Edinburgh – the interest on United’s debt could certainly be better spent for the club elsewhere but United’s income won’t be being used to pay off debts/interest on debts for any of their other business interests – which is what I meant
As long as United’s income covers the interest & loan repayments & allows them to strengthen on the playing field & all the rest of it. The Glazer family debts don’t really matter – even if they were forced to sell United, they’d be snapped up in a second
The Glazer family’s level of debt is irrelevant to Manchester United as long as the club continues to bring in income that can service that debt & (from the footballing point of view) provide money for salaries, transfers etc..
Contrary to popular opinion, having seen it many times over the years I don’t think Heskey works at all as a lone striker in a 4-5-1.
His strength, & why it appears Rooney likes playing alongside him, is that he pulls defenders all over the shop & creates space for another striker. His other strength is in the air where he will win flick on’s all day – if he’s up front on his todd there’s nobody around to run on to his flick on’s
To be a success as a lone striker in a 4-5-1 you’ve got to have a good first touch & be able to hold the ball up in order to bring others into play – not, as Heskey does, fall down like a sack of spuds whenever an opposition defender goes near you & his first touch with his feet is often a pass to the opposition

I don’t think anybody is going to buy the DVD and want to re-live the 9-1 and 8-0 batterings, do you? Those games are best kept locked up in the deeper recesses of my mind, only to be brought up when asked if I remember them, to which I will simply reply: “yes”.Its supposed to be a season review, so what the hell’s the point of glossing over all the $h!t bits?? Reminds me of the highlights of the 1999/2000 season that did the same & wound up with Latics beating Gillingham 2-0 in the play-off final & finished with a freeze frame shot of Dave Whelan, arms aloft, at Wembley
If I remember rightly, Bobby called the referee a liar & a cheat.
He may well have been speaking the truth but he should have gone through the proper channels as opposed to airing it publicly
Ferguson & co know how to play the system and you won’t hear em using those words or language
Its not a case of the FA clamping down on the smaller clubs coz they’re scared of the big boys either – Jewell let rip at Phil Dowd after the league game at the Emirates in 2006/07 but he chose his words carefully & got let off with the same charge Bobby had
“Look at Cardiff their case kept getting deferred whilst they hoped for promotion. Not sure what will happen to them now”
As far as I’m aware, Cardiff’s hearing was postponed again as they provided proof that some Malaysian businessman was buying the club & he gave confirmation that the tax bill would be settled upon completion of his takeover
I think that takeover was confirmed late last week hence why they now seem to be offering big money deals to the likes of Joe Ledley & Craig BellamyHe seems an excellent shot stopper from what I’ve seen of him but to say he is a “good keeper” is stretching the realms of possibility somewhat.
His decision making in terms of when to come for crosses, when to stay on his line, when to catch it, when to punch it, when to come out & close the angle on someone about to shoot & how to attempt to challenge a striker for a 50/50 ball are the worst I have seen in all my time of watching football (My dad used to bang on about how bad Paddy Roache was for united but that’s a bit before my time). & its not in isolated games – its been in every single game that he’s played.
I thought Nigel Adkins was bad in that respect but this fella stands head & shoulders above him
I can’t see the relatively stingy Arsene Wenger bidding £15mill for a player who is gonna be at best 3rd & at worst 4th choice striker for them behind Van Persie, Chamakawotsit & Bendtner.
If he is prepared to spend £15mill on Rodallega then I think he’s taken leave of his senses as he isn’t worth anything near that – even as a striker as opposed to Bobby’s preference for sticking him on the wing
Its called giving people a choice.
There should be seating areas available for those who wish to sit & there should be standing areas available for those, who like me, wish to stand.
In the past we had that choice. Now we don’t & I think that’s wrong
The Hillsborough tragedy was caused by a combination of many factors & so to blame it on terracing is naive (IMO)
Jimmy Bullard
For all his faults he ws the hub of that team & at the heart of everything Latics did when they didn’t have the ball & at the heart of everything we did going forward and that has never been replaced
“The last time we ditched a manager prematurely it was Mathias, that put us back years”
I know I’m in a minority on this but I thought Whelan did the right thing in getting rid of Mathias & actually think his appointment was a mistake in the first place
I thought the football was wretched (sacrificing the midfield, defending in numbers & hitting it long for our 3 forwards). I also thought Mathias lacked the belief in his team’s abilities to beat the bigger club’s in the division like City that year – much like when Eriksson was in charge of EnglandAs for Benson’s year being wasted – yes it imploded a bit towards the end of the season but we got to a play off final & were within minutes of promotion to the Championship. Certainly no more a wasted season than Mathias’s
Do these facts take into account what goals/chances created were done so from open play as opposed to set pieces such as corners, free kicks etc..?
Not that I’m denying the goal scoring figures under Bobby hold up well against those from 3 other seasons but I seem to remember us scoring alot of goals this season from set pieces. I also remember numerous games of us having loads of possession but little to show for it at the end of the day – I’m sure at one point against Chelsea Latics had had 60odd% of possession without having a single strike on targetIt could all be down to personal taste. I like fast & furious, blood & guts type football and the “style” Bobby seemed to be trying to introduce (IMO with players who weren’t of a high enough skill level to carry it out) last season, for the most part bored me rigid. The same is true of my mates, even some contractor I deal with at work & alot on here too so to say he is trying to play “the right way” when stated as fact as it was in the thread I replied to is (IMO) a load of guff
“Personally I think it’s a breath of fresh air to see a manager trying to play the game the right way”
This “trying to play the game the right way” is really starting to get on my wazz
For me tryign to play the right way is by winning, scoring goals, not conceding many & playign with guts & passion
For the vast majority of the season what I witnessed was turgid & dull. Performances devoid of passion, creativity, fight & pace and replaced with slow, plodding, gutless, sideways football that created little in the way of goal scoring opportunities & when it did there was no-one there to get on the end of it coz he didn’t have the personnel to make his 4-5-1 formation work
I’d love to know if “trying to play the right way” includes getting your worst points tally since entering the top flight, turning one of the best defences in the league into the worst within months, having our worst ever goals conceded & goals difference record since entering the top flight???No matter how many people say & how often they repeat it, nothing will convince me that what i witnessed for the vast majority of last season was “trying to play football the right way”
“I hope Kevin Langley’s lad makes it into the first team so we can shout things like “Bloody rubbish Langley” or “Get Langley off” again”
If he’s anything like his old mine he’ll turn round & tell you to “f**k off” like he did to me at Doncaster away in Swain’s season in charge.
Cue mouth frothing protests from me that “I pay your wages etc…”
In hindsight he’d probably have been well within his rights top to chin me one -
