best of mates with jimmy bullard.
“but the main reason his story, no matter how much he embellished his version, has a ring of truth to it,is latics did exactly the same to jason roberts”
I never said his story couldn’t have a ring of truth about it, just that if the story came from his mouth, as he’s holding court with a group of people, he is going to embellish it just as Latics weren’t going to come out with things that painted them (or Whelan) in a bad lightAs with what you’ve been told about his proposed move to Celtic because you’ve heard it direct from him or from someone who heard it direct from him, you’ve taken it as the truth whilst dismissing any other stories on the matter & that’s just as flawed a basis for believing something than mine
“He is still looking to pick up a few more players”
I hope its more than a few. I’d still say we need another striker. Another right winger. 1 left winger (assuming Moses will be playing there). 2 or at a push 1 right back. 1 left back & someone in “the hole”
Played in the same Sunday league football team for a while as Dr Who
or Christopher Eccleston as he preferred to be calledCheeky fecker MickyC!!!!!!!!!!!
Sephton – I’ve been following Latics for nearly 24 years now, home & away in competitive & friendly fixtures & I’ve got a pretty good grasp of the followings we’ll take to places during that time.
Never in a million years will there be 2,900 Latics fans paying £10 to watch a pre-season friendly at Oldham. If we pulled them in the 3rd round of the FA Cup we wouldn’t take that many so for a meaningless & inevitably dull as dishwater pre-season friendly there aint a cat in hells chance
500ish tops will be there -
