What’s the relevance of Uwe Rosler appearing in it?
Both Al Habsi and Carson save numerous penalties during a game but it doesn’t mean they’ll save them in a shootout.I don’t think I ever saw Roy Carroll concede a penalty outside a shootout. Similarly I never saw him save one in a shootout.
Spot on (no pun intended) – was it the 98/99 or 99/00 season where I think Carroll saved every penalty taken against him during the course of a game. And there were quite a few. And then in a penalty shoot out in the FA Cup replay against Notts County he never saved one??
Like I said there was virtually no difference between Carson & Fabianski’s diving technique on Saturday. Ultimately the difference was that one of em got lucky twice & guessed the same way as the kicker
My reference to Shilton was around the fact he got nowhere near any pen! At least Shilton went the right way. Carsons technique and the way he sold himself on every penalty meant it was easy for their players to see which way he was diving. Anyway. Onwards and upwards! But Shilton got near to all of em – just not quite near enough!!
the point I’m making is that Shilton didn’t sell himself before the penalty was taken & he didn’t save any of them. A keeper has to go early otherwise coz unless its a really weak & feeble kick they don’t have enough time to react & cover the ground needed to save a well struck penalty.
Having just watched the penalties again, other than the bouncing across the line that Carson did, when it came to the kick itself both him & Fabianski sold themselves in pretty much an identical fashion – the only difference being that Fabianski got lucky twice (or the penalty takers didn’t read his movement as well as Arsenal’s did) & went the right way & the penalties were hit at an ideal height, speed & angle for him to save them once he had done soOn the penalty shoot out, I’m no expert but I’ve always read & heard that you get your best penalty takers to take your first penalties. the idea being if you go first then you’re immediately putting pressure on the other team if you go in front coz they are then playing catch up. Alternatively if you miss the first one it takes some pressure off the opposition
With that in mind, whilst he deserves credit for putting himself forward to take one it was a very strange decision to let Caldwell go first – & it was a poor penalty. Not hard enough & too close to the keeper so if he guessed the right way it was an easy save. Collinson’s wasn’t much betterOther than the penalty shoot out however I thought Latics were magnificent. Rosler got his tactics absolutely spot on & whilst personally i wouldn’t have gone with Carson or Crainey I don’t think either put much of a foot wrong in 2 hours of football against one of the top sides in Europe.
I thought taking McManaman off was a strange substitution but it turns out he was injured so that explains that one. Maloney may have offered more attacking threat as a replacement but Powell made the midfield more of a solid unit. Whatever, Rosler’s tactics & substitutions still made Arsenal to have to resort to hoofing it up to target men so it worked. The Arsenal goal didn’t come from that decision but from Boyce drifting off his man after the cornerAll in all whilst there’s no shiny trophy to celebrate with I’m arguably prouder of the team after Saturday than I was after last year’s final. At the end of the day Rosler took a poorer squad than Martinez had last season & with a team a division below pushed Arsenal all the way
I still don’t like his squad rotation but Rosler is provng himself to be one of the most tactically astute manager’s I’ve seen at LaticsAs well as Carson played in the match his penalty saving technique was awful. He commits far too early making it easy for the opposition. Reminded me of Shilton in Italia 90. Ali has so much more spring and when you think how many he has saved could have made the difference.Whilst Carson’s penalty technique may or may not be awful, you’re wrong to compare it to Shilton in the 1990 World Cup – I saw a programme once about England’s penalty shoot out record & they asked Shilton about his penalty saving technique against West Germany.
He said that for penalties he never tried to guess beforehand which way a kicker was going to send it but waited until they’d taken it & he could see where it was going before committing himself. If you watch the footage, Shilton goes the right way for them all but just isn’t able to get over far enough to them
I reckon it’s down to the keeper guessing right at the end of day and that’s what the Arsenal keeper himself has admitted to.
Obviously the keeper has to go the right way. He can go the right way and still be beaten though if the penalty has enough power and is placed well. See the Gomez penalty for example.
The first two penalties were terrible penalties simple as that.
Having seen the Collison pen again BTW I still think Fabianski moves off his line before he’s taken it.
Here’s my video taken from Block 501, row 18…
Play it frame by frame. Fabianski’s left foot is nearly 2 yards off the line when the ball is struck. How did Oliver not spot that?
Watch Carson for the very next penalty. He is just as far off his line as Fabianski was when the kick was taken.
The ref’s watch for significant forward movement from a keeper at a penalty & a bit of a bounce forward doesn’t constitute thatLatics were absolutely awful in that game & Arsenal didn’t even need to get out of neutral to go 2-0 up & completely boss the game. I think Alan Smith sums it up in his punditry after Latics 3rd has gone in when he describes the performance as less than average
The arrogance that often epitomises Arsenal went into overload & they thought the game was over & were mentally on the coach home by the time Watson put the first one away, then they just imploded in the last 2 minutes.
More of the same would do nicely on Saturday!!!!Hopefully that game will be a dead runner so people may save their money for the FA Cup final & play off games!!
Don’t forget Aston Vile , Man ure , cup less palace ,Joke city!
baa diff is a cracker btw Griff !!The Cardiff one is a classic, I won’t disagree there for once in a while
Is there a similar one for their friends down the road?
Swaaaa-nsea??
If you want to look like a smart arse & that you know the native’s language then “A-baaa-tawe” works quite well even if it is a bit similar to Baa-diff.
Show’s a bit of thought has gone into it though
Ah but then Tylders, Baadiff does not work as it should be in the native tongue Caerdydd. just nitpicking like ;)
Yeah but it’s not widely spoken in that neck of the woods so the English version would be (most of) their native tongue anyway!!

Show’s a bit of thought has gone into it thoughThe only one who seems to be getting his knickers in a twist is you!Yes, Wigan fans are the only ones ever to refer to their club as FA Cup Champions, but then again, we are famous for our groundbreaking songs:
You’re just a small town in Villa
Again, we’re going to win you again
You’re just a town full of P@kisI’ve gone commando today so there’s no knickers to get twisted!!! Some others obviously do though hence why it’s appeared on a blog & why some refuse to sing it
Of the 3 examples you state of Latics groundbreaking songs one is geographically incorrect, another is completely incorrect use of English & the last one is just racist
They don’t really compare to a chant which just boils down to personal preference between 2 words both of which can be usedso there was no doubt that there was a sending off offence
and they suffered no punishment apart from losing a man
for about an hour in a game they were getting spanked in
anyway.
So things didn’t work out to badly for them.A handball offence is only a red card if it prevents a certain goal or a goal scoring opportunity
The original shot was going wide so the FA rescinded the card shown to the wrong man & said it wouldn’t be applied to the correct player coz the ref got the sending off decision for the offence wrong
In fact they were I correctly made to play with 10 men for an hour so they suffered more than they should have doneJust to say as well I was on a Chorley game on Bonfire Night against Matlock Town & Chorley were by far & away the best side I’ve seen at that level including Chester when they were battering everyone a few years back
Whichever Flitcroft brother it is who is in charge there has them playing some really decent football
Unfortunately for them FC United are on a real roll & I think may pip them to promotion. If they do though they should be safe in the play offs
I think they play each other on Tuesday night at Gigg Lane & whoever wins that will win the title I thinkBugger! With a 12.15 ko for us I was looking for a non-league game to go to!
The game at that level to have been at yesterday was Nantwich Town v Trafford
Apparently the assistant referee on the main stand side was superb!!! ;-)
Not what I’ve heard. The word “clowns” was used, I believe. ;)

Ha ha!! Well done for digging that one out!!
Unfortunately there was no assessor there to back either of our claims up!!
Trafford’s chairman told me an offside I flagged for late on when the guy was clean through on goal was wrong but I’m never wrong!!I’m the assistant on the right as you look at the photo – great performance & handsome too!!
