I think the reason why he was popular despite the obvious flaws to his game were that at times when it looked like many other players wanted to be anywhere other than out on that pitch in a Latics shirt, McClean looked like he was busting a gut to do his best every time he played.
At Latics, we’ve always taken a shine to 100%’ers with slightly limited ability. That’s why the likes of Neil Roberts became cult heroes whilst your Simon Haworth’s (even before he did the Ayatollah), who had more talent in his little finger, used to get pilloried
Common denominator is dodgey knees flash Harry it’s no coincidence every club is in a worse state when he goesI don’t like the man but nothing that happens at any club he is at, other than what takes place on the football pitch can be attributed to him.
If Pompey ended up in a mess financially its because the owner overspent then wanted his money back
At QPR he’s got them relegated but he spent what the owners said he could spend & quite why Redknapp would be expected to have any sort of involvement in the work permit paperwork is beyond meThanks for the history lesson Sammy. The article tells me that, after clearing their £3m debt and selling CP for £12.5m, there was £9.5 million left. What it doesn’t tell me was what was the value of the sale of Springfield Park. Perhaps you or one of your historians can enlighten me, and then tell me how much of the profit from the sale of the old ground was used towards the building of the new one. When you answer this question, you may realise why the ground is still owned by a company other than Wigan Athletic FC.
Mutty – no money from the sale of either Springfield Park or Central Park was used to fund the building of the new stadium.
Quite aside from the fact that all the funding for the building of the ground was in place before construction started (& construction started long before it was ever agreed that Wigan RL would become tenants instead of Orrell), the money from the sale of the old grounds went directly into the coffers of the respective clubs. A mate of mine did a dissertation at Uni on some football admin course on the construction of the stadium, was given access to all the info on it & it was him who set me straight on that point when I whinged that it wasn’t right that Latics were contributing to the cost whereas the rugby weren’t coz they weren’t owned by Whelan & hadn’t been on board at the start
Besides which, As you’ve quite rightly pointed out the DW is owned & run by a separate company anyway & always has been, so that company wold have no right to access the money from the sale of something that they didn’t ownHeard we were linked with David Cotterill, what about a Latics return for Ryan?
I think his wages could be a stumbling block.[/quote]
And his complete & total inability to stay fit for longer than 72 hours
Personally I don’t know whether Boyce has what it takes to be a success as a League One player next season – I do know that he looked awful last season & it wasn’t just his speed that was showing him up, it was his positioning & decision making. However people that have seen him in training every day are quite clearly seeing him as someone who is going to be a back up player if he stays – his pay as you play deal won’t be an “if you don’t play you get nowt” deal but more a lower basic with higher appearance fees & for a 36 year old with poor form over the last 12 months that makes sense
As for rewarding his loyalty with a better deal – as others have pointed out, Latics don’t have the cash to hand out big deals based purely on sentiment. Boyce’s loyalty has been rewarded over the last 9 years with a salary virtually all of us can only dream of, but also I have no doubt that he signed those deals because they were the best ones he was offered by any club & if a club had come along dangling a far better deal in front of him he would have left & I wouldn’t have blamed him
And people saying offer him a backroom role or coaching kids etc.. – Again Latics don’t have the money to create new roles for someone if they are happy with what they currently have in place & it may also not be what Boyce wants
The only reason we’re discussing this is because Boyce himself has openly discussed the details in his newspaper column. It’s a blatant attempt by Boyce to whip up the fans passion to try & get them to put pressure on the club to offer him a better deal & I suspect that he knows that there aren’t going to be many decent offers forthcoming to him from elsewhere (if as he says he could see the signs from January that the club wouldn’t renew his deal then you can bet your life that he’s had his agent scouting him around). In light of that I think Sharpe has got it spot on in publicly replying to Boyce with his “a final offer has been made & if he doesn’t like it that’s his choice” statement – it’s very much a “you can’t play us” statement
There can’t be any room for sentimentality in football
Is it not a little worrying that it will be a free transfer?. If he is a quality player then surely he would command a fee.Not really. From what I can gather, his contract is up & as (if he came) he would be moving from one national FA to another there would be no fee involved
- Do Wigan Athletic actually pay rent? I’m sure they don’t pay anything for using the stadium. The stadium is owned by the Whelan family so why would they throw the football club out while they still own both? If the club is ever sold, they will invariably include the stadium within that sale.
[/ul]
I don’t know if Latics pay rent or not but the majority shareholder at Latics are Wigan Athletic Holdings Ltd who are also the majority shareholder in the company that operate the DW Stadium – Wigan RL have no ties to either. The Whelan family own 100% of WAH Ltd
Whilst it might look like the same thing, technically what the Whelan family are doing is reducing their risk exposure. Therefore if, for whatever reason, Latics went belly up WAH Ltd would still have the stadium as an asset no matter what was stripped from Latics. I’ve no problem with that coz it makes perfect sense from their point of view
By the same token though because of this situation, it would be perfectly possible for WAH Ltd/The Whelan’s to sell the DW stadium to whoever they wanted whilst retaining ownership of Latics. They could also sell Latics whilst retaining all their controlling stake in the stadium – It is a situation that can be open to abuse & if memory serves me right I think Crystal Palace or Brentford ended up in bother when Ron Noades flogged them coz he had a similar set up & didn’t sell the ground when he sold the club meaning he was able to keep charging rent & the club couldn’t make any money off any of the stadium’s facilities.
Not that I’m saying anyone at WAH Ltd would do that, but it would be possibleYou say 5 teams have done the same. I know one is Wolves, and I suspect Southampton are too, who are the others?Man City are definitely one of em – relegated from the top flight in 1996 & down from Div 1/Championship in 1998
It’s a pretty common occurrence at this time of year. Latics have already informed the players in the development squad who are getting released & other clubs have done likewise
The players Latics are releasing are currently looking round for other clubs and so are the players released from other clubs. All these players (if they’re lucky) get offered opportunities to train with other clubs & those clubs (if possible) like to see them play in a game as opposed to just in training.
That’s all it is, & if the likes of Joey Johnson are not being kept on then it may be more beneficial to Latics future to take a look at other players who are going to be available than stick with players who they’ve already decided aren’t going to have a future at the club
It’s nowt to get your knickers in a twist about even if in this instance it may have cost Latics the gameRotherham will only get 3 points deducted if We are 5 points behind them.No way on this earth will the f.a relagate them you just watch what happens. ;)It’s not the FA who have pressed charges & who will pass judgement & sentence. It’s the Football League – they’re 2 different organisations & neither will have any preference over who goes down or not
Clerical error or not they fielded an ineligible player in a game they won 1-0.
Previous punishments handed out show that it doesn’t matter why the mistake was made just that it was made.regardless I think Latics won’t get the points needed in our remaining 2 games
Reading being safe now is a slight worry. Rotherham could win that.We just need to take 6 points and see what happens. If we stay up, superb. If we go down, we only have ourselves to blame.
Unfortunately I think Rotherham will beat Reading next Tuesday whilst Latics will struggle to get anything against either Wolves or Brentford so I’d imagine even after Rotherham’s points deduction (which I’ve read will be confirmed by close of play Friday) that Latics will be relegated by this time next week
It was simple – St Helens win and they stay up. Anything else they go down.Town scored after 36 minutes and hung on – until a 90th minute equaliser relegated them.
Well, do I view that as “I’ve seen one relegation this year, that’s enough”, or “Well, this is the year I see two relegations”? ;)
That club has been well & truly shafted by A.N. Other and I’m amazed that they’ve been able to function, let alone carry on competing in that division for so long.
It’s to the credit of those behind the scenes there that they haveLost 1-0 and finish 2nd.Had plenty of chances but couldn’t finish.
I know both teams had to play on it, but having been there on Saturday I’m not surprised that the Latics youngster didn’t get anything from the game
The pitch at Radcliffe is on quite a steep slope and it was rock hard, dusty & bobbly as owt.
The Rochdale players would have been used to it whilst it will have hampered Latics silky smooth, on the deck, passing gameAndy Liddell scored a belter at home to Preston from the edge of the area in 1999 or 2000
Unfortunately one of their guys slammed in a 30 yard volley not long after to equalise in a 2-2 draw that even brought applause from the Latics faithful -
